  • For the production of new exo-biopolymers from microorganisms, an exe-biopolymer producing bacterial strain was isolated from the composter used in composting of organic wastes. Bacteriological properties of this strain and physicochemical properties of producing exo-biopolymer were investigated. The isolated strain was identified as Enterobacter sp. through its morphological, cultural and physiological characteristics. The results of color reactions, CPC (cetyl pyridinium chloride) precipitation and infra red absorption spectral analysis indicated that this exo-biopolymer was presumed as an acidic polysaccharide with uronic acid. This polysaccharide was identified as hetero-polysaccharide consisting of galactose, mannose and galacturonic acid by gas chromatography, and the molecular weight of exopolysaccharide purified by gel chromatography were about 370,000 daltons. The polysaccharide solutions(0.50-2.0%, w/v) exhibited non-Newtonian flow behavior with pseudoplastic property and showed the ability of gel formation at above 1.5% (w/v) of polysaccharide concentration.

  • The hypolipidemic effect of the exe-biopolymer (EXBP) and endo-biopolymer (ENBP) produced from a submerged mycelial culture of Ganoderma lucidum was investigated in dietary-induced hyperlipidemic rats. Hypolipidemic effects were achieved in both the EXBP- and ENBP-treated groups, however, the former proved to be more potent than the latter. The administration of the EXBP (100 mg/kg body weight) substantially reduced the plasma total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, triglyceride, phospholipid levels, and atherogenic index by 31.0, 39.0, 35.4, 28.1, and 53.5%, respectively, when compared to the control group. The EXBP also lowered the liver total cholesterol, triglyceride, and phospholipid levels by 22.4, 23.1, and 12.9%, respectively. Furthermore, the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and ratio of HDL cholesterol to total cholesterol were significantly increased by as much as 24.2% and 47.6%, respectively.

  • The anti-tumor effects of exo- (EX) and endo-biopolymers (EN) produced from submerged mycelial cultures of Ganoderma applanatum (GA), Collybia confluens (CC), and Pleurotus eryngii (PE) were studied using Sarcoma 180 bearing mice. Solid tumor growth was inhibited most effectively when 40 mg/kg body weight (BW) of GA-EX or PE-EN was administered to the intraperitoneal (i.p.) cavity of BALB/c mice. The spleen and liver indexes were increased in mice following i.p. administration of GA-EX and PE-EN fractions. GA-EX and PE-EN reduced the tumor formation by 30.7% and 29.4%, respectively. GA-EX and PE-EN increased the natural killer (NK) cell activity of splenocytes by 41.3% and 28.9%, respectively.

  • Hypoglycemic effects of exo-biopolymers (EBP) produced by submerged mycelial cultures of Coriolus versicolor, Cordyceps sinensis, Paecilomyces japonica, Armillariella mellea, and Fomes fomentarius were investigated in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. The rats from each experimental group were orally administered with EBPs (100 mg/kg BW) daily for 2 weeks. Though the hypoglycemic effect was achieved in all the cases, however, C. versicolor EBP proved as the most potent one. The administration of the C. versicolor EBP substantially reduced (29.9%) the plasma glucose level as compared to the saline administered group (control). It also reduced the plasma total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and, alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels by 9.22, 23.83, 16.93, and 27.31%, respectively. The sugar and amino acid compositions of this EBP were also analyzed in detail.

  • A white rot fungus as a microbial source producing bioflocculant was isolated from rotted leaves and identified as Pestalotiopsis sp. M01. The flocculating activity and productivity of Pestan produced by Pestalotiopsis sp. KCTC 8637P was determined by using Czapek-Dox medium as the inorganic salt source. The flocculating activity was highest at 3% sucrose and 0.3% $KN0_3$, pH 7, and $25^{\circ}C$, respectively. Whilst, the strain growth was highest at 3% sucrose, 0.3% TEX><$KN0_3$, pH 5, and $25^{\circ}C$, respectively.
