  • During process design or process optimization, it is quite common for experimenters to find optimum operating conditions for several responses simultaneously. The traditional multiresponse surfaces optimization methods do not consider the uncertain relationship among these responses sufficiently. For this reason, the authors propose an optimization method based on evidential reasoning theory by Dempster and Shafer. By maximizing the basic probability assignment function, which indicates the degree of belief that certain operating condition is the solution of this multiresponse surfaces optimization problem, the desirable operating condition can be found.

  • A robust and reliable learning and reasoning mechanism is addressed based upon fuzzy set theory and fuzzy associative memories. The mechanism stores a priori an initial knowledge base via approximate learning and utilizes this information for decision-making systems via fuzzy inferencing. We called this fuzzy computer architecture a 'fuzzy hypercube' processing all the rules in one clock period in parallel. Fuzzy hypercubes can be applied to control of a class of complex and highly nonlinear systems which suffer from vagueness uncertainty. Moreover, evidential aspects of a fuzzy hypercube are treated to assess the degree of certainty or reliability together with parameter sensitivity.

  • An improved filter for tracking a maneuvering target is presented. The proposed filter consists of two kalman filters based on different dynamic models and double decision logic. The use of double decision logic for the maneuver onset and ending detection leads to reduction in estimation error. This decision rule is based on evidence theory, Dempster-Shafer theory, which is extended in order to be applicable in the tracking problem. Simulation results show that the proposed filter performs better than IMM at a lower computational load.

  • In this paper, a conceptual framework of a new concept of protectability is proposed, which indicates the protection level of the system. Evaluation attributes have been identified and a hierarchical evaluation model has been established. Dempster-Shafer Theory of Evidence is applied in combining multiple uncertain judgements to produce an aggregated evaluation.

  • In this study, a retrieval system taking advantage of term relationship in a specific domain and also of evidential reasoning as tools for measuring relevance is implemented. For this experiment, techincal memoranda documented in Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) served as a sample document file. Sample knowledge base was prepared by extracting terms and term relations pertaining to telecommunications from INSPEC thesaurus. Relations between terms were represented by numerical values according to types of term relations. Relationship between a query and a document was measured according to Dempster-Shafer theory of evidence. As a result of this experiment, a more comprehensive search was made by expanding search terms utilizing term relations. Measure of relevance represented by reflecting term relations, and search results were listed in a descending order of relevance.
