  • Heterogeneous anion exchange membranes were prepared by compression molding for the recovery of sulfate ion from waste water. The swelling ratio, transport number, and ion exchange capacity of the heterogeneous anion exchange membranes were increased and their electrical resistances were decreased as the amount of ion exchange resin content in the matrix was raised. The tensile strength of the heterogeneous anion exchange membrane was decreased with increasing the amount of ion exchange resin in the LLDPE. The tensile strength for the LDPE heterogeneous membrane containing 30 wt% anion exchange resin showed the highest value. The water content increased with increasing amount of ion exchange resin in the membrane. Moreover the highest transport number of the membrane was 0.86. The electrical resistance of LDPE matrix membrane with 50 wt% resin showed $46.5{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$. Current efficiency of electrodialysis for sulfate ion showed the highest value at the current density of $125 mA/cm^2$ in 0.5 mol/L sulfuric acids solution.

  • The simultaneous determination of anions ($SO_4 ^{2-},\;Cl^-,\;and\;NO_3^-$) and cations ($Na^+,\;NH^{4+},\;K^+,\;Mg^{2+},\;and\;Ca^{2+}$) in natural water obtained by Nakdong River waters system in Korea were performed by ion-exclusion/cationexchange chromatography with conductimetric detection. The stationary phase was a polymethacrylate-based weakly acidic cation-exchange resin column in the $H^+$-form and a weak-acid eluent. When using only a 1.4 mM sulfosalicylic acid/6 mM 18-crown-6 ether as an eluent, good resolution of both anions and cations, minimum time required for the separation, and satisfactory detection sensitivity were obtained in a reasonable time. The method was successfully applied to the simultaneous determination of anions and cations in natural waters.

  • The methods of separation and recovery of rare earth elements in monazite sand have been studied by the ion exchange chromatography. Both of cation and anion exchange resin were used as ion exchange resins and the solutions of EDTA, DTPA, IMDA and Ln-EDTA were used as eluents. The H+, Zn2+, Fe3+, Al3+, Cu2+, and NH4+ forms of cation exchange resin were used as retaining ions. Ln-EDTA solution was loaded on the EDTA form of anion exchange resin and separated. The Ln-EDTA solution was also used as an eluent for a selective separation of one element from the rare earth mixture solution. The size effects of resin column, the elution mechanism for the various elution types and the separation of a large amount of rare earths were studied.

  • The CKD extract is wastewater from which KCl in CKD has been removed to reuse CKD as a cement raw material, and tried to reuse no extracts due to problems such as wastewater treatment facility expansion. As a result of removing KCl by the ion exchange method, the pH of the extract after ion exchange decreased from 12.7 to less than pH 2, and it was confirmed that H+ of the cation exchange resin was dissolved in the extract through ion exchange. In addition, the selectivity of the ion exchange was removed in the order of Ca2+, K+, it was determined that the increase in the contact time to remove the K+ ions. The batch system had a contact time of 6 times or more, compared to the continuous system, and showed 4 times of K+ removal efficiency and 7 times of Cl- removal efficiency. It was showed by analyzing the pH of the extract that more H+ of the cation exchange resin was extracted than OH- of anion exchange resin as the pH of the extract was changed.

  • A manufacturing method has been devised to prepare novel heterogeneous cation exchange membranes by mixing ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers with a commercial cation exchange resin. Optimum material characteristics, mixture ratios and manufacturing conditions have been worked out for achieving favorable membrane performance. Ion exchange capacity, electrical resistance, water uptake, swelling ratio and tensile strength properties were measured. SEM analysis was used to monitor morphology. Effects of vinyl acetate (VA) content, melt index (MI) and ion exchange resin content on properties of heterogeneous cation exchange membranes have been discussed. An application test was carried out by mounting a selected membrane in a membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) system to investigate its desalination capability. 0.92 meq/g of ion exchange capacity, $8.7{\Omega}.cm^2$ of electrical resistance, $40kgf/cm^2$ of tensile strength, 19% of swelling ratio, 42% of water uptake, and 56.4% salt removal rate were achieved at best. VA content plays a leading role on the extent of physical properties and performance; however, MI is important for having uniform distribution of resin grains and achieving better ionic conductivity. Overall, manufacturing cost has been suppressed to 5-10% of that of homogeneous ion exchange membranes.

  • This paper aims at analyzing the process capability and at determining an optimal condition by experimental designs using the 2-way classification with repitition in order to maintain lower Nacl content and to refine both of a very small quantity of fatty acid and various magnetic ions in the glycerin to use ion exchange resin treatment process. An optimal condition of each level combination in both of passing temperature of cation exchange resin($A_1$, $A_2$, $A_3$) and of anion exchange resin($B_1$, $B_2$, $B_3$) is $A_3B_3$. The process capability index is improved from 0.63 to 1.40 and is interpreted as a desirable state. This analysis of process capability by experimental designs will contribute to improving productivity and quality of products.

  • The affection of activated carbon on the dissolved aluminum ion in drinking water has been observed. In addition, the aluminum ion removal capability of activated, alumina, chitosan, and ion exchange resin have been investigated. Experimental results indicated that the coal based activated carbon released considerable amount of aluminum ion to the water while coconut shell based activated carbon didn't. However the release was not continuous. Activated alumina didn't show any recognizable removal capability for aluminum ion in water. Particulate chitosan has removed aluminum ion although dissolved chitosan has not. However it need to development a regeneration process for chitosan to be an effective mean for aluminum ion removal. Ion exchange resin showed a reliable aluminum ion removal capability. The ion exchange capacity was 2.63 meq/g resin for the aluminum ion in drinking water.

  • To extract arabinogalactan from larch (Larix Leptolepis), chips immersed with water(20-$90^{\circ}C$) for 1hr, were defiberized by refiner. The liquors were recovered and purified to pure arabinogalactan by ion exchange resin(IRC-50 a. IR-45) or MgO. Additionally the optimal condition in purification with MgO was also investigated. 1. The amounts of solids(crude sugars) and pure arabinogalctan in solids are 8.6-11.3% and 7.3-8.5%(raw material = 100), respectively. 2. Phenolic materials in crude sugars are removed up to 96-89% by ion exchange resin and 94-88% by MgO, while recovery yields of pure arabinogalactan are 81-75% on purification with ion exchange resin and 91-87% on purification with MgO. 3. The optimal conditions of purification with MgO are the addition of 35mg MgO/0.5g of crude sugars, 45 minutes at $70^{\circ}C$, or 25 mg MgO, 30 minutes at $85^{\circ}C$.

  • We explored changes in soil nitrogen (N) availability in a thinned (control, light, moderate, and heavy thinning) Larix leptolepis plantation determined by using ion exchange resin bags. Nitrogen availability varied among measurement periods, however, total available N (ammonium plus nitrate) concentrations did not change significantly in the 1 year since thinning. We found higher N availability in summer and fall than in winter.

  • $Pb^{2+}$ removal capacity and initial $Pb^{2+}$ removal rate were compared between non-biomaterials (granular activated carbon, powdered activated carbon, ion exchange resin, zeolite) and biomaterials (activated sludge, Aureobasidium pullulans, Saccharomyces cerevisiae). The $Pb^{2+}$ removal capacity of biomaterials were greater than that of non-biomaterials, generally. The $Pb^{2+}$ removal capacities of non-biomaterials and biomaterials were shown on the order of ion exchange resin > zeolite > granular activated carbon > powdered activated carbon and A. pullulans > S. cerevisiae > activated sludge, respectively. In the initial $Pb^{2+}$ removal rate, the non-biomaterials showed powdered activated carbon > granular activated carbon > zeolite > ion exchange resin and the biomaterials showed A. pullulans > activated sludge > S. cerevisiae. Comparing the $Pb^{2+}$ removal capacity and initial $Pb^{2+}$ removal rate of activated sludge with those of other non-biomaterials and biomaterials, activated sludge may have an availability on the removal of heavy metal ions by the economical and pratical aspects.
