  • Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) have attracted the attention of scientists and engineers involved in a wide area of research, microscopy, diagnostics and sensing. SPPs are waves that propagate along the surface of a conductor, usually metals. These are essentially light waves that are trapped on the surface because of their interaction with the free electrons of conductor. In this interaction, the free electrons respond collectively by oscillating in resonance with the light wave. The resonant interaction between the surface charge oscillation and the electromagnetic field of the light constitutes the SPPs and gives rise to its unique properties. In this papers, we studied theoretical and experimental extraordinary transmittance (T) and reflectance (R) of 2 dimensional metal hole array (2D-MHA) on GaAs in consideration of the diffraction orders. The 2d-MHAs was fabricated using ultra-violet photolithography, electron-beam evaporation and standard lift-off process with pitches ranging from 1.8 to $3.2{\mu}m$ and diameter of half of pitch, and was deposited 5-nm thick layer of titanium (Ti) as an adhesion layer and 50-nm thick layer of gold (Au) on the semiinsulating GaAs substrate. We employed both the commercial software (CST Microwave Studio: Computer Simulation Technology GmbH, Darmstadt, Germany) based on a finite integration technique (FIT) and a rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA) to calculate transmittance and reflectance. The transmittance was measured at a normal incident, and the reflectance was measured at variable incident angle of range between $30^{\circ}{\sim}80^{\circ}$ with a Nicolet Fourier transmission infrared (FTIR) spectrometer with a KBr beam splitter and a MCT detector. For MHAs of pitch (P), the peaks ${\lambda}$ max in the normal incidence transmittance spectra can be indentified approximately from SP dispersion relation, that is frequency-dependent SP wave vector (ksp). Shown in Fig. 1 is the transmission of P=2.2 um sample at normal incidence. We attribute the observation to be a result of FTIR system may be able to collect the transmitted light with higher diffraction order than 0th order. This is confirmed by calculations: for the MHAs, diffraction efficiency in (0, 0) diffracted orders is lower than in the (${\pm}x$, ${\pm}y$) diffracted orders. To further investigate the result, we calculated the angular dependent transmission of P=2.2 um sample (Fig. 2). The incident angle varies from 30o to 70o with a 10o increment. We also found the splitting character on reflectance measurement. The splitting effect is considered a results of SPPs assisted diffraction process by oblique incidence.

  • The stabilization control of Inverted Pendulum(IP) system is difficult because of its nonlinearity and structural unstability. Futhermore, a series of conventional techniques such as the pole placement and the optimal control based on the local linearizations have narrow stabilizable regions. At the same time, the fine tunings of their gain parameters are also troublesome. Thus, in this paper, an Evolving Neural Network Controller(ENNC) which its structure and its connection weights are optimized simultaneously by Real Variable Elitist Genetic Algorithm(RVEGA) was presented for stabilization of an IP system with nonlinearity. This proposed ENNC was described by a simple genetic chromosome. And the deletion of neuron, the according to the various flag types. Therefore, the connection weights, its structure and the neuron types in the given ENNC can be optimized by the proposed evolution strategy. And the proposed ENNC was implemented successfully on the ADA-2310 data acquisition board and the 80586 microprocessor in order to stabilize the IP system. Through the simulation and experimental results, we showed that the finally acquired optimal ENNC was very useful in the stabilization control of IP system.

  • This paper presents a novel single-stage high frequency resonant inverter link type DC-DC converter using zero voltage switching with high power-factor. The proposed topology is integrated half-bridge boost rectifier as power factor corrector(PFC) and half-bridge high frequency resonant converter into a single-stage. The input stage of the half-bridge boost rectifier works in discontinuous conduction mode(DCM) with constant duty cycle and variable switching frequency. So that a boost converter makes the line current follow naturally the sinusoidal line voltage waveform. Simulation results have demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed high frequency resonant converter. Characteristics values based on characteristics analysis through circuit analysis is given as basis data in design procedure. Also, experimental results are presented to verify theoretical discussion. This proposed inverter will be able to be practically used as a power supply in various fields as induction heating applications, fluorescent lamp and DC-DC converter etc.

  • To help solve the problems of how to set the optimal sawing force and the optimal controller parameters for different sawing conditions, a mathematical model of a proposed sawing system was established according to the principle of sawing force control. The conventional PID control method was then used for further research of the closed-loop control of the sawing force. Finally, through simulation and experimental research, the influence rule of the controller parameters and sawing load on the control performance and the relationships between the sawing width and controller parameters (proportion coefficient) and the sawing force setting value were obtained, from which a system scheme for intelligent sawing control of a band sawing machine was proposed. The research shows that the sawing efficiency of the intelligent sawing system was 18.1 (48%) higher than that of the original sawing system when sawing a grooved section sawing material, which verifies the good control effect of the proposed scheme.

  • This paper presents investigation into the behavior of beam-column joints, with the joint region concrete being replaced by steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) and by ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC). A total of ten beam-column joint specimens (BCJ) were tested experimentally to failure under monotonic and cyclic loading, with the beam section being subjected to flexural loading and the column to combined flexural and axial loading. The joint region essentially transferred shear and axial stresses as received from the column. Steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) and ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) were used as an innovative construction and/or strengthening scheme for some of the BCJ specimens. The reinforced concrete specimens were reinforced with longitudinal steel rebar, 18 mm, and some specimens were reinforced with an additional two ties in the joint region. The results showed that using SFRC and UHPC as a replacement concrete for the BCJ improved the joint shear strength and the load carrying capacity of the hybrid specimens. The mode of failure was also converted from a non-desirable joint shear failure to a preferred beam flexural failure. The effect of the ties in the SFRC and UHPC joint regions could not be observed due to the beam flexural failure. Several models were used in estimating the joint shear strength for different BCJ specimens. The results showed that the existing models yielded wide-ranging values. A new concept to take into account the influence of column axial load on the shear strength of beam-column joints is also presented, which demonstrates that the recommended values for concrete tensile strength for determination of joint shear strength need to be amended for joints subject to moderate to high axial loads. Furthermore, finite element model (FEM) simulation to predict the behaviour of the hybrid BCJ specimens was also carried out in an ABAQUS environment. The result of the FEM modelling showed good agreement with experimental results.

  • This study was conducted to compare the methane ($CH_4$) production estimated by in vivo (sulfur hexafluoride tracer technique ($SF_6$)) with that of two in vitro rumen simulation (RUSITEC) and gas production (IVGPT)) techniques. Four adult dry Holstein cows, aged $7.4{\pm}3.0$ years and weighing $697{\pm}70$ kg, were used for measuring methane production from five diets by the $SF_6$ technique. The experimental diets were alfalfa hay ($D_1$), corn silage + soybean meal (SBM) (910: 90, $D_2$), Italian rye grass hay +SBM (920: 80, $D_3$), rice straw +SBM (910: 90, $D_4$) and Sudan grass hay +SBM (920: 80, $D_5$). Each diet was individually fed to all 4 cows and 5 feeding studies of 17 d each were conducted to measure the methane production. In the RUSITEC, methane production was measured from triplicate vessels for each diet .In vitro gas production was measured for each of the diets in triplicate syringes. The gas produced after 24 and 48 h was recorded and gas samples were collected in vacuum vials and the methane production was calculated after correction for standard temperature and pressure (STP). Compared to the $SF_6$ technique, estimates of methane production using the RUSITEC were lower for all diets. Methane production estimated from 24 h in vitro gas production was higher (p<0.001) on $D_1$ as compared to that measured by $SF_6$, whereas on $D_2$ to $D_5$ it was lower. Compared to $SF_6$, methane production estimated from 48 h in vitro gas production was higher on all diets. However, methane estimated from the mean of the two measurement intervals (24+48 h/2) in IVGPT was very close to that of $SF_6$ (correlation 0.98), except on $D_1$. The results of our study confirmed that IVGPT is reflective of in vivo conditions, so that it could be used to generate a database on methane production potential of various ruminant diets and to examine strategies to modify methane emissions by ruminants.

  • The sensitivity of ozone to $NO_x$ and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emission rates under different ventilation rates and $NO_2-to-NO_x$ emission ratios in a street canyon is investigated using a chemistry box model. The carbon bond mechanism IV (CBM-IV) with 36 gaseous species and 93 chemical reactions is incorporated. $NO_x$ and VOCs emission rates considered range from 0.01 to $0.30ppb\;s^{-1}$ with intervals of $0.01ppb\;s^{-1}$. Three different ventilation rates and three different $NO_2-to-NO_x$ emission ratios are considered. The simulation results show that the ozone concentration decreases with increasing $NO_x$ emission rate but increases with increasing VOCs emission rate. When the emission ratio of VOCs to $NO_x$ is smaller than about 4, the ozone concentration is lower in the street canyon than in the background. On average, the magnitude of the sensitivity of ozone to $NO_x$ emission rate is significantly larger than that to VOCs emission rate. As the $NO_x$ emission rate increases, the magnitude of the sensitivity of ozone to $NO_x$ and VOCs emission rates decreases. Because the ozone concentration is lower in the street canyon than in the background, the increased ventilation rate enhances ozone inflow from the background. Therefore, the increase in ventilation rate results in the increase in ozone concentration and the decrease in the magnitude of the sensitivity of ozone to $NO_x$ and VOCs emission rates when the emission ratio of VOCs to $NO_x$ is smaller than about 4. On the other hand, the increase in $NO_2-to-NO_x$ emission ratio results in the increase in ozone concentration because the chemical ozone production due to the $NO_2$ photolysis is enhanced. In the present experimental setup, the contribution of the change in $NO_2-to-NO_x$ emission ratio to the change in the sensitivity of ozone to $NO_x$ emission rate is larger than that of the change in ventilation rate.

  • A certain system to overcome high temperature should be introduced for the stable year-round cultivation in greenhouses. There are efficient methods to overcome high temperature such as ventilation system with shading screen, fan and pad system with screen, and fog system with screen. This study was carried out to find a means to determine the capacity of such system. Heat balance equations for each system were established and verified by experimental results. The calculated ventilation rates from heat balance equations showed a good agreement with the measured ones. The evapotranspiration coefficient was the most important parameter affecting the ventilation requirement among input parameter affecting the ventilation requirement among input parameters except weather data. When the evaportanspiration coefficient increased 1%, the ventilation requirement decreased 1.3%. Therefore the data of evapotranspiration coefficient should be accumulated by various experiments, and then design standards and selection guidelines should be provided. The simulation results for same design conditions shown that air exchanges requirement and evaporating water of fan and pad system were 5.1∼7.7% and 6.8∼9.3% larger than those of fog system, respectively.

  • TCP(Transmission Control Protocol) is currently used connection-oriented protocol as a typical transport layer protocol in the Internet. However, it has deficiency not be able to communicate with other TCP entities when any link included in the path is down because of single-homing on single path. SCTP(Stream Control Transmission Protocol) suggested as the new transport layer protocol supports multi-homing feature, which provides several paths between source and destination. It can communicate with other SCTP entities using alternate path even when any link on the primary path is down. This paper aims to measure and analyze the multi-homing effect of SCTP over TCP in case of link-down using NS-2 simulator. We classify SCTP into $SCTP_{single-homing}$ and $SCTP_{multi-homing}$ because SCTP with single-homing can also be used like TCP. We measured throughput and bandwidth utilization varying link-down duration, bandwidth, and RTT(round trip time), Simulation results show that throughput of $SCTP_{multi-homing}$ is more than that of TCP by 18 % on average. It is also shown that $SCTP_{multi-homing}$ on varying RTT and bandwidth increases the throughput of TCP by 'l7% and 9% on average, respectively in the link-down environment. In above cases, more or less difference between $SCTP_{single-homing}$ and TCP on throughput and bandwidth utilization was found To summarize, multi-homing effect of SCTP over TCP on throughput is about 18 % on average in the link-down environment This experimental result can be used as the benchmark in order to estimate the multi-homing effect of SCTP over TCP when the link-down happens in the real Internet.

  • An automotive ball joint connects the suspension system to the steering system and helps to enable rotational and linear motion between the two elements for steering. This study examines a ball joint used in medium and large-sized pickup trucks. Ball joints consist of a stud, socket, bearing, and plug. The main structural performance metrics of ball joints are the pull-out strength and push-out strength. These structural parameters must meet certain criteria to avoid serious accidents. Test and simulation methods are used to investigate the design requirements, but tests are time-consuming and costly. In this study, we modeled ball joints in SolidWorks and performed a finite element analysis in Abaqus to predict structural performance. The analysis was used to obtain the structural performance required for the static analysis of a 2D axisymmetric model. The uncertainties in the manufacturing of the ball joint were assumed to be the manufacturing tolerances, and the dimensional design variables were identified through case studies. The manufacturing tolerances at each level were defined, and the results were compared with experimental results.
