  • When luting indirect restorations with dual-cure resin cement (DCRC), excess cement can be easily removed by performing tack cure of DCRC for a few seconds. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether different tack cure times affect polymerization shrinkage (PS) of the selected DCRC. One dual-cure resin cement (G-CEM LinkAce, GC) was used for measuring PS in light-cure (LC group), self-cure (SC group), and two tack-cure modes. In the first tack-cure subgroup, tack cure was performed for 1, 2, 3, and 5 seconds, followed by light cure after 2 minutes of remnant removal time in each case (TC-LC groups). In the other tack-cure subgroup, tack cure was performed for the same lengths of time, but followed by self-cure in each case (TC-SC groups). PS was measured by a modified bonded disc method for 1,800 seconds. One-way analysis of variance followed by Duncan's post hoc test was used to determine any statistically significant differences among the test groups (α = 0.05). When the DCRC was self-cured after tack cure, PS was significantly lower than when it was only self-cured (p < 0.05); however, tack cure time did not affect PS (p > 0.05). When the DCRC was light-cured, PS was not affected by tack cure or tack cure time (p > 0.05). Therefore, tack cure within 5 seconds did not negatively affect the final PS when the DCRC was light-cured after cement remnant removal.

  • To study the effect of surface crosslinked layer on the crosslinked poly(sodium acrylate) (cPSA) absorbent, we synthesized several surface crosslinked cPSAs with 5, 10 and 20 g of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) by an inverse emulsion polymerization method to delay the absorption of excess water in concrete. We measured the compressive and flexural strength of mortars having 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 wt% cPSA-EGDMA. We observed the increase of compressive and flexural strength of the cPSA-EGDMA added cement mortars except for the 0.5 wt% cPSA-EGDMA (20 g) added cement mortar. 1.0 wt% cPSA-EGDMA (5 g) added cement mortar showed about 16% and 10% increased compressive and flexural strength than those of plain cement mortar. To study the effect of porosity on compressive and flexural strength, we used FE-SEM and porosimeter. FE-SEM analysis showed swollen cPSMAEGDMA (5 g) filled between calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) crystals. We observed the decreased porosity of the cPSA-EGDMA added cement mortars than that of plain cement mortar. 1.0 wt% cPSA-EGDMA (5 g) cement mortar showed the lowest porosity of 16.5%.

  • Sodium polyacrylate (PAANa) was synthesized by inverse emulsion polymerization method to absorb excess water in concrete. Liquid paraffin was used as a continuous phase. Acrylic acid (AA) was neutralized by aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (8 M). Different amount of N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) was used as a crosslinking agent to change crosslinking density of the synthesized PAANa. The size distribution of synthesized particles was measured by particle size analyzer. Swelling ratio of crosslinked PAANa was evaluated from the equation in D. I. water, cement aqueous solution, and $Ca(OH)_2$ aqueous solution. The FTIR spectroscopy was used to characterize $Ca^{2+}$ ion interaction with PAANa. Incorporation of 1.0 wt% PAANa into cement increased compressive and flexural strength approximately 30% and 10%, respectively, compared with those of ordinary portland cement.

  • The performance of concrete mainly depend upon its water-cement ratio. If water percentage is excess in concrete, it may cause the degradation of performance. Because of these reasons, the change of water content is managed by using various evaluation method of unit water content. And criterion for the change of water content is regulated and used. However the criterion is set only considering production error and measurement error but criterion does not consider performance degradation of concrete. Therefore this study tries to investigate degradation of performance while adding extra water by artificial manipulation or management error in concrete, The contents of extra water for tests are set as 0, 20, 40, 60kg/m3, to examine the performance degradation of concrete, strength, shrinkage, cracks, carbonation are tested This study conclude that, when extra water content is excess than 20kg/m3 in concrete, then performance level of concrete declined rapidly. 80 it is very important to maintain quality of concrete for its better performance.

  • We synthesized microcapsule absorbent with crosslinked poly(styrene-$alt$-maleic anhydride) (PSMA) as a core and PSMA as a shell by a precipitation polymerization method for the delayed absorption of excess water in cement mortar. cPSMA-PSMAs with core-shell structure were synthesized with ratios of 1/1, 1/2 and 1/3 as core monomer mass to shell monomer mass to control shell thickness. We observed the hydrolysis of PSMA in cement-saturated aqueous solution by a FTIR spectrometer. We observed good core-shell structure microcapsules for 1/2(cPSMA #3), but observed incomplete core-shell structure for 1/1(cPSMA #2) and 1/3(cPSMA #4) of core/shell monomer ratios. The swelling ratio of cPSMA #3 in cement-saturated aqueous solution was increased until 20 min. After that it was decreased until 2 hrs swelling time, and they started to increase again. The viscosities of cement paste with cPSMA #3 microcapsules were very slowly increased until 1 hr and increased fast after 1.5 hrs. Cement mortar with 0.5 wt% cPSMA #1 having only core part showed about 5% increase in compressive strength compared to that of plain cement mortar. cPSMA #3 added cement mortar showed the highest compressive strength with 7% increase.

  • This research was attempted as one of a study for investigating optimum contents of fly ash and briquette ash when they were used as admixtures. In mix designs of mortar, fly ash and briquette ash to cement, each of them, was mixed with 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 percent by weight of cement. They were tested for compressive strength, tension strength and bending strength, and these results were summarized as follows; 1. The compressive strength of mortar to add fly ash showed the maximum value at 25 percent. tension strength, 20 percent, bending strength, 15 percent. 2. In case of using briquette ash, compressive strength showed maximum strength at 15 percent. tension strength, 20 percent, bending strength, 20 percent. 3. To add fly ash showed in general more additive effect than to add briquette ash. 4. It was not only to excess standard strength but may be to develop as admixture when briquette ash was used around 20 percent.

  • In this study, the effects of blast furnance slag cement and frost-resistant accelerator on shrinkage properties and shrinkage properties of mortar were examined. As a result, the addition of the frost-resistant accelerator to both OPC and BB has a small effect on the flash properties of mortar and the compressive strength increases from the early ages. In addition, when a frost-resistant accelerator is used in excess of the standard usage amount, it is necessary to examine the relationship of the expansion behavior at the early age, especially, between the compressive strength development and the expansion property. And it was confirmed that the addition of the frost-resistant accelerator tended to increase the shrinkage of mortar using the OPC and BB. With the addition of the frost-resistant accelerator, the amount of pores with a diameter of under the 30nm, especially, the amount of pores with a diameter of 20 to 30nm and the amount of pores with an ink-bottle decrease, and the shrinkage increases. And it is considered that a change in the amount this range of pores has a large effect on the shrinkage property.

  • Although the water mixed into the concrete plays the role of hydration and acquiring the necessary workability, the more portion of water acts to obtain the substantial workability rather than to complete the hydration. However, the excess amount of water causes the poor quality of concrete, therefore it is useful to add the minimum amount of water as required as to acquire the proper workability. There have been the considerable numbers of investigations in which the dispersion phenomena of strong eletrolytic high polymer compounds such as lignosulfate and some of surface activation agents were studied to utilize as the dispersion agent of concrete. In the present study, Na-lignate, dispersion properties of which has not been studied yet, were investigated with the purpose of utilizing as a dispersion agent of concrete. The microscopic observations showed a great improvement in the dispersion of cement particles, also the fluidity and compressive strength of concrete were remarkably increased with the addition of Na-lignate: The addition of Na-lignate by 0.02% showed the increase of 1.76 times and 1.27 times of slump value and flow value respectively, and the compressive strength was increased by 1.07 times.

  • Hydraulic structures have been constructed with low cost concrete so as to increase the investment efficiency. But, it has caused to produce structures having excess internal voids inside concrete. As the construction of agricultural irrigation and drainage project is concentrated on off-farming season and scattered in wider area, variation of quality of structures is big and it caused increase of internal voids. Due to that reason, hazardous substance is passing rather freely through the voids causing occur of crack and accordingly life time of structures is getting shortened. It is necessary to make a thesis of design criteria for design strength to increase life time, range of variation of quality, strength of ready-mixed concrete proper to design strength, and water-cement ratio and air content.
