  • Morphological characteristics of the Eucommia barks produced in Korea and China and of the barks of Euonymus japonicus $T_{HUMBERGI}$ in Korea and Euonymus pellucidifolia $H_{AGATA}$ in Taiwan were compared. The similarity in morphological features between Eucommiae Cortex produced in Korea and that of China suggests that both plants are of same botanical origin. However, the size of tissues and cells indicates that there is only one difference due to warm climatic environment. The similarity and difference of the barks of Euonymus japonicus produced in Korea and Euonymus pellucidifolia produced in Taiwan comfirmed that the two plants belong to the same genus and that they are different species.

실내 관상용 물재배에서 염분농도에 따른 3가지 관엽식물의 내염성 평가 (Evaluation of Salt Tolerance of Three Foliage Plant as affected by Salinity Concentration in Indoor Ornamental Hydroculture)

  • This study investigated the growth characteristics of Euonymus japonicus, Hedera helix, and Peperomia puteolata treated with different calcium chloride (CaCl2) concentrations to evaluate salt tolerance limits in hydroculture cultivation. Six concentrations of CaCl2 (0, 1, 2, 5, 10, and 15 g·L-1 referred to as Cont., C1, C2, C5, C10, and C15) were applied to solution - grown plant species. The survival rate, growth index, plant height, plant width, leaf width, leaf length, number of leaves, and relative chlorophyll contents were measured at monthly intervals. Euonymus japonicus, Hedera helix, and Peperomia puteolata survived up to C2, C5, and C10 at each CaCl2 concentration. The Euonymus japonicus was higher in the C1 treatment than in the Cont. for most growth characteristics. Hedera helix had the highest leaf width, leaf length, and number of leaves in the Cont., a significant difference was observed compared with the C1 treatment. The chlorophyll content did not differ significantly between the C5 and Cont. treatments. The leaf width and length of Peperomia puteolata were greater in the C2 and C1 treatments than in the Cont., whereas the number of leaves and chlorophyll content were the highest in C5. Dry weight analysis revealed that Euonymus japonicus, Hedera helix, and Peperomia puteolata were the lowest in the Cont. treatments. Euonymus japonicus was 74% in C15, and Hedera helix, and Peperomia puteolata were analyzed at approximately 37%- 50% and 9%-14%, respectively, regardless of the concentration in the CaCl2 treatment groups. In indoor hydroponic cultivation, the salt tolerance limit concentrations of Euonymus japonicus, Hedera helix, and Peperomia puteolata are 2, 5, and 10 g·L-1, respectively, indicating that hydroculture management techniques should be applied at higher concentrations.

  • Background : Despite recent advances in cancer management, prognosis of ovarian cancer is poor. Anticancer effects of herbal medicine, such as Euonymus alatus Sieb, Oldenlandia diffusa (Willd.) Roxburgh, and Orostachys japonicus A. Berger, have been reported in treatment of ovarian and cervical cancers, but the systematic approaches to explain their molecular mechanism(s) have not yet been established. Objectives : To establish a basis of understanding for anti-cancer mechanisms of herbal medicine, we profiled protein expression in human ovarian and cervical cancer cells treated with the extracts from Euonymus alatus Sieb, Oldenlandia diffusa (Willd.) Roxburgh and Orostachys japonicus A. Berger. Methods : Human ovarian cancer cell line NIH:OVCAR-3, and human cervical cancer cell line HeLa were employed in the present study. Whole protein was obtained from the cells harvested at 48 hours after the treatment with herbal water-extract, and analyzed by 2DE-based proteomic approach. Results : Various changes of protein expression induced by the herbal treatment were monitored : down-regulation of molecular chaperone (calreticulin variant), glycolytic enzymes (D-3-phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase, glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase and alpha-enolase), RNA processing molecules (hnRNP A2/B1), and antioxidant protein (peroxiredoxin 1). Conclusions : Repression of glycolysis has been accepted as the mechanism to increase anticancer reagent's effect. Thus, down-regulation of glycolytic enzymes by the herbal extracts suggested a possible synergistic effect of herbs in the presence of platinum-based therapeutics. In further study, as well as the synergistic effect of the herbs, it has to be further validated whether artificial regulation of hnRNP A2/B1 in ovarian cancer cells affects various cancer survival factors, since RNA processing can be interrupted by deranged expression of hnRNP subtypes, and it results in an inhibition of cancer cell growth.

부산시 가로녹지대 관목의 생육특성 및 뿌리발달 연구 (Growing Characteristics of Shrub in the Planting Strip of Street, Busan City, Korea)

  • 도심내 가로에 조성하는 녹지대는 폭 확보에 한계가 있다. 현재 가로녹지대 관목림 조성을 위한 수종은 녹지대 환경의 고려보다는 경관적 측면에서 여러 수종이 다양하게 식재되고 있는 상태이다. 본 연구에서는 부산시 가로녹지를 대상으로 $Photinia$ $glabra$ (홍가시나무), $Euonymus$ $japonicus$ (사철나무), $Camelia$ $sasanqua$ (애기동백), $Nandina$ $domestica$ (남천), $Abelia$ $grandiflora$ (꽃댕강나무) 5종의 생육상태와 녹지대 조성 특성을 비교하였다. 가로녹지대는 폭 0.5~0.9m로 수종별로 차이는 없었다. 수목의 생육특성 분석결과, 자연지역에서 세근의 발달 폭이 현재 조성된 녹지대 폭보다 좁은 남천과 꽃댕강나무는 생육이 양호하였다. 반면 세근이 폭 2m이상 넓게 발달하는 수종인 홍가시나무, 사철나무, 애기동백은 폭이 좁은 가로녹지대에서는 생육상태가 상대적으로 좋지 않았다. 이에 가로녹지대 조성시 확보할 수 있는 녹지대 폭에 따라 식재하는 수종을 달리할 필요성이 있었다.

조경수목(造景樹木)의 소음감쇠효과(騷音減衰効果)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) - 사철나무와 측백나무 수벽(樹壁)의 비교분석(比較分析) - (Noise Attenuation by Landscape Woody Plants - Comparisons as a Hedge Species Between Japanese Spindle Tree & Oriental Arbor-vitae -)

  • 본(本) 연구(硏究)는 현재 가로변의 수벽조성용(樹壁造成用)으로 널리 사용(使用)되고 있는 사철나무와 측백나무의 소음(騷音) 감쇠정도(減衰程度)를 파악하기 위하여 실시(實施)하였다. 소음감쇠(騷音減衰)에 대(對)한 야외실험(野外實驗)의 경우, 수벽을 대상으로 하여 음원(音源)을 각각 100cm, 200cm 및 400cm의 거리를 두었으며, 수음점(受音點)은 각각 0cm 및 100cm의 두 종류로 하였다. 한편 음향실험실내(音響實驗室內)에서의 실험(實驗)은 사철나무와 측백나무의 단목(單木)을 대상(對象)으로 하였으며, 음향실험실(音響實驗室)의 공간적(空間的)인 규모(規模)의 제한(制限)으로 인하여 음원(音源)은 0cm로 고정(固定)시켰으며, 수음점(受音點)은 대상수목(對象樹木)으로 부터 각각 45, 90 및 180cm의 3가지로 구분(區分)하여 실시(實施)하였다. 각각의 실험(實驗)에 사용(使用)된 음원(音源)은 실내(室內) 실외(室外) 실험(實驗) 모두 1,000, 2,000 및 3,150 Hz였다. 수목(樹木)의 소음감쇠율(騷音減衰率)은 실내(室內) 및 실외(室外) 모두 고주파(高周波) 영역(領域)에서 거리가 멀어짐에 따라 소음(騷音)이 감소(減少)되었으며, 저주파(低周波) 영역(領域)의 경우는 감쇠(減衰)의 비율(比率)이 일정(一定)치 않았는데, 이것은 지면반사파(地面反射波)의 영향(影響)으로 사료(思料)되었다. 일반적(一般的)으로 소음(騷音)의 감쇠정도(減衰程度)는 상록활엽수종(常綠濶葉樹種)인 사철나무 보다는 상록침엽수종(常綠針葉樹種)인 측백나무의 경우가 더 효과적(効果的)인 것으로 사료(思料)되었다.

  • This paper is the sixth report about the fungal diseases of economic resource plants observed newly in Korea. It contains short descriptions on symptoms, occurrence conditions, pathogens, and some phytopathological notes for each of 10 fungal plant diseases. They are identified as circular leaf spot of Ligustrum ovalifolium by Cercospora adusta, leaf spot of Viola spp. by c. violae, leaf spot of Trifolium repens by C. zebrina, hypophyllous leaf sot of Angelica gigas by Passalora depressa, brown leaf spot of Euonymus japonicus by Pseudocercospora destructiva, brown leaf spot of Lonicera japonica by P. lonicericola, brown leaf spot of Parthenocissus tricuspidata by P. vitis, black spot of Echinops latifolius by Ramularia cynarae, leaf spot of Petasites japonicus by R. major, and leaf spot of Plantagoasiactica by R. plantaginis, respectively.

  • 사철나무 잎과 가지에 발생하는 사철깍지벌레로부터4종의 면충좀벌, 제줄깍지좀벌, 주걱깍지좀벌, 장미깍지좀벌 및 Pteroptrix machiaveli (Girault)가 채집되었고, 이중 Pteroptrix machiaveli (Girault) [사철깍지네마디좀벌(신칭)] 1종을 국내분포로 처음 보고한다. 또한 이들 종들의 식별형질, 사진자료, 분포 및 기주 정보도 함께 제공하였다.

  • Methanol extracts of eighty Chinese medicinal plants were investigated for platelet-activating factor (PAF) receptor binding inhibitory activity using rabbit platelet. Extracts of Cratoxylon ligustrinum, Kalimeris indica, Euonymus japonica, Ophiopogon japonicus, Gleditsia sinensis, Clausena lansium, Agave sisalana were found to exhibit significant inhibitory effects. Chloroform partition of the Methanol extract of Kalimeris indica was further fractionated by column chromatography to afford one strong active subfraction with 93.6% inhibition at a concentration of $100{\mu}g/ml$.

Assessment of the Distribution of the Street Trees of Suwon City for Biodiversity

  • This research is about analysis and evaluation of biodiversity of Suwon's street tree, then understanding the problem of it and finally finding a solution. Because the increasing damage of the street trees by disease and insects, insecticide is applied to prevent further damage. However, this insecticide is found to be cancer genic and causing hygienic threat to civilians. Therefore, by gathering Suwon's internal statistics about Suwon's street tree, the trees are divided into three categories, tall evergreen trees, deciduous trees, shrubs following Frank's 30-20-10 theory(1990). Also, according to species diversity index, the problem of disease and insect is researched in terms of biodiversity, and here we suggests solutions to counter such problems. According to the results, the trees planted in Suwon was found to be 31 families, 43 genus and 58 species. The most used kinds, almost 85% of the whole species, are found to be Rhododendron indicum (L.) Sweet, Buxus koreana Nakai ex Chung & al, Euonymus japonicus Thunb, Ligustrum obtusifolium Siebold & Zucc. Besides these, the rest of 15% of street trees had little variety. Therefore, it is necessary to plant tree variously and equally in terms of biodiversity. If this Frank's 10-20-30 solution is not enough to completely solve coulure problem, then further research will be done on soil properties, and local features for improvement of Suwon street tress.

거제도 가라산·노자산 일대 낙엽활엽수림의 생태적 특성 규명 (Identification of ecological characteristics of Deciduous broad-leaved forest, Garasan(Mt.)·Nojasan(Mt.) at GeoJae)

  • 본 연구는 남해안에 분포하는 양호한 산림 식생의 복원과 관리뿐만 아니라 장기적인 측면에서 기후변화에 따른 변화 경향을 파악하고자 가라산과 노자산 서사면에 분포하는 식생의 식물군집구조 특성을 조사·분석하였다. 86개 조사구를 대상으로 군락을 분류한 결과, 저지대를 중심으로 분포하는 곰솔-굴피나무군락, 곰솔-소나무군락, 계곡부 및 전석지대를 중심으로 출현하는 개서어나무-낙엽활엽수군락, 때죽나무-낙엽활엽수군락, 고로쇠나무-낙엽활엽수군락, 낙엽활엽수군락, 느티나무군락, 상대적으로 해발고가 높고 급경사 사면에 분포하는 졸참나무군락, 졸참나무-때죽나무군락, 때죽나무-소사나무군락, 참회나무군락으로 유형화되었다. 천이경향상 상록침엽수는 낙엽활엽수로의 천이가 진행될 것이나 수령이 약 50년인 개서어나무, 느티나무, 고로쇠나무 등 낙엽활엽교목림은 층위구조가 발달되었을 뿐만 아니라 생태적으로 안정되어 현재의 상태를 유지할 것으로 판단되었다. 환경요인으로는 표고, pH, 점토와 실트의 함량, Mg++, Ca++ 등이 식물 군락 분포에 직간접적으로 영향을 미치는 것으로 분석되었다.
