Pulverization characteristics of H-kenyaite in vibration mill and exfoliation property in epoxy of pulverized H-kenyaite was investigated by using XRD, SEM, TEM. and particle size analyzer. Pulverization was conducted for 0.5~5 h. The particle morphology of sample pulverized for 1 h preserved plate-shape. However, this plate-shape disappeared in the sample pulverized for 3 h. The XRD pattern of sample pulverized for 1 h showed the characteristic peak of H-kenyaite. However, the peak disappeared in samples pulverized above 3 h, indicating severe destruction of H-kenyaite structure. TEM analysis for the kenyaite/epoxy nanocomposites exhibited only gallery expansion of 3~5 nm in non-pulverized sample, but dramatical large expansion of 5~10 nm in the samples pulverized during 1 h. This results confirm that the pulverization of wide plates composed of H-kenyaite particle have largely affect on the formation of an exfoliated kenyaite-polymer nanocomposite.

We have prepared polyster/nanQhybridized polyimide films in the range of 1~9 wt% of organophilic synthetic layered silicate (STN). Firstly, poly(amic acid)/STN nanocomposite solutions were prepared via solution blending method in DMAc or THF/MeOH solution, and then cast on the polyester film followed by imidization reaction, thermal and chemical method repestively. XRD and TEM experiment showed that the STN was fully exfoliated through the polyimide matrix. Surface morphologies of nanohybridized polyimide films were characterized by AFM and thermal, mechanical properties were also confirmed by TGA, DMA and UTM each. And also, the water vapor permeabilities highly depended on the content of STN. The sample from chemical imidization route and THF/MeOH solvent system showed better water vapor barrier properties than thermal one and DMAc system.
When the halogenated flame retardant, decabromodiphenyl oxide, was added to the polypropylene/nylon blend, and was compounded with montmorillonite and compatibilizer, maleic anhydride polypropylene, the improvement of flame retardancy and mechanical properties was investigated. The degree of dispersion between polymer resin and inorganic nanoparticles was investigated, and the flame retardancy and mechanical properties was measured quantitatively. XRD results showed that the montrnorillonite was com-pletely exfoliated after polypropylen/nylon nanocomposites was mixed above twice. By compounding with montmorillonite, polypropylene/nylon blend system was overcome the deterioration of flame retardancy. The tensile strength and impact strength were slightly increased, and by compounding with montmorillonite, the additional increase in mechanical properties was obtained. Therefore, the flame retardancy of polypropylene / nylon blend was decreased by adding nylon, but by compounding with inorganic nanoparticle, improvement of the flame retardancy and mechanical properties was obtained.
The electrochemical behavior of film and charge-discharge capacity of Li-ion cell in 1 M $LiPF_6/EC:DME$ (1 : 1, by volume ratio) electrolyte solution was studied using chronopotentiometry, cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and impedance spectroscopy. The first irreversible capacity was higher than the second irrversible capacity because of solvent decomposition. Especially, passivation film that is electron insulating and ionic conducting were formed on the MPCF by solvent decomposition during the first charge. The solvated Li is co-intercalated with solvent into MPCF electrode. Part of the MPCF is expoliated during co-intercalation of solvent-Li. The MPCF ends up nonuniformly covered by a relatively thick layer of exfoliated particles embedded in a matrix of product by solvent decomposition.

Objective: This study evaluated the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of fixed orthodontic treatment with three different light-cured orthodontic bonding composites by analyzing micronucleus (MN) formation in the buccal mucosa during a 6-month period. Methods: Thirty healthy volunteers were selected from consecutive patients referred for orthodontic treatment. Equilibrium 2 brackets and molar tubes (Dentaurum) were bonded with three different lightcured orthodontic bonding composites-Transbond XT (3M Unitek), Kurasper F (Kuraray Europe), or GrenGloo (Ormco Corporation)- to all teeth in both arches. Exfoliated buccal epithelial cells were scraped from the middle part of the inner cheeks with sterile cement spatulas before treatment and at 1, 3, and 6 months after treatment. MNs and nuclear alterations, such as karyorrhexis (KR), karyolysis (KL), and binucleated cells (BNs), were scored under a light microscope. Repeated measure ANOVA was used to calculate statistical differences in degenerative nuclear abnormalities. Results: MN rates did not significantly differ among different time points within the same cell type (p > 0.05). In contrast, the number of BNs in buccal epithelial cells significantly increased in all composite groups (p < 0.01, Transbond XT; p < 0.001, Kurasper F and GrenGloo). KL frequency significantly increased between the beginning and end of the study in the Kurasfer F ($0.80{\pm}0.79$ to $1.90{\pm}1.10$; p < 0.05) and GrenGloo ($1.30{\pm}1.06$ to $2.40{\pm}1.08$; p < 0.05) groups. Conclusions: After 6 months of fixed orthodontic treatment with different light-cured composites, morphological signs of cytotoxicity were observed but genotoxic effects were absent.
Polymer-clay nanocomposites, a novel organic-inorganic hybrid, attract much attention from both scientific fields and engineering fields due to their balanced improvements in mechanical properties as well as diffusion behaviors, including flame-retarding and barrier properties, with small amounts of clay. Preparation of polymer-clay nanocomposites, summarized as a process for uniform dispersion of hydrophilic layered clays in hydrophobic polymer matrixes, includes several technologies and scientific phenomena, such as surface-modifications of clay layers, physical properties of clays in liquids and dried states, polymer synthesis, polymer rheology, behaviors of polymer solutions/or monomers in the confined geometry, mechanical properties of polymers and clays. To comprehend complicated physical/chemical phenomena involved in the fabrication of nanocomposites, we reviewed physical properties of clays, structures of clays in nanocomposites, characterization of nanocomposites, the relation between morphology and physical property of nanocomposites, surveyed recent research trends, and then suggested a few strategies or methods for fabrication of nanocomposites reflecting future research directions.
Nanocomposite materials provides efficient reinforcement, thermal endurance, and many other advantages depending on the additives used, with applications in the aerospace, automotive, and biomedical industries. Here, epoxy based nanocomposites were synthesized in the presence of Cloisite 15A and characterized with TEM, XRD, TGA, and DMA. To determine the effect of the clay d-spacing, Cloisite 20A was also used to synthesize the nanocompostes. In addition to the traditional hot plate method, an ultrasonicator was used to investigate the effect of different types of mixing on the properties of the nanocomposite; no significant effect was found. An examination of the nanocomposite morphology revealed that all the nanocomposites synthesized yielded an intercalated structure. When 5 wt% of Cloisite 15A was used with 20 min sonication time, the storage modulus increased 10% over the neat(no clay) nanocomposite. In general, the presence of Cloisite 15A produced a better storage modulus than Cloisite 20A.
Statement of problem: Regardless of any restoration, most of case, we used in screw connection between abutment and implant. For this reason, implant screw loosening has been remained problem in restorative practices. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare surface of coated/plated screw with titanium and gold alloy screw and to evaluate physical property of coated/plated material after scratch test in FESEM investigation Material and methods: GoldTite, titanium screw provided by 3i (Implant Innovation, USA) and TorqTite, titanium screw by Steri-Oss (Nobel Biocare, USA) and gold screw, titanium screw by AVANA (Osstem Implant, korea) - were selected for this study. Each abutment screw surface was observed at 100 times, and then screw crest, root, and slope were done more detailed numerical value, at 1000 times with FESEM. A micro-diamond needle was also prepared for the scratch test. Each abutment screw was fixed, micro-diamond scratch the surface of head region was made at constant load and then was observed central region and periphery of fine trace through 1000 times with FESEM. Results: The surface of GoldTite was smoother than that of other kinds of screw and had abundant ductility and malleability compared with titanium and gold screw. The scratch test also showed that teflon particles were exfoliated easily in screw coated with teflon. Titanium screw had a rough surface and low ductility. Conclusion: It was recommended that the clinical use of gold-plated screw would prevent a screw from loosening. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS Clinical use of gold-plated screw would prevent a screw from loosening because it had abundant ductility and malleability compared with titanium and gold screw.
Biodegradable polyurethane (PU)/clay nanocomposite films were prepared via extrusion compounding process followed by casting film process. Organically modified montmorillonite (denoted as C30B) with a large amount of hydroxyl groups on its surface was used for the formation of strong bonding with PU resin. From both XRD analysis and TEM observations, the intercalated and exfoliated structure, and dispersion state of silicate platelets in the compounded nanocomposite films were confirmed. In addition, the rheological and tensile properties, optical transparency, oxygen permeability of the prepared nanocomposites were investigated as a function of added nanoclay content, and moreover based on these results, the corelation between the morphology and the resulting properties of the nanocomposites could be presented. The inclusion of nanoclays at appropriate content resulted in remarkable improvement in the nanocomposite performance including tensile modulus, elongation, transparency, and oxygen barrier property, however at excess amount of nanoclays, reduction or very slight increase was observed due to poor dispersion. The biodegradability of the prepared nanocomposite film was evaluated by examining the deterioration in the barrier and tensile properties during degradation period under compost.
After the construction (1398 year at first, secondarily reconstructed at 1448 year), the Soongryemoon (South Gate) had been preserved to late 19c without large damages. The present shape of the gate have been kept after the repairments of two times (1953, 1963). However, the rocks constituting the walls of the gate have been strongly weathered, exfoliated and cracked due to severe changes in the environment as traffic increase, air pollution and the subway which may seem also to cause the structural unstability. The rocks composed of the walls of the gate are almost of granites. On the rocks such deteriorations as onion structure, surface exfoliation, cracks, and edge breakout are developed. These deteriorations may be caused genetically by strong weathering, differential load due to possibly structural unstability, impact and unknown reasons. For the establishment of conservation plan, the factors of these deterioration phenomena and structural unstability must be quantitatively analyzed and diagnosed in detail.
