The Characteristics Study of Vehicle Evaporative Emission and Performance according to the Bio-Fuel Application (바이오 연료 적용에 따른 차량 증발가스 및 성능특성 연구)

  • As the interest on the air-pollution is gradually rising up at home and abroad, automotiv e and fuel researchers have been working on the exhaust emission reduction from vehicles through a lot of approaches, which consist of new engine design, innovative after-treatment systems, using clean (eco-friendly alternative) fuels and fuel quality improvement. This research has brought forward three main issues : evaporative, performance, air pollution. In addition, researcher studied the environment problems of the bio-ethanol, bio-butanol, bio-ETBE (Ethyl Tertiary Butyl Ether), MTBE (Methyl Tert iary Butyl Ether) fuel contained in the fuel as octane number improver. The researchers have many dat a about the health effects of ingestion of octane number improver. However, the data support the con clusion that octane number improver is a potential human carcinogen at high doses. Based on the bio-fuel and octane number improver types (bio-ethanol, bio-butanol, bio-ETBE, MTBE), this paper dis cussed the influence of gasoline fuel properties on the evaporative emission characteristics. Also, this p aper assessed the acceleration and power performance of gasoline vehicle for the bio-fuel property. As a result of the experiment, it was found that all the test fuels meet the domestic exhaust gas standards, and as a result of measurement of the vapor pressure of the test fuels, the bio - ethanol : 15 kPa and the biobutanol : 1.6 kPa. thus when manufacturing E3 fuel, Increasing the biobutanol content reduces evaporation gas and vapor pressure. In addition, Similar accelerating and powering performance was shown for the type of biofuel and when bio-butanol and bio-ethanol were compared accelerated perf ormance was improved by about 3.9% and vehicle power by 0.8%.

Evaluation of near-realtime weekly root-zone Soil Moisture Index (SMI) for the extreme climate monitoring web-service across East Asia (동아시아 이상기후 감시 서비스를 위한 지면모형 기반 준실시간 토양수분지수평가)

  • An extreme climate monitoring is essential to the reduction of socioeconomic damages from extreme events. The objective of this study was to produce the near-realtime weekly root-zone Soil Moisture Index (SMI) on the basis of soil moisture using the Noah 3.3 Land Surface Model (LSM) for potentially monitoring extreme drought events. The Yangtze basin was selected to evaluate the Noah LSM performance for the East Asia region (15-60°N, 70-150°E) and the evapotranspiration (ET) and sensible heat flux (SH) were compared with ET and SH from FluxNet and with ET from FluxCom, Global Land Evaporation Amsterdam Model (GLEAM), ERA-5, and Generalized Complementary Relationship (GCR). For the ET, the coefficients of determination (R2) were higher than 0.96, while the R2 value for the SH was 0.71 with slightly lower than those. A time series of the weekly root-zone SMI revealed that the regions with Extreme drought had been expanded from the northern part of East China to the entire East China between July to October 2019. The trend analysis of the number of extreme drought events showed that extreme drought events in spring had reduced in South Korea over the past 20 years, while those in fall had a tendency to increase. It is concluded that this study can be useful to reduce the socioeconomic damages resulted from climate extremes by comprehensively characterizing extreme drought events.

Numerical Analysis of Coupled Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical (THM) Behavior at Korean Reference Disposal System (KRS) Using TOUGH2-MP/FLAC3D Simulator (TOUGH2-MP/FLAC3D를 이용한 한국형 기준 처분시스템에서의 열-수리-역학적 복합거동 특성 평가)

  • For design and performance assessment of a high-level radioactive waste (HLW) disposal system, it is necessary to understand the characteristics of coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) behavior. However, in previous studies for the Korean Reference HLW Disposal System (KRS), thermal analysis was performed to determine the spacing of disposal tunnels and interval of disposition holes without consideration of the coupled THM behavior. Therefore, in this study, TOUGH2-MP/FLAC3D is used to conduct THM modeling for performance assessment of the Korean Reference HLW Disposal System (KRS). The peak temperature remains below the temperature limit of $100^{\circ}C$ for the whole period. A rapid rise of temperature caused by decay heat occurs in the early years, and then temperature begins to decrease as decay heat from the waste decreases. The peak temperature at the bentonite buffer is around $96.2^{\circ}C$ after about 3 years, and peak temperature at the rockmass is $68.2^{\circ}C$ after about 17 years. Saturation of the bentonite block near the canister decreases in the early stage, because water evaporation occurs owing to temperature increase. Then, saturation of the bentonite buffer and backfill increases because of water intake from the rockmass, and bentonite buffer and backfill are fully saturated after about 266 years. The stress is calculated to investigate the effect of thermal stress and swelling pressure on the mechanical behavior of the rockmass. The calculated stress is compared to a spalling criterion and the Mohr-Coulumb criterion for investigation of potential failure. The stress at the rockmass remains below the spalling strength and Mohr-Coulumb criterion for the whole period. The methodology of using the TOUGH2-MP/FLAC3D simulator can be applied to predict the long-term behavior of the KRS under various conditions; these methods will be useful for the design and performance assessment of alternative concepts such as multi-layer and multi-canister concepts for geological spent fuel repositories.

  • Fine-size exposed aggregate portland cement concrete pavements (FEACP) have surface texture of exposed aggregate by removing upper 2$\sim$3mm mortar of surface of which curing is delayed by using delay-setting agent. FEACPs have advantages of maintaining low-noise and adequate skid-resistance level during the performance period than general portland cement concrete pavements. It is necessary to ensure the durability environmental loading to prevent unexpected distress during the service life of FEACP. In the process of curing, volume change accompanied change in by moisture and temperature could be an important cause of crack in concrete to construct for successful FEACP, The use of chloride containing deicer may accelerate defects of concrete pavement, such as crack and scaling. This study aim to evaluate environmental loading resistance of FEACP, based on the estimation of shrinkage-crack-control-capability by moisture evaporation and scaling by deicer in freeze-thaw reaction.

Autogenous Shrinkage of Very-Early Strength Latex-Modified Concrete with Retarder Contents (지연제 함량 변화에 따른 초속경 라텍스개질 콘크리트(VES-LMC)의 자기수축)

  • The autogenous shrinkage of high-performance concrete, including very-early strength latex-modified concrete(VES-LMC), is generally bigger than that of normal strength concrete because of the low water/cement ratio, high binder contents, and usage of superplasticizer. Mix. proportion of VES-LMC has low water/cement ratio(0.38), high cement content(390kg/m$^3$), and aid of latex(15% of cement weight). Thus, these factors of VES-LMC, rapid water self-dissipation and evaporation within 3 hours of concrete placement would increase the autogenous shrinkage. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the early-age shrinkage, thermal deformation and autogenous shrinkages of VES-LMC with retarder contents(retarder solids-cement ratio, by weight) using to secure working time in field. The experimental results showed that retarder contents do not affect of the maximum hydration temperature. Early-age expansion of VES-LMC was mostly caused by thermal expansion and partly by autogenous expansion. The autogenous shrinkage is decreased by increasing the retarder contents within this study. On the other hand, the usage of retarder should be decided carefully considering the field conditions because an excessive usage of retarder can cause handful early-age expansion.

  • 18~19 wt% $KMnO_4$/$SiO_2-Al_2O_3$ with Si/Al = 1/5 and 1/10, and 20 wt% $KMnO_4$/$Al_2O_3$ were prepared by solvent evaporation method. Catalytic activity of ethylene abatement over those samples were evaluated and compared under the conditions of GHSV $1125h^{-1}$, ethylene gas (ethylene 0.2%, air 99.8%, relative humidity 50%) at 30, 40, 60 and $120^{\circ}C$ using a fixed-bed reactor. $KMnO_4$/$SiO_2-Al_2O_3$ was showed better performance than $KMnO_4$/$Al_2O_3$ by 170~210% at 30, $40^{\circ}C$, and by 60% at 60, $150^{\circ}C$, respectively.

HEAT PIPE TYPE EXHAUST HEAT RECOVERY SYSTEM FOR HOT AIR HEATER

  • Area of greenhouse increases rapidly up to 45,265ha by the year of 1998 in Korea. Hot air heater with light oil combustion is the most common heater for greenhouse heating in the winter season. However, exhaust gas heat discharged to atmosphere through chimney reaches up to 10~20% of total heat of the oil combusted in the furnace. In order to recapture the heat of this exhaust gas and to recycle for greenhouse heating, the heat pipe type exhaust heat recovery system was manufactured and tested in this experiment. The exhaust heat recovery system was made for space heating in the greenhouse. The system consisted of a heat exchanger made of heat pipes, ${\emptyset}15.88{\times}600mm$ located in the rectangular box of $600{\times}550{\times}330mm$, a blower and air ducts. The rectangular box was divided by two compartments where hot chamber exposed to exhaust gas in which heat pipes could pick up the heat of exhaust gas, and by evaporation of the heat transfer medium in the pipes it carries the heat to the cold compartment, then the blower moves the heat to greenhouse. The number of heat pipe was 60, calculated considering the heat exchange amount between flue gas and heat transfer capacity of heat pipe. The working fluid of heat pipe was acetone because acetone is known for its excellent heat transfer capacity. The system was attached to the exhaust gas path. According to the performance test it could recover 53,809 to 74,613kJ/hr depending on the inlet air temperature of 12 to $-12^{circ}C$ respectively when air flow rate $1,100\textrm{m}^3/hr$. The exhaust gas temperature left the heat exchanger dropped to $100^{circ}C$ from $270^{circ}C$ by the heat exchange between the air and the flue gas, the temperature difference was collected by the air and the warm air temperature was about $60^{circ}C$ at the air flow rate of $1,100\textrm{m}^3/hr$. This heat pipe type exhaust heat recovery system can reduce fuel cost by 10% annually according to the economic analysis.

  • To evaluate the performance of cadmium sulfide as a multi-function X-ray dosimeter, we made an X-ray detector that was based on cadmium sulfide using evaporation technology, and measured its response to X-ray exposure. The voltages of cadmium sulfide were measured on the various X-ray tube potentials, X-ray tube currents and exposure times. The regression analysis of the voltage response of CdS on the tube-potential variation was y=0.0995x-0.1146 ($R^2$=0.9595, $\sigma$=0.08, standard error=2%) and the regression analysis of the voltage response of CdS on the tube-potential variation was y=0.0439x+1.1891 ($R^2$=0.9021, $\sigma$=0.04, standard error=1.8%) The regression analysis of the voltage response of CdS on the X-ray exposure time variation was y=8.2853+5.5878 ($R^2$=0.7287, $\sigma$=0.06, standard error=1.9%). In conclusion, cadmium sulfide responded linearly to the variation X-ray conditions, suggesting cadmium sulfide to be a feasible X-ray sensor of multi-function dosimeter related instruments.

A Study on the RDF making Process of Heat-dried Sludge from Cheonan by using Oil-drying Method (유중건조를 이용한 천안시 열건조물의 고형연료화 공정 연구)

  • This study examined the optimal manufacturing conditions of RDF using heat-dried sludge from sewage treatment plant in Cheonan with the oil-drying method. The amounts of oil evaporation and oil drying of the heat-dried sludge were measured at different temperatures to evaluate the value of the product. The performance of the product was then measured using a calorimeter and TGA. In addition, the concentration of odor, NH3, H2S, and TVOC during drying was determined using a portable odor-meter. Ingredient analysis was performed by EDS. Considering mass-production, the oil to heat-dried sludge weight ratio was fixed to 4:1. At $130^{\circ}C$, only physical mixing occurred after the instantaneous drying of internal water. Considering the eco-friendly aspects, there was no significant difference in the drying efficiency between $160^{\circ}C$ and $190^{\circ}C$. Therefore, the optimal conditions were a drying temperature of $160^{\circ}C$ within 5 minutes. Finally, the RDF manufactured in this study and fuel used in the thermal power plants were compared. The calorific value was 4,449kcal/kg, the water content was 2% and the ash content was 34%, which is higher than the fuel of thermal power plants. Therefore, it is believed that coal energy as well as wood pellets can be replaced.

A study on the RDF(Refuse Derived Fuel) making process of Livestock manure sludge by oil-drying method (유중건조를 이용한 축산분뇨슬러지의 고형연료화 공정 연구)

  • In this study, we found the optimal manufacturing conditions of livestock manure sludge RDF with the oil-drying method. We performed oil evaporation, oil drying and pelletizing of the sludge to evaluate the value of the product (sludge RDF), and measured the performance of the product using calorimeter and PXRF equipment. Also, we conducted the calorie comparison test between sludge RDF manufactured in this study and wood RDF generally used in the field. Experimental results showed that 30g of the sludge treated by vegetable oil at $130^{\circ}C$ for 25 minutes were the optimal conditions to make the sludge RDF (considering the aspects of eco-friendly and mass production). The caloric value of the sludge RDF manufactured in this study was 5211kcal/kg which is higher than that of wood RDF used widely in the market. Finally, PXRF results showed sludge RDF contains no heavy metals with the exception of sulfur. Therefore, we recommend more study about the sulfur control process for future development of the industrial manufacturing process.
