  • Fuel shutoff valve of a gas generator controls propellant mass flowrate of a rocket engine, by using pilot pressure and spring force. The developing fuel shutoff valve can be self sustained even though pilot pressure is removed in an actuator. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the characteristics of the forces with respect to the opening and closing of the valve in order to evaluate its performance. In light of this, the valve has been designed to adjust the control pressure for the opening of the poppet and to determine the working fluid pressure at which the valve starts to close. This paper also has been designed dynamic model using the AMESim and predicted flow coefficient of the valve by Fluent CFD analysis. Various results from the prediction and the analysis have been compared with experiments. Finally, dynamic characteristics of the valve have been verified with experimental results.

  • Cyclone is widely apoted in the vacuum cleaner, because of it's simple structure, the dust collection efficiency is high and its transparency feaure which can be shown to the customer. At past times, cyclone performance is represented by collection efficiency, flow rate, pressure drop etc. At recent times the noise problem is getting important as cyclone comes into home-appliances. In this paper, cyclone's pressure drop and noise is measured at the variation of the cyclone structure and the main sources of cyclone peak noise is found by experiments and numerical analysis. In addition, the structure for peak noise reduction is suggested and it is beneficial both pressure drop and noise reduction.

  • Recently, it has been important to develop light, silent and less-vibrational automobile. In this study, in order to investigate the characteristics of the noise caused by the main silencer components-stiffener flange, inlet pipe and exhaust pipe etc., computational flow analysis, vibration and noise experiments were performed about the variable heights of the stiffener flange. Flow structure in the mainsilencer which calculated by CFD solver-IDEAS ESC, and frequency response function results of impact hammer test was proposed and it was found good agreement between former results and the exhaust orifice noise measured.

  • This paper introduces the study of hood-type wind turbine embedded on highway median strip. Recently, many studies are being made to apply to small wind turbine in city. This study is wind turbine producing electricity generated from the wind by running cars. In order to analyze wind generated by running cars, we measured experiments using running cars and buses. Also, using CFD and interpreter program, we analysis wind turbines performance and applied to the twist-sabonius blade. This wind turbine attached to safety lamp on the road is produced to use electricity generated through the wind tunnel experiment. In this paper results, this wind turbine system is expected to produce the power source installed the heat ray and safety lamps on the road.

  • This study is aimed to develop a new type of micro cross-flow hydro turbine which has very simple structure and relatively high efficiency. Micro eco cross-flow hydro turbine (ECFT) is proposed to apply in the ranges of very low and middle specific speeds in order to extend the operational range of the turbine. In order to not only obtain a basic data for a new design method of ECFT but also improve the turbine efficiency, experiments and CFD analysis on the performance and internal flow characteristics of the turbine model are conducted. According to the present study results, anti-recirculation block (ARB) and relatively wide turbine width with high flow rate improve the turbine efficiency.

  • An axial flow fan design system has been made by integrating the self-developed programs and I-DEAS. By using the system, an axial flow fan was designed, manufactured and verified through the wind tunnel experiments in coorperation with a refrigerator appliance division. It has been shown that the optimal design without the ambiguity of the design parameters can be possible by the three-dimensional flow simulations using a self-developed CID code, FANS-3D. (Flow Analysis code using Navier Stokes aguations in Three-Dimensional curvilinear coordinates). By virtue of the fluency of the data flow, an optimally designed fan which satisfies design conditions can be selected in a short time and less cost. The manufacturing processes of a Mock-up and an injection molding die have been automated through the self-made interface programs which connnect from the start to the end. It has been shown that the newly developed fan by this system has a superior performance characteristics to an existing fan.

  • With modem computational fluid dynamics method (CFD), air-charging models of the air brake pipe system and auxiliary reservoir are built. Compared with one-dimension model, no empirical formula is introduced to solve branch pipe fields for two-dimension model. A modified operator-splitting method is presented to solve the coupled equations of pressure and velocity, and numerical simulation shows that it is very stable. Compare the numerical results with empirical data of heavy haul trains in home and abroad so as to prove the correctness of the theory and algorithm presented. This paper gives theoretic reference to the experiments of braking effects of heavy haul trains, and forms a basis for development of complete freight train air brake system simulation.

  • This paper describes the cycloidal wind turbine, which is a straight blade vertical axis wind turbine using the cycloidal blade system. Cycloidal blade system consists of several blades rotating about an axis in parallel direction. Each blade changes its pitch angle periodically. Cycloidal wind turbine is different from the previous turbines. The wind turbine operates with optimum rotating forces through active control of the blade to change pitch angle and phase angle according to the changes of wind direction and wind speed. Various numerical experiments were conducted to develop a small vertical axis wind turbine of 1 kW class. For this numerical analysis, the rotor system equips four blades consisting of a symmetric airfoil NACA0018 of 1.0m in span, 0.22m in chord and 1.0m in radius. A general purpose commercial CFD program, STAR-CD, was used for numerical analysis. PCL of MSC/PATRAN was used for efficient parametric auto mesh generation. Variables of wind speed, pitch angle, phase angle and rotating speed were set in the numerical experiments. The generated power was obtained according to the various combinations of these variables. Optimal pitch angle and phase angle of cycloidal blade system were obtained according to the change of the wind direction and the wind speed. Based on data obtained from the above analysis, control device was designed. The wind direction and the wind speed were sensed by a wind indicator and an anemometer. Each blades were actuated to optimal performance values by servo motors.

  • The primary challenge in improving fuel efficiency and reducing air pollution for commercial vehicles is reducing their aerodynamic drag. Various flow control devices, such as cab-roof fairing, gap fairing, cab extender, and side skirt have been introduced to reduce drag, however, the drag reduction effect and applicability are different depending on each commercial vehicle model. To evaluate the fuel consumption of heavy vehicles, a comprehensive research approach, including drag force measurement, flow field analysis is required. This study investigated the effect of a cab extender, which installed rear region of cab, on a drag coefficient of commercial vehicle through wind tunnel experiments and CFD. The results showed that the cab extender significantly modified the flow structure around the vehicle, leading to 8.2% reduction in drag coefficient compared to the original vehicle model. These results would provide practical application for enhancing the aerodynamic performance and fuel efficiency of heavy vehicle.

  • Generally, classifiers have been used as machines to crush raw materials and classify suitable particle sizes in all industrial fields, such as food, chemical, and mineral. However, the technique for classifying micron-sized particles between 5 and $20{\mu}m$ is inferior. In particular, numerous experiments and considerable experiences are required to predict the particle size, because the classifier particle size is determined according to the internal flow. However, it is quite difficult to set the driving conditions so that the desired particle size can be classified only by experience and experimentation. Therefore, this study proposes a method of predicting the average particle size by employing multiphase flow analysis and the Taguchi method; this method is subsequently verified.
