  • Damage detection in civil engineering structures using the change in dynamic system parameters has gained a lot of scientific interest during the last decade. By repeating a dynamic test on a structure after a certain time of use, the change in modal parameters can be used to quantify and qualify damages. To be able to use the modal parameters confidentially for damage evaluation, the effect of other parameters such as excitation type, ambient conditions,... should be considered. In this paper, the influence of excitation type on the dynamic system parameters of a highway prestressed concrete bridge is investigated. The bridge, B13, lies between the villages Vilvoorde and Melsbroek and crosses the highway E19 between Brussels and Antwerpen in Belgium. A drop weight and ambient vibration are used to excite the bridge and the response at selected points is recorded. A finite element model is constructed to support and verify the dynamic measurements. It is found that the difference between the natural frequencies measured using impact weight and ambient vibration is in general less than 1%.

  • The permanent magnet synchronous motor windings are energized by sinusoidal excitation current. The frequency of the winding excitation current is synchronous with motor movement and the phase is a function of the motor position with respect to the stator. The total operational speed range of the system is substantially incresed by controlling the phase of the excitation currents at a function of the desired speed. This becomes the torque angle between stator rotating field and motor position. In this paper, torque angle control method is described for surface permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM). The control circuit for realizing control method is investigated and the system test is carried out.

  • The Test Signal Method is adopted to analyze the impact of thyristor controlled series capacitor (TCSC) on sub-synchronous oscillation. The results show that the simulation system takes the risk of Sub-synchronous Oscillation (SSO) while the TCSC is operating in the capacitive region. A supplementary excitation damping controller (SEDC) is used to mitigate SSO caused by the TCSC. A new optimization method which is aimed for optimal phase compensation is proposed. This method is realized by using the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The simulation results show that the SEDC designed by this method has superior suitability, and that the secure operation scope of the TCSC is greatly increased.

  • In the development of very high head pumped storage projects, one of the critical problems is the strength of pumpturbine runners. Data obtained by stress measurements of high head pump-turbine runners indicated that dynamic stress due to the vibration of runner might be detrimental, possibly to cause fatigue failure, if the runner were designed without proper consideration on its dynamic behaviour. Numerous field stress measurements of runners and model tests conducted with hydrodynamic similarity revealed that the hydraulic excitation force developed by the interference of rotating runner blades with guide vane wakes sometimes would induce such heavy vibration of runner. Theoretical and experimental investigations on both the hydraulic excitation force and the natural frequencies of runner have been conducted to explore this forced vibration problem.

  • For CSLDV, the Chebyshev demodulation (or polynomial) technique and Hilbert transform approach have been used for mode shape reconstruction with harmonic excitation. In this paper, the Hilbert-Huang transform approach was applied as an alternative to impact excitation cases in terms of a numerical approach. The vibration of the tested structure is modeled using impulse response functions. In order to verify this technique, a simply supported beam was chosen as the test rig. With additional innovative steps which are the ideal-band pass filter and the nodal point determination, Hilbert-Huang transformation can be used for a good mode shape reconstruction even in the impact excitation case.

  • A new improved excitation control system for power plant synchronous generators has been developed by KEPRI(Korea Electric Power Research Institute). In this paper a description of the developed control system with detailed design concept is given. Field tests are conducted to show the system performance and to obtain the model parameters. Based on the measurement approached by field tests excitation model parameters supposing a mathmatical model is given can be determinded. This paper also proposes a algorithm of parameter estimation and identification in the synchronous Generator Excitation Control System.

  • Usually vibration properties are obtained from frequency response functions or impulse response functions of a system. Since the contact type sensors can affect the characteristics of vibrating systems, the non-contact type sensors such as laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV) are being widely used. Currently researches are being carried out in terms of modal analysis using a scanning vibrometer. For the continuous scan; the Chebyshev demodulation (or polynomial) is apparently suggested to extract the mode shapes. With single frequency sinusoidal excitation, this approach is well fitted. In this research, the Chebyshev demodulation technique has been applied to the impact excitation case. The vibration of the tested structure is modeled using impulse response functions. The technique is also adopted to the random excitation case. In order to verify the technique, a simply supported beam was chosen as the test rig. The calculation modules are developed by using MATLAB$\^$(R)/ in WindowsNT$\^$(R)/ environment.

  • An excitation table is commonly used for vibration and ride tests for parts or assemblies of automobiles, aircrafts, or other heavy systems. The authors have analyzed several kinematic properties of an excitation table that is under development for heavy transport vehicles. It consists of one table and 7 linear hydraulic actuators. The authors have performed mobility analysis, inverse kinematics, forward kinematics, and singularity analysis. Especially, we have proposed a fast forward kinematic solution considering the limited motion of the excitation table. On the assumption that the motion variables such as rotation angles and displacements are small, the forward kinematic problem is converted to the observer problem of a linear system. This provides a fast solution. Also we have verified that there are no singularity points in the working range by numerical analysis.

  • This paper is to study and realize a measuring device for complex dielectric constants. The device is consisted in order of interface unit, external RAM, programmable counter, D/A converter, measuring circuit, Sample & Hold circuit, A/D converter and related control circuits. Various excitation waves are digitalized and sent to the 4096 static RAM by personal computer. These data saved in the RAM are converted to analog excitation waves through D/A converter. The frequency of excitation wave is depend on the read-out speed of the RAM according to clock pulses. Such generated waves are applied to dielectrics under test and their responses are sampled and converted to digital data through A/D converter. The computer takes the digital data and calculates finally the complex dielectric constants. The frequencies for Measurement ranges from 0.04 Hz to 10 kHz.
