  • In this work, the hydration process and cytotoxicity of lab-synthesized experimental Portland cements (EPCs) were investigated for dental applications. For this purpose, EPCs were prepared using laboratory-synthesized clinker constituents, tricalcium silicate (C3S), dicalcium silicate (C2S), and tricalcium aluminate (C3A). C-A was prepared by the Pechini method, whereas C3S and C2S were synthesized by solid-state reactions. The phase compositions were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and the hydration process of the individual constituents and their combinations, with and without the addition of gypsum, was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Furthermore, four EPC compositions were prepared using the lab-synthesized C-A, C3S, and C2S, and their hydration processes were examined by EIS, and their cytotoxicity to HPC and HIPC cells were tested by performing an XTT assay. None of the EPCs exhibited any significant cytotoxicity for 7 days, and no significant difference was observed in the cell viabilities of ProRoot MTA and EPCs. The results indicated that all the EPCs are sufficiently biocompatible with human dental pulp cells and can be potential substitutes for commercial dental cements.

  • In road pavements, it is known that cement concrete pavement has superior durability. But in repairing pavement, cement concrete pavement is not usually applied because of the length of time while the road is interrupted when using Ordinary and Rapid-hardening Portland Cement. And Super High Early Strength Cement and Ultra Super High Early Strength Cement are not favorable for ready mixed concrete because of rapid setting time, high slump loss and other restrictions. We developed special cement developing 1 day strength of over 30.0N/$mm^2$ to open the road within 1 day and workable time is maintained over 1 hour so that it can be used as ready mixed concrete. We performed experimental overlay construction with concrete and evaluated the properties of the fresh and hardened concrete. The flexural strength was over 5.0N/$mm^2$ and the compressive strength was over 30N/$mm^2$ at 1 day. So it is thought that the road can be open to traffic within 1 day after placement.

  • Ground granulated blast-furnace slag shows very high strength when proper alkali-activator exists. This paper deals with setting time, heat evolution rate and the strength development of alkali-activated slag cement activated by KOH, Ca(OH$)_{2}$, $Na_{2}$ $So_{4}$ , and alum(potassium aluminum sulfate). Alkali-activated slag mortar is studied by comparison with GGBF slag cement mortar. The experimental results indicate that for moisture curing at $25^{\circ}C$, the addiction of either 4% $Na_{2}$ $So_{4}$ or 4% alum increases the strength of GGBF slag cement mortar consisting of 50% GGBF slag and 50% portland cement at early age. Strength of activated GGBF slag cement mortars at 1, 3 and 7 days exceeded that of GGBF slag cement mortar. A conduction calorimeter was used to monitor early age hydration.

  • Silica fume is a by-product of induction arc furnaces and has long been used as a mineral admixture to produce high-strength, high-performance concrete. Due to the pozzolanic reaction between calcium hydroxide and silica fume, compared with that of Portland cement, the hydration of concrete containing silica fume is much more complex. In this paper, by considering the production of calcium hydroxide in cement hydration and its consumption in the pozzolanic reaction, a numerical model is proposed to simulate the hydration of concrete containing silica fume. The heat evolution rate of silica fume concrete is determined from the contribution of cement hydration and the pozzolanic reaction. Furthermore, the temperature distribution and temperature history in hardening blended concrete are evaluated based on the degree of hydration of the cement and the mineral admixtures. The proposed model is verified through experimental data on concrete with different water-to-cement ratios and mineral admixture substitution ratios.

  • This research presents the effect of various ground pozzolanic materials in blended cement concrete on the strength and chloride penetration resistance. An experimental investigation dealing with concrete incorporating ground fly ash (GFA), ground bottom ash (GBA) and ground rice husk ash (GRHA). The concretes were mixed by replacing each pozzolan to Ordinary Portland cement at levels of 0%, 10%, 20% and 40% by weight of binder. Three different water to cement ratios (0.35, 0.48 and 0.62) were used and type F superplasticizer was added to keep the required slump. Compressive strength and chloride permeability were determined at the ages of 28, 60, and 90 days. Furthermore, using this experimental database, linear and nonlinear multiple regression techniques were developed to construct a mathematical model of chloride permeability in concretes. Experimental results indicated that the incorporation of GFA, GBA and GRHA as a partial cement replacement significantly improved compressive strength and chloride penetration resistance. The chloride penetration of blended concrete continuously decreases with an increase in pozzolan content up to 40% of cement replacement and yields the highest reduction in the chloride permeability. Compressive strength of concretes incorporating with these pozzolans was obviously higher than those of the control concretes at all ages. In addition, the nonlinear technique gives a higher degree of accuracy than the linear regression based on statistical parameters and provides fairly reasonable absolute fraction of variance ($R^2$) of 0.974 and 0.960 for the charge passed and chloride penetration depth, respectively.

  • The vertical roller mill, which performs the grinding and partly blending of raw material, is the one of the important machine to produce ordinary portland cement. It has been reported that an unexpected fatigue failure occurred in a table liner in the course of grinding portland cement. The life of table liner is estimated to $4{\times}10^7$ cycles in the design stage, but at the field, when its operating time reaches to $2{\times}10^6{\sim}8{\times}10^6$ cycles, the fracture of table liner begins to be found. The fracture of table liner is initiated from the outside edge of grinding path contacting with the grinding roller. Its maintenance normally take 30 % of the total maintenance costs of the roller mill. Therefore, this study shows the clarification of the reasons occurring the fatal destruction of the table liner by fatigue fracture analysis utilizing fracture mechanics and by the finite element method. And, the results from Goodman diagram illustrate relationship of including information on the transition between tensile and bending fatigue strength in the fatigue characterization of table liner.

  • This paper presents the experimental results on the penetration of chloride. ions to ordinary portland cement concrete which is subjected to 2 different artificial environments; consecutive digestion, wetting at $3\%$ NaCl for 1 day and then drying at $40^{\circ}C$ oven for 4 days. The water-cement ratio was $35\%,\;45\%,\;55\%$. Test results showed that the intrusion depth and concentration of chloride ions penetrated into concrete in repeated wetting-drying environments were respectively deeper and higher than those of consecutive digestion environment. The penetration of chloride ions deeply depend on the effect of water to cement ratio.

  • Geopolymer concrete is finding a growing number of niche applications in the field of civil engineering due to its high compressive strength and strength gain rate, retainage of structural properties in elevated temperature environments, chemical stability in highly acidic conditions and environmental benefits. Combining the above mentioned characteristics with induced electrical conductivity, could enable geopolymer cement to serve as a smart and sustainable cementitious material suitable for health monitoring of civil structures. Carbon fibers were added to fresh geopolymer and OPC (ordinary Portland cement) mixes to enhance their electrical conductivities. AC-impedance spectroscopy analysis was performed on the specimens with fiber fraction ranging from 0.008 to 0.8 with respect to the weight of cementitious binder, to measure their electrical resistivity values and to determine the maximum beneficial fiber content required to attain electrical percolation. Experimental observations suggest that CFR-geopolymer cement exhibits superior performance to CFR-OPC in terms of conducting electrical current.
