Induction motor requires a rotating magnetic for rotation. Current required to generate the rotating magnetic field is magnetizing current. This magnetizing current is associated with the reactive power. This reactive power must be supplied from source side. Therefore, the power factor of the induction motor is low. So, the capacitor is installed on the motor terminals to compensate for the low power factor. Power supply company has recommended to maintain a high power factor to the customer. If the capacitor current is greater than the magnetizing current of the motor, there is a possibility that the self-excitation occurs. So it is necessary to calculate the optimal capacity capacitor current does not exceed the magnetizing current. In this study, we first compute the no-load current and the reactive power of the induction motor and then calculates the limit of the maximum power factor without causing self-excitation.
In order to detect and monitor the broken cords of steel-cord belt from being damaged by impact of large lump of materials and the corrosion of steel cord, we developed a non-contact magnetic coil detection system. This measures the deterioration of reinforcing cables in steel cord conveyor belt which transport the ores in raw material plant. In this research, magnetic coil sensor of broken-cord detection system has exciting part and sensing part. The broken-cord detection system is operated by supplying a transmitter coil with electric power to generate magnetic field, and then the change of induced voltage is detected in each receiver coils due to resultant magnetic flux effected by the broken steel cords at the inside of the conveyor belt. By the informations such as the position and size of the broken steel cords obtained by SCBMS(Steel Cord Belt Monitoring System), it is expected that not only the span of belt life will be lengthened, but also this system can enable operators to plan scheduled maintenance and prevent the enlargement of damaged parts in steel cord belt at an early stage

Magnetic hyperthermia mediated by superparamagnetic particles is mainly based in sinusoidal waveforms as excitation signals. Temperature changes are conventionally explained by rotation of the particles in the surrounding medium. This is a hypothesis quite questionable since habitual experimental setups only produce changes in the magnetic module, not in the field lines trajectories. Theoretical results were tested by changing the waveform of the exciting signal in order to compare non-sinusoidal signals against sinusoidal signals. Experiments were done at different frequencies: 200 KHz, 400 KHz, 600 KHz, 800 KHz and 1 MHz. Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide samples (SPION), made of magnetite ($Fe_3O_4$) and suspended in water (100 mg/ml), were used. Magnetic field strength varies from $0.1{\pm}0.015KA/m$ to $0.6{\pm}0.015KA/m$. In this study was observed that the power loss depends on the applied frequency: for 1 to 2.5 RMS current the responses for each signal are part of the higher section of the exponential function, and for 3.5 to 8 RMS current the response is clearly the decrement exponential function's tale (under $1{\times}10^3LER/gr$).

The method of measurement for contactless eddy-current conductivity using magnetic dipole field theory was suggested by M.C Chen[1], which calculate the eddy-current caused by exciting coil with Faraday's induction law. In this work, we have developed the apparatus for contactless measurement of conductivity or resistivity with the dipole field theory. The resistivity can be measured from several to a dozen $m{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ range within maximum 30% error. At the high resistivity range above $100{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$, the standard deviation of measurement was very large as the induced voltage of sensing coil is small so it was difficult to measure the value precisely.

The integrity of the turbine rotors can be assessed by measuring the material properties at service temperature. In order to evaluate the remanent life of turbine rotor steel nondestructively, a measurement system of reversible magnetic permeability using an alternating perturbing magnetic field was constructed. We present a new non-destructive method to evaluate the remanent life of 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel using the value of reversible magnetic permeability. This method is based on the existence of reversible magnetic permeability in the differential magnetization around the coercive field strength. We measured the first harmonics voltage induced in a coil using a lock-in amplifier tuned to an exciting frequency. The Results of reversible magnetic Permeability and Wickers hardness on the aged samples show that the peak interval of reversible magnetic permeability (PIRMP) and Vickers hardness decreases as aging time increases. A softening curve is obtained from the correlation between Vickers hardness and the PIRMP. This curve can be used as a non-destructive method to evaluate the remanent life of turbine rotor steel.

The possibility of noncontact excitation of vibrations in a shaft was investigated in order to enable online structural health monitoring of a shaft during its rotating condition without stop operation. The proposed noncontact exciter was devised to exclusively generate one of two shaft vibration modes, so called longitudinal and flexural. Using the prototypes and a lot of experiments on them, it was proven that bias magnetic field, exciting voltage, center frequency, and geometry of yokes have crucial impacts on its output characteristics.
According to the historical documents and paintings in many civilizations, rocks that fell from the sky fascinated humans as the message from the God or supernaturals. Scientific progress allows humans to recognize these exciting extraterrestrial objects as meteorites. Meteorites contain a wealth of pivotal information regarding formation of the early Solar System. Meteorites also provide broader scientific insights on, for example, the origin of life, interplanetary transfer of life forms, massive depletion of biosphere on Earth, and evolution of lithosphere on Earth-like planetary bodies.
We present a new procedure to evaluate the degradation in a lCr-lMo-0.25V steel. The method is based on the existence of the peak of reversible permeability in the differential magnetization around the coercive field strength. The apparatus is based on the detection of the voltage induced in a surface type coil using a lock-in amplifier tuned to a frequency to the exciting one. Results obtained the reversible permeability and Vickers hardness on the annealed samples show the peak interval of reversible permeability and Vickers hardness decreased as ageing time increased. The correlation between Vickers hardness and the peak interval of reversible permeability could well be evaluated non destructively.
Toroidal cores made of metallic powder requires large magnetic field strength up to few decade kA/m to obtain major hysteresis loop. To overcome thermal heat generation problem from large exciting current during measurement, we have employed a real time hysteresis loop tracer which can digitize and calculate B-H signals in personal computer as real time. For example, when we magnetize specimen at 10 Hz frequency, we could display hysteresis loops 10 times per second. Using the real time hysteresis loop tracer, we could measure major hysteresis loop of toroidal shape metallic powder core at maximum flux density or maximum magnetic field strength to be measured within 5 second not to significant increasement of specimen temperature due to the heat dissipation from coil windings. For the constructed hysteresis loop tracer, we could measure hysteresis loop at magnetic field strength higher than 50 kA/m for the toroidal shape specimen.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI) is one of the most expensive and sophisticated diagnostic tool and has been hailed as the most exciting event in medical imaging "since the introduction of X-rays", but a major disadvantage, high cost, is coming into focus especially in our country. To determine the status of distribution of MR imagers in Korea and to serve as a basic material for an efficient utilization of this Imaging machine, a retrospective survey of nationwide and regional(3 hospitals in Pusan) installations was performed. The results were as follows : 1. As of April 30, 1991, a total of 33 MRI units(24 for superconducting, 6 for permanent and 3 for resistive units) were set up and operated. 91% of the units were distributed in big cities with no one installation in 7 provinces among 12 provinces in our country. 85% of the units were imported. 2. Although 42.4% of the units were operated in Seoul, Taejeon had the best condition for the distribution of this imaging machine per population, hospital, and bed in Korea. 3. In Pusan : a) 5 units were operated with all superconducting magnet and medium magnetic field in type of machine. b) 80.1 % of the examinations were central nervous system(CNS). c) MRI examination occupied 1.4% of all radiographic examinations and the patients referred from other hospitals were composed of 23.4%% of all patients. 4. The average days under operating of MRI unit a week in Puasn were higher(5.5) than that of Seoul(4.5), but the average number of examinations and hours a week and a day, respectively(33, 8.4), was less than that of Seoul(57, 12.9). 5. The patients with positive MRI findings in a hospital(B) in Pusan was 74.5% on an average.
