  • In rehabilitation programs involving muscle re-education and endurance exercise, it is necessary to confirm when fatigue occurs. It is also necessary to quantify fatigue, to confirm whether the muscle has been exercised sufficiently. In general, as fatigue occurs, the force-generating ability of the muscle is reduced. If the median frequency (MDF) obtained from electromyogram (EMG) power spectrum is correlated highly with work, then the timing and degree of fatigue may be confirmed. This study examined the relationship between work and MDF obtained from the EMG power spectrum during repetitive isokinetic exercise. Surface EMG signals were collected from biceps brachii and vastus lateralis of 52 normal subjects (26 males, 26 females) at $120^{\circ}/sec$ and $60^{\circ}/sec$ while performing an isokinetic exercise. The exercise was finished at 25% of peak work. MDF data was obtained using a moving fast Fourier transformation (FFT), and random noise was removed using the inverse FFT, then a new MDF data was obtained from the main signal. There was a high correlation between work and MDF during repetitiv isokinetic exercise in the biceps brachii and vastus lateralis of males and the biceps brachii of females (r=.50~.77). However, there was a low correlation between work and MDF in the vastus lateralis of females (r=.06~.19).

  • PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of ten minutes of manual passive exercise performed by physical therapists on autonomic nervous system. METHODS: Thirty-five healthy adults, both male and female, were chosen as subjects for this study. The autonomic nervous system was measured by heart rate variability (HRV),before and after passive exercise using the following measurements: mean heart rate (mean HRT), low frequency (LF) and high frequency (HF) components, the LF/HF ratio, root mean square of the successive differences (RMSSD), and the HRV index. The exercise was performed on the subjects by a physical therapist with seven years of experience specializing in the nervous system. The exercise was conducted at the mid-range of motion on the upper and lower limbs of the subjects for two minutes and thirty seconds and for a total of ten minutes. RESULTS: There was a significant increase in the LF component. The mean HRT and the LF/HF ratio both increased, but these increases were not significant. The HF component, RMSSD, and HRV index all decreased, but these decreases were not significant. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, mid-range manual passive exercise does not induce stress on the autonomic nervous system. It can safely be performed by a physical therapist.

  • A method of measuring heart rate using photoplethysmograph(PPG) signal during exercise is proposed. PPG's are composed of strong base tones and their harmonics, and the strong base tones are trackable by the adaptive notch filter (ANF) which adjusts its coefficients to minimize the output power. The proposed heart rate measurement algorithm continuously notches the frequency component with the maximum power in the measured PPG, so that the fundamental frequency corresponding to heart rate is traced. We also presents methods of detecting degeneration and impulsive noise blocks to minimize the coefficient fluctuation. Experiments were conducted using real PPG signals captured during exercise. Results showed that the proposed algorithm is capable of consistently tracking the heart rate embedded in the noisy PPG's.

  • The purpose of this study was to confirm that regular physical exercise habit and calcium intake play a role in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, particularly to confirm that regular exercise is important in reducing serum lipid levels in postmenopausal women. Subjects were classified into regular exercise group(more than 3 times/wk, more than 30 min per exercise) and non-regular exercise group. A convenient frequency method was used to assess the nutritional intake of subjects. Anthropometric measurement such as body weight and height, and blood pressure were measured. There was no significant difference between non-regular exercise group and regular exercise group in energy intake and calcium intake. The total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol concentrations in non-regular exercise group were significantly higher than those in regular exercise group. There were no significant correlations between age or weight with blood lipids and blood pressure in regular exercise group, while there were significant positive correlations between age or weight with blood lipids and blood pressure in non-regular exercise group. The levels of serum cholesterol, triglyceride, blood pressure and atherogenic index increased with age in non-regular exercise women. The blood pressure in low total Ca intake/plant Ca intake ratio group was significantly higher than that in high total Ca intake/plant Ca intake ratio group. There was a highly significant positive correlation between Ca intake and HDL-cholesterol in non-regular exercise women. And, there was a highly significant negative correlation between Ca intake and blood pressure in regular exercise women. The results suggest that increased habitual physical activity and calcium intake should be recommended by way of decreasing blood lipids and blood pressure in postmenopausal women. • Limitation of a questionnaire survey which is widely used is time and money, limited numbers of participants, biased confidence interval and unreliable results. To overcome these, we performed tendency and network analysis of diet using big Data in Koreans. The keyword on diet were collected from the portal site Naver from January 1, 2015 until December 31, 2015 and collected data were analyzed by simple frequency analysis, N-gram analysis, keyword network analysis and seasonality analysis. The results showed that diet menu appeared most frequently by N-gram analysis, even though exercise had the highest frequency by simple frequency analysis. In addition, keyword network analysis were categorized into four groups: diet group, exercise group, commercial diet program company group and commercial diet food group. The analysis of seasonality showed that subjects' interests in diet had increased steadily since February, 2015, although subjects were most interested indiet in July, these results suggest that the best strategies for weight loss are based on diet menu and starting diet before July. As people are especially sensitive to diet trends, researches are needed about annual analysis of big data.
