  • Wandering spleen is a rare clinical condition caused by lax splenic suspensory ligaments. The laxity of ligaments causes torsion of splenic vascular pedicle. CT scan of a 7-year-old girl with abdominal pain showed a non-enhancing lobular mass in lower abdomen. Small bowel loops were located at the right-sided abdomen and colonic loops at the left-sided abdomen. MRI scan showed non-enhancing heterogeneous mass with twisted vascular pedicle. To our knowledge, only a few cases have been reported about wandering spleen diagnosed on MRI.

  • An amount of electric arc furnace slag, by-products generated in iron manufacture, is being increased. Therefore, it is required to recycle the electric arc furnace slag. Currently, it is possible to use the electric arc furnace slag as the aggregates of the concrete through the insurance of volume stability but not in the past because of the expansibility of f-CaO and f-MgO. In this study, simple beam tests via Ichinose method were performed to estimate the bond properties of reinforced concrete (RC) beams using the electric arc furnace slag. The results of the test showed that the showed that specimens using the electric arc furnace oxidizing slag aggregates have similar or more bond capacity relative to the specimen of natural aggregates. Especially, bond capacity of the specimens using the slag aggregates was almost one and a half times higher than a specimen using natural aggregates.

  • Purpose of the study was to analyze the supraspinatus outlet image of sagittal MRI in rotator cuff disease. We analyzed the sagittal views of the shoulder MRI of 78 cases without cuff tear. The cases were divided into 51 cases of rotator cuff disease group and 27 cases of control group. Six parameters of acromial tilt, coracoacromial ligament angle, length and height of coracoacromial triangle, length of acromial side of the baseline and distance of intrusion of the humeral head were compared for each group. The distance of intrusion of the humeral head was the most significantly different one, 0.52cm for rotator cuff disease group and 0.15cm for control group. Intrusion of the humeral head to the supraspinatus outlet space from the bottom may be a contributing factor developing rotator cuff disease. The intrusion may precede to tearing of the rotator cuff.

  • Cognitive impairment is a result of dementia of diverse causes, such as cholinergic dysfunction and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Houttuynia cordata Thunb. (Saururaceae) has long been used as a traditional herbal medicine. It has biological activities including protective effects against amyloid beta ($A{\beta}$) toxicity, via regulation of calcium homeostasis, in rat hippocampal cells. To extend previous reports, we investigated the effects of water extracts of H. cordata herb (HCW) on tauopathies, also involving calcium influx. We then confirmed the effects of HCW in improving memory impairment and neuronal damage in mice with Ab-induced neurotoxicity. We also investigated the effects of HCW against scopolamine-induced cholinergic dysfunction in mice. In primary neuronal cells, HCW inhibited the phosphorylation of tau by regulating p25/p35 expression in $A{\beta}$-induced neurotoxicity. In mice with $A{\beta}$-induced neurotoxicity, HCW improved cognitive impairment, as assessed with behavioral tasks, such as novel object recognition, Y-maze, and passive avoidance tasks. HCW also inhibited the degeneration of neurons in the CA3 region of the hippocampus in Ab-induced neurotoxicity. Moreover, HCW, which had an $IC_{50}$ value of $79.7{\mu}g/ml$ for acetylcholinesterase inhibition, ameliorated scopolamine-induced cognitive impairment significantly in Y-maze and passive avoidance tasks. These results indicate that HCW improved cognitive impairment, due to cholinergic dysfunction, with inhibitory effects against tauopathies and cholinergic antagonists, suggesting that HCW may be an interesting candidate to investigate for the treatment of AD.

  • The study to improve engineering students' performance in studying physics lacked despite of the importance of studying physics in engineering education. The cognitive belief and the motivational belief in studying physics had a strong effect on studying physics. The purpose of this study was to seek the educational way through comparing professors' expectations with students' beliefs about the cognitive belief and the motivational belief in studying physics. The cognitive belief in studying physics was considered as variables like 'knowledge', 'learning' and 'relation'. The motivational belief in studying physics was considered as variables like 'expectancy' and 'value'. It was the 'expectancy' that was the most different dimension between professors' expectations and students' beliefs. It means that students have little confidence in their abilities to study physics, though professors expect their students to be confident. Professor who teaches physics to engineering students recognize these differences, need to have interest in affective domains of beliefs to teach. In addition, there is need to teaching and learning strategies that can lead engineering students' beliefs about ability to perform the task, the purpose, importance, interesting for physics.

  • The separation and purification of succinate are necessary for the succinic acid production by a fermentation process. Among the purification processes, desalination of succinate is inevitable. In this work, electrodialysis was selected as a desalination method and its operating parameters affecting the degree of desalination and energy consumption were examined. Commercialized electrodialysis apparatus was used in this work and its optimum operating parameters were determined by using design of experiment (DOE) method. Voltage, concentration of succinate, and pH were selected as main parameters. Among them, voltage seemed to be the most important one. The final conversion of succinate to succinic acid was calculated when the operating parameters were optimized. Finally, the effect of impurities, such as corn steep oil, yeast extract, and dextrose on the electrodialysis efficiency was also studied.

  • KAISTAT-4 is the fourth experimental microsatellite of KITSAT series which has been developed by Satellite Technology Research Center of KAIST for the last two years. The launch of KAISTSAT-4 is scheduled in 2003. The primary experimental payloads consist of Far-ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph and Space Physis Package. In a similar way to KITSAT series, the interior of KAISTSAT-4 comprises mainly a set of stacked aluminium-alloy module boxes, each being capable of acting as the primary load path in the mechanical structure. The KAISTSAT-4 qualification model is now designed, fabricated, integrated, and tested to verify if the electrical and mechanical components work and can withstand the launch environments. All the required structural tests have been performed to a sufficient degree to satisfy the intent of the test requirements. This paper presents the structural system and launch environmental test results of KAISTSAT-4 qualification model.

  • Environmental specimen banks provide the baselines for the scientists and decision makers to do research using the past and present specimens to expect the possible contaminant implications of the future. Many chemicals that are considered harmless now but not found may be found and pose threats in the future. Collected specimens of animals and plants should be conserved without contamination for future analysis. To ensure the availability of samples for the retrospective analysis, the establishment and maintenance of specimen banks in the developing and developed nations has become absolutely necessary. National Environmental Specimen Bank (NESB) established at National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) in 2009. For the application of NESB, several activities such as standard operating procedures (SOPs) development have been prepared. This study applied the guidelines for sampling and sample treatment of five environmental specimens which had been prepared from 2007 to 2009. The target species were shoots of red pine and Korean pine, leaves of Mongolian oak, eggs of domestic pigeon and muscles and livers of common carp. The NESB will enhance the quality of environmental assessment and environmental monitoring based on real time and retrospective analysis.

  • We have developed SH (shear horizontal) surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors for detection of the immobilization and hybridization of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) on the gold coated delay line of transverse SAW devices. The experiments of DNA immobilization and hybridization were performed with 15-mer oligonucleotides (probe and complementary target DNA). The sensor consists of twin SAW delay line oscillators operating at 100 MHz fabricated on $36^{\circ}$ rotated Y-cut $LiTaO_3$ piezoelectric single crystals. The relative change in the frequency of the two oscillators was monitored to detect the hybridization between target DNA and immobilized probe DNA in pH 7.4 PBS (phosphate buffered saline) solution. The measurement results showed a good response of the sensor to the mass loading effects of the DNA immobilization and hybridization with the sensitivity up to $1.55{\cal}ng/{\cal}ml/Hz$.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to establish guidelines for ankle-brachial index (ABI), toe-brachial index (TBI) and toe pressure with regard to healing of diabetic foot amputation wound. Material and Methods: We designed a retrospective study that included patients with diabetic foot ulcer. From 2008 to 2011, 46 patients who had suffered from amputation of a foot due to diabetic foot ulcer were included in this study. We divided them into amputation-success group and amputation-revision group, and compared their ankle-brachial index (ABI), toe-brachial index (TBI) and toe pressure between two groups. Amputation-revision group is that first forefoot amputation is failed to heal successfully and need to have another proximal amputation. Results: Toe pressure was 78 mmHg (54~107) in the amputation success group, 0 mmHg (0~43) in the amputation revision group (p=0.000). Ankle-brachial index was 1.1650(1.0475~1.1975) in the amputation success group, 0.92(0.5275~1.0750) in the amputation revision group (p=0.05), and toe-brachial index was 0.6100(0.4050~0.7575) in the amputation success group, 0.00(0.00~0.4150) in the amputation revision group (p=0.04), respectively. Conclusion: ABI, TBI, toe pressure of amputation success group were significantly higher than those of amputation revision group.
