Many tall buildings possess through-building gaps at middle levels of the building elevation. Some of these floors are used as sky gardens, or refuge floors, through which wind can flow with limited blockage. It has been reported in the literature that through-building gaps can be effective in reducing across-wind excitation of tall buildings. This paper systematically examines the effectiveness of two configurations of a through-building gap, at the mid-height of a tall building, in reducing the wind-induced dynamic responses of the building. The two configurations differ in the pattern of through-building opening on the gap floor, one with opening through the central portion of the floor and the other with opening on the perimeter of the floor around a central core. Wind forces and moments on the building models were measured with a high-frequency force balance from which dynamic building responses were computed. The results show that both configurations of a through-building gap are effective in reducing the across-wind excitation with the one with opening around the perimeter of the floor being significantly more effective. Wind pressures were measured on the building faces with electronic pressure scanners to help understand the generation of wind excitation loading. The data suggest that the through-building gap reduces the fluctuating across-wind forces through a disturbance of the coherence and phase-alignment of vortex excitation.

A two-stroke diesel engine and a propeller normally adopted in large merchant ships are regarded as major ship vibration sources. They are directly connected and generate various excitation components proportional to the rotating speed of diesel engine. Among the components, the magnitude of two excitation components with the same frequency generated by both engine and propeller can be compensated by the adjustment of their phase difference. It can be done by the optimization of propeller assembly angle but requires a number of burdensome trials to find the optimal angle. In this paper, the efficient estimation method to determine optimal propeller assembly angle is proposed. Its application requires the axial vibration measurement in sea trial and the numerical vibration analysis for propulsion shafting which can be substituted by additional vibration measurement after one-trial modification of propeller assembly angle. In order to verify the validity of the proposed method, the phase difference between two fifth order excitation components generated by both diesel engine and propeller of a real ship is calculated by the finite element analysis and its result is indirectly validated by the comparison of axial vibration responses at intermediate shaft obtained by the numerical analysis and the measurement in sea trial. Finally, it is numerically confirmed that axial vibration response at intermediate shaft at a resonant speed can be decreased more than 87 % if the optimal propeller assembly angle determined by the proposed method is applied.

A reaction wheel is commonly used, as an important actuator, to control the attitude of a satellite. Operation of the reaction wheel plays a role of an excitation source to loading equipment inside the satellite. As requirements for environmental vibration to manifest the performance of precision equipment are getting more stringent, the research for analysis or reduction of unwanted action force in high frequency range when operating the reaction wheel is necessary. In this paper, the procedure to extract input forces and damping of a rotor system of reaction wheel is suggested. The analysis for measured action forces of reaction wheel is accomplished and important higher harmonics of action forces are determined. The input forces and damping of the rotor system are, then, extracted by curve-fitting and a particular solution for input force.

In the design of structure, the forces acting on tai structure are key parameter fur noise and vibration control. However, in the complex structure, the forces at the injection point on the structure cannot be measured directly. So, it is necessary to find out Indirect force evaluation method. In this paper, forces have been measured with In-situ vibration responses and system information. And, three existing techniques of indirect force measurement, vita. direct inverse. principal component analysis and regularization have been compared. This paper shows that multi-vibration responses are essential for talc precise estimation of the forces. To check these conditions, rotary compressor is adopted as test sample, because it is very difficult to measure the injection forces from internal excitation to shell. It alas also been obtained that relatively higher force is transmitted through three welding paths to the compressor shell. It shows a good agreement between direct and indirect force evaluation with curvature shell and plate.

Linear pulse rootor (LPM) be suitable a field where smooth linear rootion of high precision is required, because it's structured with minute teeth pitch in airgap of between and stator and roover(forcer). Force and position of LPM are effected sensitively by the teeth pitch, air gap, permanent magnet and excitation current. So, LPM is much important to analyze the force characteristics. llis paper was awlied to perrreance roothed for force calculation at airgap. The airgap of LPM is maintained from the pressure generated by an air-bearing. Simplified airflow and permeance methods will be used to calculate the air gap under static conditions. Therefore, the maximum available force is then derived using the coenergy method with variable air gap, also normal force and linear thrust was acquired from variable minute displacement 1[mm]. 1[mm].

This paper investigates the effects of acoustic forcing on NOx emissions and mixing process in the near field region of turbulent hydrogen nonpremixed flames. The resonance frequency was selected to force the coaxial air jet acoustically, because the resonance frequency is effective to amplify the forcing amplitude and reduce NOx emissions. When the resonance frequency is acoustically excited, a streamwise vortex is formed in the mixing layer between the coaxial air jet and coflowing air. As the vortex develops downstream, it entrains both ambient air and combustion products into the coaxial air jet to mix well. In addition, the strong vortex pulls the flame surface toward the coaxial air jet, causing intense chemical reaction. Acoustic excitation also causes velocity fluctuations of coaxial air jet as well as fuel jet but, the maximum value of centerline fuel velocity fluctuation occurs at the different phases of $\Phi$=$180^{\circ}$ for nonreacting case and $\Phi$=$0^{\circ}$ for reacting case. Since acoustic excitation enhances the mixing rate of fuel and air, the line of the stoichiometric mixture fraction becomes narrow. Finally, acoustic forcing at the resonance frequency reduces the normalized flame length by 15 % and EINOx by 25 %, compared to the flame without acoustic excitation.

Modal participation factor (MPF) is a widely used in a mode-coupling squeal noise problem for finding the most sensitive component over a complex brake system in a vehicle using eigenvectors of sub-components. This methodology requires the problematic total response of system by the unstable squeal noise at a specific frequency as well as eigenvectors of each component belonging to brake system. In this paper, a unit-force response analysis is performed for intact total system to obtain eigenvectors of each component and then such data is directly used for the contribution analysis of a squeal noise problem. Since the eigenvectors of each component induced from virtual unit-excitation is most reliable owing to the intact boundary condition, it can be expected that the corresponding contribution analysis with MPF also provides a trustworthy result.
Accurate peak response estimation of a seismically excited structure with frictional damping system (FDS) is very difficult since the structure with FDS shows nonlinear behavior dependent on the structural period, loading characteristics, and relative magnitude between the frictional force and the excitation load. Previous studies have estimated the peak response of the structure with FDS by replacing a nonlinear system with an equivalent linear one or by employing the response spectrum obtained based on nonlinear time history and statistical analysis. In case that earthquake excitation is defined probabilistically, corresponding response of the structure with FDS becomes to have probabilistic distribution. In this study, nonlinear time history analyses were performed for the structure with FDS subjected to artificial earthquake excitation generated using Kanai-Tajimi filter. An equation for the probability density function (PDF) of the displacement response is proposed by adapting the PDF of the normal distribution. Coefficients of the proposed PDF are obtained by regression of the statistical distribution of the time history responses. Finally, the correlation between the resulting PDFs and statistical response distribution is investigated.
This paper presents a novel time-domain method for the identification of plastic rotations and stiffness parameters of single-bay frames with nonlinear plastic hinges. Each plastic hinge is modelled as a pseudo-semi-rigid connection with nonlinear hysteretic moment-curvature characteristics at an element end. Through the comparison of the identified end rotations of members that are connected together, the plastic rotation that furnishes information of the locations and plasticity degrees of plastic hinges can be identified. The force consideration of the frame members may be used to relate the stiffness parameters to the elastic rotations and the excitation. The damped-least-squares method and damped-and-weighted-least-squares method are adopted to estimate the stiffness parameters of frames. A noise-removal strategy employing a de-noising technique based on wavelet packets with a smoothing process is used to filter out the noise for the parameter estimation. The numerical examples show that the proposed method can identify the plastic rotations and the stiffness parameters using measurements with reasonable level of noise. The unknown excitation can also be estimated with acceptable accuracy. The advantages and disadvantages of both parameter estimation methods are discussed.
This paper deals with the dynamic stability of nanocomposite pipes conveying pulsating ferrofluid. The pipe is reinforced by carbon nanotubes (CNTs) where the agglomeration of CNTs are considered based on Mori-Tanaka model. Due to the existence of CNTs and ferrofluid flow, the structure and fluid are subjected to axial magnetic field. Based on Navier-Stokes equation and considering the body forced induced by magnetic field, the external force of fluid to the pipe is derived. For mathematical modeling of the pipe, the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) is used where the energy method and Hamilton's principle are used for obtaining the motion equations. Using harmonic differential quadrature method (HDQM) and Bolotin's method, the motion equations are solved for calculating the excitation frequency and dynamic instability region (DIR) of the structure. The influences of different parameters such as volume fraction and agglomeration of CNTs, magnetic field, structural damping, viscoelastic medium, fluid velocity and boundary conditions are shown on the DIR of the structure. Results show that with considering agglomeration of CNTs, the DIR shifts to the lower excitation frequencies. In addition, the DIR of the structure will be happened at higher excitation frequencies with increasing the magnetic field.
