An experimental study for reducing the exhaust hydrocarbon emission at spark ignition engine using timed secondary air injection is carried out . In this study, secondary air injection timings and durations are controlled to decrease the hydrocarbon emission and to increase exhaust gas temperature at cold and warm-up engine conditions. The hydrocarbon reduction rate and exhaust gas temperature are compared between timed secondary air injection and continuous air injection. The optimum secondary air injection timing for reducing the hydrocarbon emission is at the exhaust valve open timing. At some engine conditions , the hydrocarbon emissions are decreased to 10% of engine raw values and exhaust gas temperatures increase by 20$0^{\circ}C$ with times secondary air injection . Timed secondary air injection has more hydrocarbon reduction rate that continuous secondary air injection except some engine conditions.
The purpose of this study is to suggest the improvement strategies for exhaust performance in composite kitchen hoods. The Exhaust only hood, the 2-way compensating hood and the 3-way compensating hood were selected, and the laboratory experiments were performed to compare the local exhaust efficiency and the indoor temperature distributions according to the variations of the hood type and supply/exhaust air velocity. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. The compensating hood has better performance than exhaust only hood in the aspect of local exhaust efficiency and temperature distribution. The 3-way compensating hood shows the best performance when the supply air velocity is about 2.7 m/s, and the 2-way compensating hood at the supply air velocity of 3.5 w/s. In the same exhaust rate condition, if the exhaust area of the hood is increased and therefore the exhaust velocity is lowered, the supply air velocity is also lowered to get the optimum performance. The optimum exhaust velocity range of the commercial kitchen hood which derived from this study is 0.48 ∼ 0.55 m/s.
In order to evaluate and improve the performance of local exhaust ventilation systems for two TCE degreasing (A, B) and two electroplating (C, E) and one acid dipping & plating (D) operations located in Kimhae, the performance test was conducted with trace gases and a thermal anemometer (Kanomax 24-6111, Japan). For the inadequately designed systems, the improvement and redesigns in compliance with recommendation by ACGIH was suggested. The results of performance test for each system are as follows; 1. System of Workplace A was generally well-designed. Actual exhaust air flow rate was in excess of 68% above the recommended standard exhaust air flow rate. 2. System of Workplace B was very well-designed and completely enclosed. 3. All systems of Workplace C including hoods were poorly-designed and actual exhaust air flow rates were insufficient for open tanks. All systems should be upgraded according to ACGIH recommendations. 4. Supply and exhaust air flow rate of push-pull exhaust systems in Workplace D should be greatly increased. The width of flange of dipping tank hood should be increased with the value suggested. 5. System of Workplace E was well-designed. Actual exhaust air flow rate was in excess of 54% above the required.
This paper presents the optimal design of an exhaust system of a vacuum-compatible air bearing using a genetic algorithm. To use the air bearings in vacuum conditions, the differential exhaust method is adopted to minimize the air leakage, which prevents air from leaking into a vacuum chamber by recovering air through several successive seal stages in advance. Therefore, the design of the differential exhaust system is very important because several design parameters such as the number of seals, diameter and length of an exhaust tube, pumping speed and ultimate pressure of a vacuum pump, seal length and gap(bearing clearance) influence on the air leakage, that is, chamber's degree of vacuum. In this paper, we used a genetic algorithm to optimize the design parameters of the exhaust system of a vacuum-compatible air bearing under the several constraint conditions. The results indicate that chamber's degree of vacuum after optimization improved dramatically compared to the initial design, and that the distribution of the spatial design parameters, such as exhaust tube diameter and seal length, was well achieved, and that technical limit of the pumping speed was well determined.
Local exhaust system used in toilet and cooking place of low-rise public house installed roof ventilator at terminal of stack. There are many high riser public houses in Korea. These buildings were not viewed as being major contributors to exhaust pollutants producted in indoor. It was because many engineers thought that exhaust in high riser public house depends on stack effect. But Neutral pressure level represents in a terminal of stack with air tightness for the best exhaust efficiency. Thereby, lower floors have the worst indoor air quality. This paper focuses mainly on the exhaust efficiency improved by roof fan with motor installed in high riser public house. It is observed there is higher exhaust efficiency than the existing natural roof ventilator.
This paper describes a theoretical analysis and experimental verification on the performances of a vacuum-compatible air bearing, which is designed with a cascaded exhaust scheme to minimize the air leakage in a vacuum environment. The design of the vacuum-compatible air bearing equipped with the differential exhaust system requires great care because several design parameters, such as the number of exhaust stages, diameter of exhaust tube, pumping speed of a vacuum pump, and bearing clearance greatly influence the air leakage and thus degree of vacuum. In this study, a performance analysis method was proposed to estimate the performances of the air bearing, such as load capacity, stiffness, and air leakage. Results indicate that the load capacity and stiffness of the air bearing was improved as its boundary pressure, which was determined by the $1^{st}$ exhaust method, was lowered, and the dominant factors on the chamber's degree of vacuum were the number of exhaust stages, exhaust tube diameter and bearing clearance. A vacuum chamber and air bearing stage using porous pad were fabricated to verify the theoretical analysis. The results demonstrate that chamber pressure up to an order of $10^{-3}$ Pa was achieved with the air bearing stage operating inside the chamber, and this analysis method was valid by comparing predicted values with experimental data, for the mass flow rates from the porous pad, and pressures at each exhaust port and chamber, respectively.
Objectives: The aims of this study are to derive the characteristics of diesel exhaust gas emissions generated during vehicle checking in the garage of fire stations and of the related improvement plans for proper air quality management. Methods: The researcher measured changes in the air quality inside garages according to the operating conditions of the exhaust facility and before and after vehicle checking at three fire stations. Results: During the checking of fire engines, a large volume of hazardous substances exceeding management standards were generated, and improvement of the discharge facilities was required for proper air quality management. Conclusions: It is necessary to study the hazard evaluation of firefighters' exposure to exhaust gas, to operate exhaust gas ventilation facilities, and to prepare technical standards for proper indoor air quality management.
The flow and heat transfer characteristics of the exhaust airflow window system were studied numerically by a finite volume method. Attention was paid to see the decrease in indoor cooling load. The exhaust air flow rate, solar energy power and aspect ratio of window were considered as main variables. From the result of the comparison between the exhaust airflow window and the enclosed window, the indoor heat gain was reduced remarkably by 76%. It is also suggested that in the design of the exhaust airflow window optimum values of aspect ratio, H/W and exhaust air flow rate, Re were about 0.05 and 600, respectively.
To find more efficient exhaust effect, air curtain of upward or downward trend in gas table and left or right side of range hood were made. As result that film vapor from range hood lower part by digital camera, the air current change by moving existence and nonexistence of exhaust fan and direction of air curtain were known. Under all experiment condition, upward air curtain superior exhaust performance.
Numerical modeling has been carried out to investigate the two-dimensional air flow in automobile interior with a forced exhaust close to main air inlet for typical ventilation modes. The characteristics such as streamlines and temperature fields in the passenger compartment room with the forced exhaust are analyzed with comparison of the cases without a forced exhaust. The simulation results show that air flow on the floor near the front seat is increased with the forced exhaust for all ventilation modes. Flow recirculation in the cabin is most active in mode 2 with a vertical suction inlet in comparison with other two modes. In particular, less time is taken for air temperature to reach the inlet temperature due to the forced exhaust for the ventilation modes. Finally, it could be predicted that ventilating air flow is much improved with the forced exhaust in the interior Modeling results in this study can be applied to the optimal design of automobile interior fur air ventilation system.
