  • The change of thermal expansion and mechanical behaviors by cold working has been investigated in Fe-29%Ni-17%Co low thermal expansion Kovar alloy. Fe-29%Ni-17%Co alloy was cold rolled gradually and prepared to plates having reduction ratio of 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80%. Annealing effect on the properties was also studied. Thermal expansion was measured from $25^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$ with a heating rate of $5^{\circ}C$/min by using vacuum differential dilatometer. It was found that thermal expansion coefficient ($\alpha_{30{\sim}400}$) slightly decreased (reduction ration of 20%) and then remarkably increased (above reduction ration of 40%) with increasing reduction ratio of cold rolling. Thermal expansion coefficient ($\alpha_{30{\sim}400}$) was sharply decreased after annealing heat-treatment. Yield and tensile strengths were continuously increased and elongation was decreased by cold roiling. Microstructural observation and X-ray diffraction analysis results showed that the $\alpha$ phase significantly increased as the reduction ratio increased. The slight decrease of thermal expansion coefficient bellow reduction ration of 20% could be explained by the destroying short-range ordering and the decreasing of grain size. The significant increase of thermal expansion coefficient with cold rolling mainly attributed to the appearance of $\alpha$ phase. The correlation between the microstructural cause and invar phenomena for the low thermal expansion behavior was also discussed.

  • Using waste glass in concrete can cause crack and strength loss by the expansion of alkali-silica reaction(ASR). In this study, ASR expansion and properties of strength were analyzed in terms of brown waste glass content, and fibers(steel fiber, polypropylene fiber) and fiber content for reduction ASR expansion due to waste glass. In this accelerated ASTM C 1260 test of waste glass, pessimum content can not be found. Also, when used the fibers with waste g1ass, there is an effect on reduction of expansion and strength loss due to ASR between the alkali in the cement paste and the silica in the waste glass. Specially, adding 1.5 vol.% of steel fiber to 20% of waste glass the expansion ratio was reduced by 40% and flexural strength was developed by up to 110% comparing with only Waste glass ( $80^{\circ}C$ $H_{2}$ O curing).

  • The purpose of this study was to provide quantitative data describing the effect of rapid palatal expansion (RPE) on nasal airway resistance (NAR). RPE is an orthopedic procedure which is commonly used to widen the maxilla in skeletal Class III patients. 18 subjects (9 males and 9 females, mean age: 10 years 7 months) were selected from the Orthodontics in Yongdong Severance Hospital. Recordings of NAR were taken by active anterior method prior to expansion, immediately after desired maximum expansion, and after approximately 3 months and 6 months, and 1 year. All data was recorded and statistically processed with the SPSS program of IBM PC system. The results are as followings . 1. The average initial NAR of the subjects was 3.84 cm $H_2O/LPS\;(SD{\pm}1.34)$. It was greater than the average NAR of the normal subjects. 2. Among 18 subjects, 9 subjects showed reduction of NAR and 9 subjects showed no specific change of NAR after expansion. 3 An average reduction in NAR after immediately expansion was statistically significant at the 0.05 level. 4. The reduction appeared stable throughout the post treatment observation period of 1 year after expansion. From these results, it was suggested that RPE is a useful method to reduce NAR.

  • Two noise reduction systems are proposed in order to overcome the geometric restriction of the reactive muffler such as an expansion chamber. First, membrane is installed as a part of a duct wall and an air cavity is covered outside membrane. Second, membrane is installed inside a duct, which gives no volume change of the duct. Structural-acoustic coupling between membrane and fluid inside the cavity and duct causes rapid impedance mismatching and thereby reflected wave. Theoretical prediction is conducted by using modal expansion approach. The results are compared with the experimental results, which show better noise reduction performance than an expansion chamber.

  • Distortions are analyzed and compared for two TDM channel expansion methods- periodic sample skipping and sampling frequency reduction. Signal is assumed to be stationary random signal with zero.mean. Channel noise and interference are not considered in the analysis. For speech signal, it is shown that the periodic sample skipping method could be a better choice under practical design constraints.

  • A technique for fast image reduction or expansion, in which the reduction(expansion) factor is either any integer or any rational number M/L Is represented. The multiresolution is modeled as an interpolation and filtering followed by a decimation. The model enables frequency domain analysts of the muitiresolution representations as well as convenient design of the Kernels(filters). Using any rin linear phase(Type I) filters a fine to coarse multiresolution structure can be generated.

  • The contraction and expansion noise of a refrigerator are investigated, and some effective methods are proposed to reduce the level and occurrence frequency of noise. First, the noise of a refrigerator is measured to estimate the frequency spectrum and occurrence frequency of noise. Second, a sound visualization was conducted using an acoustic camera to determine the location of the noise source. From the results, it was observed that the internal part mainly producing noise was the third shelf in the freezer room. A method to estimate the acceleration on the location of the noise source is introduced to analyze the contraction and expansion noise precisely and accommodate experimental convenience. Noise reduction methods such as the replacement of the existing shelf with glass shelves, adoption of rail slides, and increase of roughness on the contact surface of the shelf are proposed and tested.

  • Using waste glass in concrete can cause crack and strength loss by the expansion of alkali-silica reaction(ASR). In this study, ASR expansion and properties of strength were analyzed in terms of clear waste glass grading, and by-products(fly ash, blast-furnace slag) and by-products content for reduction ASR expansion due to waste glass. In this accelerated ASTM C 1260 test of waste glass, pessimum grading can be found. • Most decision makers in the electricity industry plan their electric power expansion program by considering only a least cost operation, even when circumstances change with differing complexities. It is necessary, however, to analyze a long-term power expansion plan from various points of view, such as environmental friendliness, benefit of a carbon reduction, and system reliability, as well as least cost operation. The objective and approach of this study is to analyze the proper role of nuclear power in a long-term expansion plan by comparing different scenarios in terms of the system cost changes, $CO_2$ emission reduction, and system reliability in relation to the Business-As-Usual (BAU). The conclusion of this paper makes it clear that the Korean government cannot but expand the nationwide nuclear power program, because an increased energy demand is inevitable and other energy resources will not provide an adequate solution from an economic and sustainability point of view. The results of this analysis will help the Korean government in its long-term resource planning of what kinds of role each electric resource can play in terms of a triangular dilemma involving economics, environmental friendliness, and a stable supply of electricity.
