Current code procedures for stress and stability analysis of new and existing concrete-gravity dams are primarily based on conventional methods of analysis. Such methods can be applied in a straightforward manner but there has been evidence that they may be inaccurate or, possibly, not conservative. This paper presents finite element modeling and analysis procedures and makes recommendations for local failure criteria at the dam-rock interface aimed at predicting more accurately the behavior of dams under hydraulic and anchoring loads.
The behavior variation of concrete dam is investigated, based on a new method for analyzing the data model of concrete dam in service process for the limitation of wavelet transform for solving concrete dam service process model. The study takes into account the time and position of behavior change during the process of concrete dam service. There is no dependence on the effect quantity for overcoming the shortcomings of the traditional identification method. The panel data model is firstly proposed for analyzing the behavior change of composite concrete dam. The change-point theory is used to identify whether the behavior of concrete dams changes during service. The phase space reconstruction technique is used to reconstruct the phase plane of the trend effect component. The time dimension method is used to solve the construction of multi-transformation model of composite panel data. An existing 76.3-m-high dam is used to investigate some key issues on the behavior change. Emphasis is placed on conversion time and location for three time periods consistent with the practical analysis report for evaluating the validity of the analysis method of the behavior variation of concrete dams presented in this paper.
Climate change has often resulted in severe droughts in a rice-farming season (i.e., April to June), and the large amount of water resources were needed to cope with droughts during the season. Therefore, the subsurface dam, which is able to store groundwater resources in the alluvium aquifer, has been considered to be an alternative for securing more groundwater resources. In this study, suitable sites assessment criteria for agricultural subsurface dam using analytic hierarchy process (AHP) were established for adequate drought management. Moreover, the criteria were applied to the existing five agricultural subsurface dams to verify their applicability of groundwater supply for each subsurface dam. The assessment criteria were divided into three major categories (geology, hydrology and business condition) and classified to 12 individual sub-categories with weighting. From the assessment, Ian subsurface dam and Wooil subsurface dam were identified as the best and the worst suitable site, respectively, and this result was in accordance with the average amount of annual groundwater supply by each subsurface dam during the period of 2011-2017.
Ensuring the integrity of a country's infrastructure is necessary to protect surrounding communities in case of disaster. Embankment dam systems across the US are an essential component of infrastructure, referred to as lifeline structures. Embankment dams are crucial to the survival of life and if these structures were to fail, it is imperative that states be prepared. Southern California is particularly concerned with the stability of embankment dams due to the frequent seismic activity that occurs in the state. The purpose of this study was to create a numerical model of an existing embankment dam simulated under seismic loads using previously recorded data. The embankment dam that was studied in Los Angeles, California was outfitted with accelerometers provided by the California Strong Motion Instrumentation Program that have recorded strong motion data for decades and was processed by the Center for Engineering Strong Motion Data to be used in future engineering applications. The accelerometer data was then used to verify the numerical model that was created using finite element modeling software RS2. The results from this study showed Puddingstone Dam's simulated response was consistent with that experienced during previous earthquakes and therefore validated the predicted behavior from the numerical model. The study also identified areas of weakness and instability on the dam that posed the greatest risk for its failure. Following this study, the numerical model can now be used to predict the dam's response to future earthquakes, develop plans for its remediation, and for emergency response in case of disaster.
Recently, the seismic stability evaluation of concrete gravity dams is raised due to the failure of dams occurred by the Izmit, Turkey and JiJi, Taiwan earthquake in 1999. Dams failure may incur loss of life and properties around the dam as well as damage to dam structure itself. Recently, there has been growing much concerns about "earthquake - resistance" or "seismic safety" of existing concrete gravity dams designed before current seismic design provisions were implemented. This research develops three evaluation levels for seismic stability of concrete gravity dams on the basis of the evaluation method of seismic stability of concrete gravity dams in U.S.A., Japan, Canada, and etc. Level 1 is a preliminary evaluation which is for purpose of screening. Level 2 is a pseudo-static evaluation on the basis of the seismic intensity method. And level 3 is a detail evaluation by the dynamic analysis. Evaluation results on existing concrete gravity dams on operation showed good seismic performance under designed artificial earthquake(KHC earthquake).
A computer-assisted desktop is developed for layout design of a concrete gravity dam on the basis of safety and economy. Using a set of regression equations, a dam layout is proposed. With reference to the regression equations and relevant input data, overall dam dimensions are determined by satisfying the stability criteria jointly under usual, unusual, and extreme loading conditions with the desired hydraulic conformity. Among several feasible alternatives, the program enables a designer to select the optimum layout, which corresponds to the minimum total cost of the structure. The method is applied to a case study to examine dimensions of proposed alternatives and to compare them with those of an existing dam.

In this paper the failure of Carsington Dam was discussed based on the informations reported in the first edition of Korean Geotechnical Society News. The causes of dam failure and its influences were evaluated based on the results of the slope stability analysis. The effects of the shear strain pre-existing in the yellow clay disclosed by the post-failure site investigation and the progressive nature of the dam failure were preponderantly evaluated. Stability analysis was performed based on the proposed values of strength parameters characterizing possible field ground conditions at failure. The calculated safety factors were evaluated for different cases of strength parameters in order to find the most probable field ground condition at the dam failue.

Roller-compacted concrete(RCC) dam is a new type that combines advantages of earthfill dam and concrete dam in construction, This method save cost due to their rapid method of construction. RCC is, used in RCC dams, no-slump concrete so it is different that measure method of consistency and mixture properties compare with conventional mass concrete, There are existing two major design method, which one used in USA the other used in Japan. The results obtained in this study would be useful in establishing mixture proportions for dam concrete for RCC dams by apply method of compound their merit.
Seismic safety evaluation of concrete gravity dams is very important because failure of concrete gravity dam may incur huge loss of life and properties around the dam as well as damage to dam structure itself. Recently, there has been growing much concerns about earthquake resistance or seismic safety of existing concrete gravity darns designed before current seismic design provisions were implemented. This research develops the dynamic fluid pressure calculation using 'added mass simulation'. The actual analysis using structural analysis package was performed. According to the analysis results, the vibration which is transverse to water flow seems to be very critical depending on the shape of the dam.
