  • The present research intends to study the effects of the seismic soil-foundation-structure interaction (SFSI) on the dynamic response of various buildings. Two methods including direct and Cone model were studied through 3D finite element method using ABAQUS software. Cone model as an approximate method to consider the SFSI phenomenon was developed and evaluated for both high and low rise buildings. Effect of soil nonlinearity, foundation rigidity and embedment as well as friction coefficient between soil-foundation interfaces during seismic excitation are investigated. Validity and performance of both approaches are evaluated as reference graphs for Cone model and infinite boundary condition, soil nonlinearity and amplification factor for direct method. A series of calculations by DeepSoil for inverse earthquake record modification was conducted. A comparison of the two methods was carried out by root-mean-square-deviation (RMSD) tool for maximum lateral displacement and story shear forces which verifies that Cone model results have good agreement with direct method. It was concluded that Cone method is a convenient, fast and rather accurate method as an approximate way to count for soil media.

  • With the growing demand for metallic dampers in engineering practice, it is urgent to establish a reasonable approach to evaluating the mechanical performance of metallic dampers under seismic excitations. This paper introduces an effective method for parameter identification of the modified Bouc-Wen model and its application to evaluating the fatigue performance of metallic dampers (MDs). The modified Bouc-Wen model which eliminates the redundant parameter is used to describe the hysteresis behavior of MDs. Relations between the parameters of the modified Bouc-Wen model and the mechanical performance parameters of MDs are studied first. A modified Genetic Algorithm using real-integer hybrid coding with relative fitness as well as adaptive crossover and mutation rates (called RFAGA) is then proposed to identify the parameters of the modified Bouc-Wen model. A reliable approach to evaluating the fatigue performance of the MDs with respect to the Chinese Code for Seismic Design of Buildings (GB 50011-2010) is finally proposed based on the research results. Experimental data are employed to demonstrate the process and verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach. It is shown that the RFAGA is able to converge quickly in the identification process, and the simulation curves based on the identification results fit well with the experimental hysteresis curves. Furthermore, the proposed approach is shown to be a useful tool for evaluating the fatigue performance of MDs with respect to the Chinese Code for Seismic Design of Buildings (GB 50011-2010).

  • Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model have been widely used in simulating hydrology and water quality analysis at watershed scale. The SWAT model extracts topographic feature using the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) for hydrology and pollutant generation and transportation within watershed. Use of various DEM cell size in the SWAT leads to different results in extracting topographic feature for each subwatershed. So, it is recommended that model users use very detailed spatial resolution DEM for accurate hydrology analysis and water quality simulation. However, use of high resolution DEM is sometimes difficult to obtain and not efficient because of computer processing capacity and model execution time. Thus, the SWAT Topographic Feature Extraction Error (STOPFEE) Fix module, which can extract topographic feature of high resolution DEM from low resolution and updates SWAT topographic feature automatically, was developed and evaluated in this study. The analysis of average slope vs. DEM cell size revealed that average slope of watershed increases with decrease in DEM cell size, finer resolution of DEM. This falsification of topographic feature with low resolution DEM affects soil erosion and sediment behaviors in the watershed. The annual average sediment for Soyanggang-dam watershed with DEM cell size of 20 m was compared with DEM cell size of 100 m. There was 83.8% difference in simulated sediment without STOPFEE module and 4.4% difference with STOPFEE module applied although the same model input data were used in SWAT run. For Imha-dam watershed, there was 43.4% differences without STOPFEE module and 0.3% difference with STOPFEE module. Thus, the STOPFEE topographic database for Soyanggang-dam watershed was applied for Chungju-dam watershed because its topographic features are similar to Soyanggang-dam watershed. Without the STOPFEE module, there was 98.7% difference in simulated sediment for Chungju-dam watershed for DEM cell size of both 20 m and 100 m. However there was 20.7% difference in simulated sediment with STOPFEE topographic database for Soyanggang-dam watershed. The application results of STOPFEE for three watersheds showed that the STOPFEE module developed in this study is an effective tool to extract topographic feature of high resolution DEM from low resolution DEM. With the STOPFEE module, low-capacity computer can be also used for accurate hydrology and sediment modeling for bigger size watershed with the SWAT. It is deemed that the STOPFEE module database needs to be extended for various watersheds in Korea for wide application and accurate SWAT runs with lower resolution DEM.

  • The quality of water released from a stratified reservoir is dependent on various factors such as the location and shape of intake facility, structure of reservoir stratification, profile of water quality constituent, and withdrawal flux. Sometimes, selective withdrawal capabilities can provide the operational flexibility to meet the water quality demands both in-reservoir and downstream. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of a one-dimensional reservoir selective withdrawal model (SELECT) as a tool for supporting downstream water quality management for Daecheong and Imha reservoirs. The simulated water quality variables including water temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), conductivity, turbidity were compared with the field data measured in tailwater. The model showed fairly satisfactory results and high reliability in simulating observations. The coefficients of determinant between simulated and observed turbidity values were 0.93 and 0.95 for Daecheong and Imha reservoirs, respectively. The outflow water quality was significantly influenced by water intake level under fully stratified condition, while the effect of intake amount was minor. In conclusion, the SELECT is simple but effective tool for supporting downstream water quality prediction and management for both reservoirs.

  • The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model users tend to use the readily available input dataset, such as the Ministry of Environment (MOE) land cover data ignoring temporal and spatial changes in land cover. The SWAT model was calibrated and validated with this land cover data. The EI values were 0.79 and 0.85 for streamflow calibration and validation, respectively. The EI were 0.79 and 0.86 for sediment calibration and validation, respectively. With newly prepared landcover dataset for the Doam-dam watershed, the SWAT model better predicts hydrologic and sediment behaviors. The number of HRUs with new land cover data increased by 70.2% compared with that with the MOE land cover, indicating better representation of small-sized agricultural field boundaries. The SWAT estimated annual average sediment yield with the MOE land cover data was 61.8 ton/ha/year for the Doam-dam watershed, while 36.2 ton/ha/year (70.7% difference) of annual sediment yield with new land cover data. Especially the most significant difference in estimated sediment yield was 548.0% for the subwatershed #2. Therefore it is recommended that one needs to carefully validate land cover for the study watershed for accurate hydrologic and sediment simulation with the SWAT model.

  • With the recent introduction of 5G, electromagnetic radiation sources are spreading throughout life, so it is necessary to establish a citizen-centered electromagnetic safety management system. In particular, the beamforming method of the 5G antenna increases the power density measurement of electromagnetic waves by more than 10 times when the wireless base station is installed, so it is unreasonable to determine the safety by physical measurement. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the presence or absence of electromagnetic wave safety in daily life through a predictive method by calculation through systematic model analysis. In this paper, in order to check the possibility of a 5G wireless base station using an electromagnetic wave numerical analysis tool as a way to solve this problem, we compared the measured values of the actual base stations and the predicted values through the prediction model to compare the reliability. A method of constructing a real-time base station electromagnetic wave strength prediction evaluation system combined with software was also proposed.

  • Objective & Background: When applying various evaluation tools that analyze work posture risk through observation, accurate measurement of body flexion angle is very important. Method: This study investigated differences and appropriateness of 5 different existing reference points commonly used in the analysis of the work posture. Twenty five ergonomist and trained professionals were participated in this study. A Same flexion angle was utilized for the evaluation of risk assessment of musculoskeletal disorders using five different reference points to investigate the degree of difference between them. To investigate how different the observers' preferred flexion angle measuring methods were compared to the ISO 11226 Reference Posture, a virtual body model was constructed using the Poser 6.0 program. Six types of body flexion postures were constructed, and since neck flexion differs according to body angle, five types of neck flexion postures were constructed with the trunk bending $20^{\circ}$ forward, making up a total of 30 virtual flexion postures. Results: Results showed that the observers used personally preferred reference points instead of reference points recommend in the evaluation tools. Also the results revealed the their seems to be 6 types of flexion angle for the trunk and 11 types of measurement methods for the neck flexion angle in the form of personally preferred reference points. The results showed that a mean difference of $14^{\circ}$($4{\sim}23^{\circ}$) occurred in the trunk, and a mean difference of $20^{\circ}$($-8{\sim}51^{\circ}$) occurred in the neck. To increase accuracy when using the 5 evaluation tools in combination, the ISO 11226 standards, observers' preferred flexion posture standards, and common flexion posture standards of the evaluation tools were compared with the reference points of the 5 evaluation tools. Results showed considerable variance in angle difference for each evaluation tool. Conclusion: According to the results of this study, considering the angle difference between the flexion angle reference points of the evaluation tool and the reference points selected by the observers, it is concluded that instead of personally preferred reference points, the standardized reference points to enhance the accuracy and the objectivity. Application: The result of this study can be used as reference guide to develop the standardized reference point in the future.

  • Virtual colonoscopy is one of the Powerful tool for non-invasive colon examination and many in-vitro and in-vivo studies have shown its accuracy in Polyp or adenoma detection. But most of virtual colonoscopy requires high quality workstation and software and its cost is high to setup whole system. We developed PC-based 3D model creation and navigation program which has diverse functions. It can be easily installed to PC and connected to network system. The performance. when used as a virtual colonoscopy. is evaluated by calculating sensitivity of detection for the simulated polyp which is artificially made inside the Pig's colon and checked its clinical feasibility, Its total sensitivity is 76%. Grouping according to Polyps diameter, the sensitivity for detection of polyps 10 ㎜ or larger was 100%(40 of 40); 5.0-9.9 ㎜, 90.0(90 of 100): and smaller then 5 ㎜. 36.7%(22 of 60).
