  • The first occurrence of a giant squid, Architeuthis sp. (one specimen), and the oarfish, Regalecus russellii (two specimens) in the East Sea were reported based on specimens collected in January and February 2010. The giant squid (Architeuthis sp.) stranded at Pohang in Jan. 2010 was female, 175 cm in mantle length (ML), 506 cm in tentacle length (TL), and 33.9% FL/ML, it contained common squid beaks. Both stranded oarfish (Regalecus russellii) at Uljin (Jan. 2010) and Yeongdeok (Feb. 2010) were male, with total weigths (TW) of 18,506 and 21,703 g and total lengths (TL) of 3,850 and 3,670 mm, respectively. The stomach of the first was empty, while that of the second was filled with euphausiids. In the East Sea, giant squid have been stranded 14 times in five areas, while 17 oarfish have been stranded in nine areas. Since 1990, the two species have been found most often at Pohang.

  • In order to the species composition and abundance distribution of zooplankton, quantitative samples collected in the Yellow Sea in April 1981 were analyzed. Ranges of temperatures and salinities of the study area were 4.55-9.80$^{\circ}C$ and 32.02-32.88 , respectively. Total 33 taxa were identified from all samples collected. Species composition along the stations showed no remarkable variations. Copepods were the most imporatnt components of zooplankton community in the study area. Dominant species of copepods were Oithona similis, Acartia clause and Centropages mcmurrichi. Appendicularia, Chaetognatha, Amphipod, and Euphausiid were distributed with minor abundance. Average biomass(wet weight) of zooplankton was 107mg/㎥, and the biomasses of zooplankton at offshore stations were greater than those of inshore stations in the study area. Average individual number of zooplankton was 1,915 indiv./㎥, and the variations along stations showed the same trend as in biomass. From the result of clustering with correlation coefficients calculated with the indivecual numbers per cubic meter for 20 zooplankton constituents at each station it was suggested that temperature had far reaching sffect on the distribution of zooplankton in the study area.

  • Biological and chemical characteristics and trophodynamics in the frontal zone were investigated in the southern waters of Korea, Temperature, nutrients (dissolved inorganic nitrogen, $PO_4^{3-}-P$, and $SiO_2^{-}-Si$) chlorophyll a and zooplankton were collected and analyzed along the two transects, the frontal zone and the non-frontal zone, in April, 1994. Nutrients were higher in the non-frontal zone than in the frontal zone. But chlorophyll a concentration was high in the frontal zone, particularly at the 20 m depth of the main frontal station (St. TII-2), where was located at the junction between the stratified layer and the non-stratified layer with the lowest nutrients. Zooplankton was more abundant in the frontal zone than in the non-frontal zone, particularly at the innermost station of the frontal zone. Copepods showed high composition rate more than $90\%$ at all stations except the main frontal station (St. TII-2). At the main frontal station (St. TII-2), euphausiids and siphonophores were dominated. Chlorophyll a revealed a significant relationships with $SiO_2^{-}-Si$ in both transects and copepods in the non-frontal zone. Copepods also showed very close relationship with siphonophores in the frontal zone. This suggests that the abundance of copepods could be controlled as bottom-up in the non-frontal zone and as top-down in the frontal zone.
