  • The purpose of this study was to promote the utilization of wind velocity of kitchen and bathroom exhaust ducts for wind power generation in high-rise apartments. The research content can be summarized as follows: 1) Nine high-rise apartments were examined for the installation of kitchen and bathroom exhaust ducts located in the pipe shaft (PS) section. After selecting simulation candidates, a simulation was performed with the STAR-CCM+ Ver 5.06 program. 2) Of nine high-rise apartments, seven had kitchen and bathroom exhaust ducts, whose cross section was in the range of $0.16m^2{\sim}0.4m^2$. The area ratio between the exhaust ducts and PS section (cross section of exhaust duct/area of PS section ${\times}$ 100) was on average 3.2%. 3) The simulation results were analyzed. As a result, the smaller cross section kitchen and bathroom exhaust ducts had, the more advantages there were for increasing exhaust wind velocity. If an out air inlet duct is installed to the old kitchen and bathroom exhaust ducts, it will increase exhaust wind velocity by 3.01~3.98m/s and contribute to the proper wind velocity level (3.0m/s). 4) When the simultaneous usage rate between the kitchen and bathroom exhaust fan increased from 20% to 60%, exhaust wind velocity increased. The "entire house holds" condition for exhaust fan operation provided more even exhaust wind velocity than the "some house holds" condition. 5) Exhaust wind velocity increased in the order of amplified (T-3), induced (T-2) and vertical (T-1) top of kitchen and bathroom exhaust ducts. Of them, the amplified type (T-3) was under the least influence of external wind velocity and thus the most proper for kitchen and bathroom exhaust duct tops.

  • From the flow analysis of the silencer for 8 kW diesel generators, the following results were obtained. For silencer-1, it was confirmed that the holes formed at the inlet-side portion connect into the exhaust pipe in the chamber. The exhaust pipe installed inside silencer-1 was integrally connected through the holes in the chamber. As a result, it was confirmed that the pressure inside the chamber was kept stable. It was confirmed that the pressure loss generated inside an absorptive type silencer such as silencer-2 was small. The differential pressure of the inlet-outlet of silencer-1 and silencer-2 was confirmed to be 494 Pa at 15 m/s, 859 Pa at 20 m/s, 1326 Pa at 25 m/s, and 1911 Pa at 30 m/s.

  • It has been a principle research topic on the diesel engine development to increase the efficiency and the performance of engine to satisfy the user's needs for high reliability and durability. However, recently with the worldwide concerns at the global climate change and environmental protection, the main target in the diesel engine research has been changed to solve the exhaust emission problem in order to satisfy the strict emission regulations. To reduce the pollutant for the diesel engine, the researchs on the combustion chamber is the most important and has to be performed first of all. The diesel fuel injection system plays major role to air-fuel mixing process and influences engine output, themal efficiency, reliability, noise, and emissions. The experimental studies were conducted by varying the various parametric conditions and the results were campared with the computation and calculated results by using the fuel injection simulation program developed during previous research. From the experiments, the matching technique of a fuel injection pump and nozzle was conducted to understand under the various parametric conditions. Also, the relations between needle lift and wave propagation characteristics in high pressure pipe were examined. The basic design data from the experimentations and computation works would be applied to actual design works of diesel fuel injection system.

  • The effects of fuel injection system on the performance in a V8-type diesel engine was stuided in this paper. Fuel injection system is important factor which influence the engine performance and exhaust emission bcasuse the properties in the injected fuel depend on the atomization characteristics. In this study using diesel engine of 17.7:1 compression ration the engine performance and exhaust emission are measured experimentally according to 1000, 1400, 2200rpm in the full-load conditions. The chosen parameters for the major system are such diameter shape of combustion chamber and intake system. The results are as follows: As the nozzle hole diameter and injection angle become smaller and as the injection timing gets advanced the fuel consumption and concentration of smoke are decreasing whereas concentration of $NO_{x}$ is increasing. Andconcentration of $NO_{x}$ is increasing in accordance with the increase of injection pipe diameter and nozzle protrusion. Also it is shown that re-entrant type combustion chamber is more effective than that of toroidal type in the improvement of $NO_{x}$ reduction.

  • NOx reduction experiments were conducted by direct injection of urea into a diesel fueled, combustion-driven flow reactor which simulated a single engine cylinder ($966cm^3$). NOx reduction tests were carried out over a wide range of air/fuel ratios (A/F=20-40) using an initial NOx level of 530ppm, and for normalized stoichiometric ratios of reductant to NOx (NSR) of 1.5 to 4.0. The results show that effective NOx reduction with urea occurred over an injection temperature range of 1100 to 1350K. NOx reduction increased with increasing NSR values, and about a 40%-60% reduction of NOx was achieved with NSR=1.5-4.0. Most of the NOx reduction occurred within the cylinder and head section (residence time <40msec), since temperatures in the exhaust pipe were too low for additional NOx reduction. Relatively low NOx reduction is believed to be due to the existence of higher levels of CO and unburned hydrocarbons (UHC)inside the cylinder, and large temperature drops along the reactor. Injection of secondary combustible additives (diesel fuel/$C_2H_6$) into the exhaust pipe promoted further substantial NOx reduction (5%-30%) without shifting the temperature windows. Diesel fuel was found to enhance NOx reduction more than $C_2H_6$, and finally practical implications are further discussed.

  • The performance of the CT-TDLAS (computed tomography-tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy) is strongly dependent upon the line broadening functions. The line of the laser beam used in the TDLAS is scattered by the natural broadening, the collisional broadening and the doppler broadening. The influence of the natural broadening to the experimental spectra obtained in the TDLAS is negligible. The influences of the collisional broadening and the doppler broadening to the experimental spectra are relatively large, in high pressure gas flows and in high temperature low pressure gas flows, respectively. In this study, optimal coefficients are proposed for the doppler broadening function by using the experimental data obtained in a flat burner test. The optimal coefficients were ${\gamma}_j=0.16$ and n=0.37. Using these coefficients, the temperature and concentration distributions at the engine exhaust gas pipe have been calculated showing their validities.

  • Construction machinery includes an engine enclosure separated from a cooling system enclosure by a wall to reduce noise and advance cooling system performance. For this structure, however, the axial fan cannot be of benefit to the engine room, and so the temperature rise in the engine room makes several bad conditions. This paper proposes that hot air in engine room is evacuated tv secondary pipe using jet pump. This paper demonstrates the structure and the effect of jet pump and useful guideline on design of area, length, and shape of secondary pipe to maximize the effect of jet pump.

  • The volumetric efficiency is significantly affected by the behavior of pressure wave in induction system and exhaust pipe. By the motion of the piston, there exist pressure fluctuation in induction system which produce waves. Waves are propagated along a pipe bi-directional as they propagated through it, making compression wave and rare-faction(expansion) wave. These wave phenomena can affect to the volumetric efficiency. As a method of improvement of the volumetric efficiency, fuel economy and pollutant emission reduction particularly in low engine speeds, a side-branch additional tunable helmholtz resonator on the secondary pipe of intake system is proposed by use of their acoustic vibrations. Some of results are presented which deal with their physical phenomena for the wave action of intake system in a four-stroke three cylinders diesel engine.
