In this study, we try to suggest measures to reduce leakage at a joint between CPVC piping for a sprinkler system and a pipe expansion through reviews of domestic and foreign standards and related tests. The quality of the waterproof rubber packing material between a valve socket and pipe expansion nut was examined. In the leak test, the valve socket material over the expansion part of the metal pipe nut was found to use a metal part or a schlorinated polyvinyl chloride pipe nut part. In addition, the KS B 0221 standard for parallel pipe threads with threaded and thread inspection criteria and inspection standards in order to ensure an acceptable quality of valve socket, there is a need to amend the regulations to comply with the KS B 5223 (screw thread limit gauges parallel pipe threads). We do not have detailed standards for expansion piping nuts for waterproof rubber ring material, so we need to amend the relevant criteria for EPDM material to be used with excellent waterproofing, for which both NBR and EPDM are currently used.

To obtain an exact flow loss in piping systems is very important in the face of efficiency anticipation and work control of plant. The object of this study is to get the flow loss through the experiment for sudden expansion and contraction part of circular pipe nozzle. The experiment in this study is performed after getting the flow loss factor for sudden expansion and contraction through preliminary experiments. It is confirmed that the results of this study agreed with the approximated equation of Ikeda and Matsuo. It is proved that flow loss factor ${\zeta}_3$for sudden expansion and contraction part of circular pipe is dependent on $L/D_1$in these experimental conditions.
Many studies of heat transfer on the swirling flow or unswirled flow in a abrupt pipe expansion are widely carried out. The mechanism is not fully found evidently due to the instabilities of flow in a sudden change of the shape and appearance of turbulent shear layers in a recirculation region and secondary vortex near the corner. The purpose of this study is to obtain data through an experimental study of the swirling flow and heat transfer downstream of an abrupt expansion in a circular pipe with uniform heat flux. Experiments were carried out for the turbulent flow nd heat transfer downstream of an abrupt circular pipe expansion. The uniform heat flux condition was imposed to the downstream of the abrupt expansion by using an electrically heated pipe. Experimental data are presented for local heat transfer rates and local axial velocities in the tube downstream of an abrupt 3:1 & 2:1 expansion. Air was used as the working fluid in the upstream tube, the Reynolds number was varied from 60, 00 to 120, 000 and the swirl number range (based on the swirl chamber geometry, i.e. L/d ratio) in which the experiments were conducted were L/d=0, 8 and 16. Axial velocity increased rapidly at r/R=0.35 in the abrupt concentric expansion turbulent flow through the test tube in unswirled flow. It showed that with increasing axial distance the highest axial velocities move toward the tube wall in the case of the swirling flow abrupt expansion. A uniform wall heat flux boundary condition was employed, which resulted in wall-to-bulk temperatures ranging from 24.deg. C to 71.deg. C. In swirling flow, the wall temperature showed a greater increase at L/d=16 than any other L/d. The bulk temperature showed a minimum value at the pipe inlet, it also exhibited a linear increase with axial distance along the pipe. As swirl intensity increased, the location of peak Nu numbers was observed to shift from 4 to 1 step heights downstream of the expansion. This upstream movement of the maximum Nusselt number was accompanied by an increase in its magnitude from 2.2 to 8.8 times larger than fully developed tube flow values.

In this paper, the flow characteristics of water in the water supply pipes of a WBC array were evaluated. We simulated the flow velocities and pressures for a standard pipe, an expansion pipe with a concentric reducer, and an expansion pipe with an eccentric reducer using computational fluid dynamics. In the case of the standard pipe, when the inlet flow velocities were 0.5 m/s and 2.0 m/s, the maximum flow velocities at the center of the WBC array were 0.54 m/s and 2.74 m/s, respectively, which were the greatest values among those of all the pipe models considered. In the case of the expansion pipe, the maximum flow velocities at the center of the WBC array were almost the same under the same conditions regardless of the type of reducer. The pressure losses in the pipe due to the concentric and eccentric reducers were found to be (165.09 ${\times}$ inlet $velocity^{1.6677}$) and (210.98 ${\times}$ inlet $velocity^{1.6478}$), respectively. The coefficient of determination at this time was greater than 0.99 and was the same for both the models. As a simulation result, it was found that in order to reduce the pressure loss when pipe with WBC array is connected with a conventional pipe, diameter of the pipe with WBC array at that section should be enlarged by one step, and then connected to the conventional pipe with a concentric reducer.

Expandable steel pipe piles are installed by inserting expansion equipment to increase the cross-sectional area of steel pipes, which can improve the pile performance compared to micro-piles. In this paper, a hydraulic expansion device was developed to expand steel pipe piles in practice. A series of laboratory and field tests were conducted to verify the performance of the developed expansion device to expand steel pipes. The expansion capability and expandable range was evaluated by measuring the strain and expansion time at the maximum pressure of the hydraulic expansion device. The thinner steel pipe, the larger strain but longer expansion time required in the test. For example, the 4.0-mm-thick steel pipe showed strain reduction by 30% and a decrease in the required expansion time by 40% compared to the 2.9-mm-thick steel pipe. In addition, in-situ expansion tests were performed to verify the expandability of steel pipes under the ground, and the exhumed specimen showed clear expanded sections. The structural integrity was determined by comparing the material performance the original and expanded specimens.
This paper discusses prediction of the sound pressure level produced by simple engine exhaust systems(plain pipe, plain expansion chamber pipe, plain expansion chamber with internally extended inlet and outlet pipe, perforated pipe enclosed in a plain expansion chamber) and a computer program has been developed which predicts the sound pressure level and the frequency spectrum. The program utilizes unsteady flow gas dynamic theory and acoustic theory to predict the pressure-time history in the exhaust system and the mass flow rate-time history at the open end of the system and the sound pressure levels(1/3 Octave band levels) and the frequency spectrum in semi-anechoic room. The predictions are compared with measured levels and show a high degree of correlation.

Recently, small-scale excavation like ground cavity restoration and buried pipe replacement works are being carried out in urban area, in order to improve living convenience. This paper describes experiment results on the ground reinforcement method that can reduce the buried pipe damage, when the differential settlement occurred due to poor compaction of ground below the buried pipe. Plate load tests were conducted to evaluate a reinforcement effect of ground using concrete mat and expansion mat in the ground below the buried pipe. The results showed that the stress reduction ratio by concrete mat and expansion mat according to the surcharge load was about 46%~48% and 39%~42%, respectively. Therefore, the differential settlement of the buried pipe and the ground deformation below the buried pipes were reduced by the reinforcement effect of the concrete mat and expansion mat. This means that it is possible to prevent a buried pipe damage due to underground cavity and ground subsidence, if concrete mat and expansion mat are reinforced in the ground below the buried pipe or on the ground between the buried pipes.

The temperature of exhaust gas was raised by increasing of engine movement on developing engine. Thermal of high temperature and pressure reverse in bellows, because of increasing of engine movement and the thermal performance of converter in combustion. As a result, thermal loss is increased and thermal efficiency is decreased rapidly in bellows, it can occur to damage in mechanical structure. In this study, it was necessary to analyze back pressure performance and thermal characteristic on driving condition in exhaust system. It was adapted braid type bellows and straight type exhaust pipe. It was compared with curve type exhaust pipe for lay-out on considering to design of exhaust system. It was necessary to improve thermal characteristic and back pressure performance so that expansion cavity pipe(ECP) was installed between bellows and catalyst convert. Not only decreasing back pressure was solved but also thermal characteristic problems in exhaust pipe because of increasing capacity. According to this study, the basis of data is presented when new exhaust system is designed.

The expansion behavior of inflatable steel pipe rockbolt shows geometric nonlinearity due to its ${\Omega}-shaped$ section. Previous studies on the anchoring behavior of inflatable steel pipe rockbolt were mainly performed using theoretical method. However, those studies oversimplified the actual behavior by assuming isotropic expansion of inflatable steel pipe rockbolt. In this study, the anchoring behavior of the inflatable steel pipe rockbolt were investigated by the numerical method considering the irregularity of pipe expansion and other influencing factors. The expansion of inflatable steel pipe rockbolt, the contact stress distribution and the change of the average contact stress and the contact area during installation were analyzed. The contact stresses were developed differently depending on the constitutive behavior of rocks. Small contact stresses occurred in steel pipes installed in elasto-plastic rock compared to steel pipes installed in elastic rock. Also, the anchoring behaviors of the inflatable steel pipe rockbolt were different according to the stiffness of the rock. The steel pipe was completely unfolded in the case of the stiffness smaller than 0.5 GPa, but it was not fully unfolded in the case of the stiffness larger than 0.5 GPa for the given analysis condition. When the steel pipe is completely unfolded, the contact stress increases as the rock stiffness increases. However, the contact stress decreases as the rock stiffness increases when the steel pipe is not fully expanded.
This study was focused on the measurement of thermal expansion coefficients for GRP pipe through strain gage circuits. First of all, thermal expansion coefficients of aluminum beam were measured to examine the validity of the suggested method by using various types of strain gage circuits. Thermal expansion coefficients of GRP pipes along axial and hoop directions were measured to investigate the effect of the location of strain gages, number of repeated measurements, and strain gage types with different thermal expansion coefficients on the thermal strains and the repeatability of measured results. According to the results, thermal expansion coefficients of GRP pipes along hoop direction were lower than those along axial direction due to the constraint effect of reinforced glass fibers on thermal strains along hoop direction. As measurements were repeated, thermal expansion coefficients of GRP pipes were slightly increased, but the degree of increase became smaller. Finally, the same thermal expansion coefficients were obtained irrespective of different types of strain gages with different thermal expansion coefficients if thermal strains of strain gages were compensated by using reference compensation specimen.
