An Optimal Control of Container Crane Using Evolution Strategy (진화전략을 이용한 컨테이너 크레인의 최적제어에 관한 연구)

  • During the operation of crane system in container yard, the objective is to transport the load to a goal position as quick as possible without rope oscillation. The container crane is generally operated by an expert operator, but recently an automatic control system with high speed and rapid transportation is required. Therefore, we developed an optimal controller which has to control the crane system with disturbances. In this paper, we present a design of optima 2-DOF PID controller for the control of gantry crane which has to control swing motion and trolley position. We used evolution strategy(ES) to tune the parameters of 2-DOF PID controller. It was compared with general PID controller. The computer simulations show that the proposed method has better performances than the other method.

Proof-of-principle Experimental Study of the CMA-ES Phase-control Algorithm Implemented in a Multichannel Coherent-beam-combining System (다채널 결맞음 빔결합 시스템에서 CMA-ES 위상 제어 알고리즘 구현에 관한 원리증명 실험적 연구)

  • In this study, the feasibility of using the covariance-matrix-adaptation-evolution-strategy (CMA-ES) algorithm in a multichannel coherent-beam-combining (CBC) system was experimentally verified. We constructed a multichannel CBC system utilizing a spatial light modulator (SLM) as a multichannel phase-modulator array, along with a coherent light source at 635 nm, implemented the stochastic-parallel-gradient-descent (SPGD) and CMA-ES algorithms on it, and compared their performances. In particular, we evaluated the characteristics of the CMA-ES and SPGD algorithms in the CBC system in both 16-channel rectangular and 19-channel honeycomb formats. The results of the evaluation showed that the performances of the two algorithms were similar on average, under the given conditions; However, it was verified that under the given conditions the CMA-ES algorithm was able to operate with more stable performance than the SPGD algorithm, as the former had less operational variation with the initial phase setting than the latter. It is emphasized that this study is the first proof-of-principle demonstration of the CMA-ES phase-control algorithm in a multichannel CBC system, to the best of our knowledge, and is expected to be useful for future experimental studies of the effects of additional channel-number increments, or external-phase-noise effects, in multichannel CBC systems based on the CMA-ES phase-control algorithm.

  • In this paper, the inverter spot welding system with high efficiency via an instantaneous power control is presented. In spot welding, instantaneous power control is utilized in order to attain less spatter and high welding performance. Also we proposed a PI controller for spot welder system using Evolution Strategy(ES) with varying search space. ES with varying search space which depends on fitness values at each generation is used to tune PI control parameters

Hybrid CMA-ES/SPGD Algorithm for Phase Control of a Coherent Beam Combining System and its Performance Analysis by Numerical Simulations (CMA-ES/SPGD 이중 알고리즘을 통한 결맞음 빔 결합 시스템 위상제어 및 동작성능에 대한 전산모사 분석)

  • In this study, we propose a hybrid phase-control algorithm for multi-channel coherent beam combining (CBC) system by combining the covariant matrix adaption evolution strategy (CMA-ES) and stochastic parallel gradient descent (SPGD) algorithms and analyze its operational performance. The proposed hybrid CMA-ES/SPGD algorithm is a sequential process which initially runs the CMA-ES algorithm until the combined final output intensity reaches a preset interim value, and then switches to running the SPGD algorithm to the end of the whole process. For ideal 7-channel and 19-channel all-fiber-based CBC systems, we have found that the mean convergence time can be reduced by about 10% in comparison with the case when the SPGD algorithm is implemented alone. Furthermore, we analyzed a more realistic situation in which some additional phase noise was introduced in the same CBC system. As a result, it is shown that the proposed algorithm reduces the mean convergence time by about 17% for a 7-channel CBC system and 16-27% for a 19-channel system compared to the existing SPGD alone algorithm. We expect that for implementing a CBC system in a real outdoor environment where phase noise cannot be ignored, the hybrid CMA-ES/SPGD algorithm proposed in this study will be exploited very usefully.

  • In this paper, the application of fuzzy decision to optimization of induction motor design is proposed. This method can reflect the designer's experience, view, and judgment, but also can be applied to multi-objective optimization design easily. The electromagnetic performance of the induction motor are calculated by means of the equivalent magnetic circuit method. The design method is The $D^2L$ method which is combined with fuzzy decision and optimization algorithm. As the optimization algorithm, the evolution strategy(ES) is applied. The proposed algorithm is applied to a multiobjective optimization of an induction motor design where the motor should have less weight and, at the same time, have higher efficiency and power factor at rated operating points.

  • In this paper, the optimal design rrethod of the electropermanent magnetic lifter is proposed. The electromag-netic performances at the states of attraction and release are calculated by the means of the equivalent magnetic circuit rrethod. The magnetic flux flow, the magneto-rrntive force and the aJronnt of lifting force correspond to the electromagnetic performances. As the optimization algorithm, the evolution strategy(ES) is applied for the maximization of the electromagnetic force at the state of attraction and for the minimization of the volume within the alJowable electomagnetic force range.[3] At this rrnrrent, the optimization satisfy the minimization of the electromagnetic force at the state of release. The validity of the proposed optimization rrethod is verified by the comparison between the optimization result and the FEM result (this FEM result is obtained from MAXWELL).

  • This paper presents the application of Adaptive Evolutionary Algorithm (AEA) to search an optimal setting of overcurrent relay coordination to protect ring distribution systems. The AEA takes the merits of both a genetic algorithm (GA) and an evolution strategy (ES) in an adaptive manner to use the global search capability of GA and the local search capability of ES. The overcurrent relay settings and coordination requirements are formulated into a set of constraint equations and an objective function is developed to manage the overcurrent relay settings by the Time Coordination Method. The domain of overcurrent relays coordination for the ring-fed distribution systems is a non-linear system with a lot of local optimum points and a highly constrained optimization problem. Thus conventional methods fail in searching for the global optimum. AEA is employed to search for the optimum relay settings with maximum satisfaction of coordination constraints. The simulation results show that the proposed method can optimize the overcurrent relay settings, reduce relay mis-coordinated operations, and find better optimal overcurrent relay settings than the present available methods.

A Parallel Adaptive Evolutionary Algorithm for Thermal Unit Commitment (병렬 적응 진화알고리즘을 이용한 발전기 기동정지계획에 관한 연구)

  • This paper is presented by the application of parallel adaptive evolutionary algorithm(PAEA) to search an optimal solution of a thermal unit commitment problem. The adaptive evolutionary algorithm(AEA) takes the merits of both a genetic algorithm(GA) and an evolution strategy(ES) in an adaptive manner to use the global search capability of GA and the local search capability of ES. To reduce the execution time of AEA, the developed algorithm is implemented on an parallel computer which is composed of 16 processors. To handle the constraints efficiently and to apply to Parallel adaptive evolutionary algorithm(PAEA), the states of thermal unit are represented by means of real-valued strings that display continuous terms of on/off state of generating units and are involved in their minimum up and down time constraints. And the violation of other constraints are handled by repairing operator. The procedure is applied to the $10{\sim}100$ thermal unit systems, and the results show capabilities of the PAEA.

  • In real system application, the 3-D obstacle avoidance system for the autonomous control of the underwater flight vehicle (UFV) operates with the following problems: the sonar offers the range/bearing information of obstacles in a local detection area, it requires the system that has reduced acoustic noise and power consumption in terms of the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), it has the UFV operation constraints such as maximum pitch and depth, and it requires an easy design procedure in terms of its structures and parameters. To solve these problems, an intelligent 3-D obstacle avoidance algorithm using the evolution strategy (ES) and the fuzzy logic controller (FLC), is proposed. To verify the performance of the proposed algorithm, the 3-D obstacle avoidance of UFV is performed. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm effectively solves the problems in the real system application.
