Toluene adsorption characteristics in the adsorption bed packed with activated carbon fiber (ACF) were studied. Experimental apparatus is composed of VOC generation equipment, adsorption bed, and analytical instrument. Breakthrough characteristics were investigated with length of the adsorption bed which consisted of 3 or 5 sheets of the ACF and flow rate when toluene concentration are 400 ppm and 800 ppm respectively. When mass transfer zone (MTZ) comes out of the adsorption bed, toluene concentration is increased sharply and reached plateau region by saturation. Experimental results are compared with semi-empirical gas adsorption model proposed by Yoon and Nelson. In order to investigate the movement of the MTZ with adsorption time in the adsorption bed packed with ACFs, weight increment of each ACF was measured with the location of ACF at each run. When the weight increment of ACF by toluene adsorption which located at the exit of the bed reaches about 20%, toluene started to be detected.

The heat transfer characteristics of an internal heat exchanger for $CO_2$ refrigeration cycle are numerically investigated. The numerical model is verified using the published experimental results for the concentric tube type internal heat exchanger. The Hardy-Cross Method gives very good agreement between the calculation and experimental results on the heat transfer rates and exit temperatures. Also, appropriate combination of heat transfer correlations is found. The operating parameters of the heat exchanger are calculated at transcritical region of $CO_2.$ The heat transfer rate of the counter flow type heat exchanger shows the $32\%$ greater than that of the parallel flow type heat exchanger. The increase of heat exchanger length enhances the heat transfer rate. The thermodynamic characteristics and heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ in the internal heat exchanger are estimated.

This experiment was a study of a Vortex nozzle designed to produce micro-bubbles due To investigate air self-suction and the generation of micro-bubble by the Vortex nozzle, the dimensions of air intake region, the nozzle shape, and the nozzle exit diameter ($d_n=5,7,9.2,12.3mm$)werevaried. The air self-suction rate was ~1,000 to 2,000 cc/min at the orifice nozzle (7 mm), and ~100 and ~22 cc/min at the sector nozzles (9.2 and 12.3 mm, respectively). The most bubbles were detected in the orifice nozzle, but bubbles less than $50{\mu}m$ were found in the 12.3-mm sector nozzle. The dissolved oxygen in the tank water was much greater in Case 2 than in Case 1, at both the orifice and sector nozzles. Moreover, the reduction rate of dissolved oxygen was found to be less at the sector nozzles, than at the orifice nozzle.
A finite element method is employed fer a flow analysis of the melt spinning process of a non-circular fiber, a PET(polyethylene terephthalate) filament. The flow field is divided into two regions of die channel and spin-line. A two dimensional analysis is used for the flow within the die channel and a three dimensional analysis fur the flow along the spin-line. The Newtonian fluid is assumed for the PET melt and material properties are considered to be constant except for the viscosity. Effects of gravitation, air drag force, and surface tension are neglected. Although the spin-line length is 4.5 m only five millimeters from the spinneret are evaluated as the domain of the analysis. Isothermal and non-isothermal cases are studied fer the flow within the die channel. The relationship between the mass flow rate and the pressure gradient is presented for the two cases. Three dimensional flow along the spin-line is obtained by assuming isothermal conditions. It is shown that changes in velocity and cross-sectional shape occur mostly in the region of 1mm from the die exit.
In present study, the influence of changing combustor pressure on flame stabilization and nitrogen oxide (NOX) emission in the swirl flame with secondary fuel injection was investigated. The combustor pressure was controlled by suction at combustor exit. Pressure index ($P^*=Pabs/Patm$), where Pabs and Patm indicated the absolute pressure and atmosphere pressure, was controlled in the range of 0.7~1.15 for each equivalence ratio conditions. It could be observed that flame stable region became narrower with decreasing equivalence ratio and pressure index. In this combustion system, stable flames were formed until $P^*=\;0.7$. Emission index decreased with decreasing pressure index for overall equivalence ratio conditions and NOx reduction rates were almost identical for $P^*<1$ regardless of equivalence ratio though EINOx values showed different level with change of equivalence ratio for $P^*{\geq}1$. It is also observed that EINOx decreased with increasing secondary fuel injection ratio. Emission index of nitric oxide was controllable by adjusting the changing combustor pressure and injecting secondary fuel and this NOx reduction technology is applicable to industrial furnaces and air conditioning system.

The experimental study on flow and heat transfer characteristics was conducted to investigate and to compare the performance of swirl jet by a twisted tape as a swirl generator with the performance of impinging single circular jet in fully developed flow tube. The effects of jet Reynolds number(Re=8700, 13800, 20000, 26500), dimensionless distance of nozzle-to-plate(H/d=2, 4, 6, 8) and swirl ratio(S=0.11, 0.23, 0.30) of the jet on the local and average Nusselt number have been examined. Measurements of local heat transfer rate and flow patterns on the jet impinging plate were used naphthalene sublimation technique and flow visualization technique respectively. Mean velocity and turbulence intensity of the jet along the centerline were measured. With a twisted tape in the nozzle exit, average Nusselt number at the around area of stagnation point were higher than those without the twisted tape at H/d=2, 4 and with the increase of Reynolds number. With a twisted tape in the nozzle, in the case of H/d=2, Re=26500 and S=0.11, maximum local Nusselt number at the region of y/d=0 and x/d=0.44 was obtained.

Two-phase flow heat transfer phenomena with flash evaporation inside a vertical tube were studied experimentally. Void fractions were measured using electrical probes, and the flow patterns were identified from the output voltage signal itself. The flow pattern as well as the beat transfer rates were changing along the axial distance from the tube inlet with the system pressure. As the pressure inside the tube decreases with fixed inlet temperature, the overall heat transfer coefficient through the tube wall and the boiling heat transfer coefficient inside the tube increase whereas the condensation heat transfer coefficient outside the tube decreases. The boiling heat transfer coefficient inside the tube measured by the experiments appeared to be somewhat larger than the value obtained from the Chen's correlation. Also, the flow patterns identified from present experiments are at the larger quality region of the low pattern map based on the transition criteria of Mishima and Ishii. This may be due to the non-equilibrium flashing phenomenon occurred at the nozzle exit and the tube inlet ; this also implies that the flow pattern of the two-phase flow depends strongly on the inlet conditions.
The performance prediction of an airfoil fan using a commerical code, STAR/CD, is verified by comparing the calculated results with measured performance data and velocity fields of an airfoil fan. The effects of inlet tip clearance on performance are investigated. The calculations overestimate the pressure rise performance by about 10-25 percent. However, the performance reduction due to tip clearance is well predicted by numerical simulations. Main source of performance decrease is not only the slip factor but also impeller efficiency. The reduction in performance is 12-16 percent for 1 percent gap of the diameter. The calculated reductions in impeller efficiency and slip factor are also linearly proportional to the gap size. The span-wise distributions of phase averaged velocity and pressure at the impeller exit are strongly influenced by the radial gap size. The radial component of velocity and the flow angle increase over the passsage as the gap increases. The slip factor decreases and the loss increases with the gap size. The high velocity of leakage jet affects the impeller inlet and passage flows. With a larger clearance, the main stream moves to the impeller hub side and high loss region extends from the shroud to the hub.

An experimental investigation was conducted to explore the effects of air mass flux on the combustion efficiency and particle size distributions in a solid fuel ramjet using a fuel grain highly loaded with boron carbide. Particle distributions were measured at the grain exit and at the nozz1e entrance using a Malvern 2600 HSD. Combustion efficiency increased with decreasing air mass flux. In general, the particle distribution was trimodal or quadrimodal with node peaks at approximately 4, 15, and 25$\mu\textrm{m}$ and possibly one at less than 2$\mu\textrm{m}$. The larger particles were the result of surface agglomeration, primarily within the recirculation region. Higher inlet air temperature produced higher combustion efficiencies, apparently the result of enhanced combustion of the larger boron carbide particles that burn in a diffusion controlled regime.

The present study aims to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of a pulsating axisymmetric air jet impinging on a heated wall. An axisymmetric contraction nozzle is used to obtain uniform profiles for the mean velocity and turbulence intensity at the nozzle exit. Measurements of the time averaged temperature on the impingement surface are conducted using a Thermochrornatic Liquid Crystal(TLC) technique for steady and pulsating jets at the jet Reynolds numbers of 20000, 30000 and 40000. Considered are pulsation frequencies of 10 and 20 Hz, corresponding to Strouhal numbers below 0.06 based on nozzle width and jet discharge velocity. In addition, the effect of nozzle-to-plate distances in the range of 2 to 10 on heat transfer characteristics is assessed. The pulsating impinging jet provides more uniform heat transfer coefficient near the impingement region, irrespective of H/D. Based on the measured data, a good correlation as a function of the jet Reynolds and Nusselt numbers is reported. It is also found that an exponent m in the relation of Nu ${\propto}\;Re^m$ depends on both r/D and H/D, by which the impinging jet flows are highly affected.
