  • The composites of EVA/EPDM including aluminum trioxide (ATH) as a fire retardant were manufactured for the purpose of improving low temperature property and flame resistance in the rubbery materials. The ratio of EVA to EPDM didn't affect the flame resistance of the rubber composites. The addition of ATH resulted in increase of the flame resistance. In the evaluation of the cold resistance, the increasing EPDM content showed enhancement of cold resistance in the composites due to increasing low Tg EPDM. It was found out that tensile strengths of the composites showed a maximum value at 100 phr of ATH by reinforcing effect, but a minimum value at 200 phr of ATH owing to slippage between the flame retardant by the external stress. In the measurement of solvent resistance in tetrahydrofuran, the increasing ATH content yielded enhancement of solvent resistance by reducing swelling of the composite, and increasing EPDM content also resulted from increase of the solvent resistance by reduction of polarizability as well as increase of crosslink in the composites.

  • Polypropylenes(PP) with different melt index values were mixed with ethylene-propylene rubber(EPR) or ethylene-propylene diene monomer rubber(EPDM) and an ethylene copolymer containing carboxylic acid group in a twin screw extruder. Then test specimens were prepared from the pellets of the blends with an injection molding machine. The mechanical properties and morphology of fractured surfaces were measured. Relative peak intensities of carboxylic acid group on the specimen surface were measured with an attennuated total reflection infrared spectrometer (ATR-IR) and compared with each other. The blend specimens were found to have the gradient morphology of rubber domains in PP matrix in the core region and PP skin layer. The blends containing PP of higher melt index showed greater content of ethylene copolymer containing carboxylic acid on the surface when the relative peak intensities of ATR-IR for carboxylic acid were compared. As the melt index values were increased, the decrease tendency in mechanical propeties such as tensile strength and impact strength was more significant for PP/EPR blends than PP/EPDM blends.

  • Novel composite membranes, which delivered high separation performance for propylene/propane mixtures, were developed by coating inert poly(ethylene-co-propylene) rubber (EPR) onto a porous polyester substrate, followed by the physical distribution of $AgBF_4$. Scanning electron microscopy-wavelength dispersive spectrometer (SEM-WDS) revealed that silver salts were uniformly distributed in the EPR layer. The physical dispersion of the silver salts in the inert polymer matrix, without specific interaction, was characterized by FT-IR and FT-Raman spectroscopy. The high separation performance was presumed to stem from the in-situ dissolution of crystalline silver ionic aggregates into free silver ions, which acted as an active propylene carrier within a propylene environment, leading to facilitated propylene transport through the membranes. The membranes were functional at all silver loading levels, exhibiting an unusually low threshold carrier concentration (less than 0.06 of silver weight fraction). The separation properties of these membranes, i.e. the mixed gas selectivity of propylene/propane ${\sim}55$ and mixed gas permeance ${\sim}7$ GPU, were stable for several days.

  • In general, butyl rubber(IIR : isobutylene isoprene rubber) has excellent gas permeability resistance and impact absorbance property as low resilience elastomer. In this experiment butyl rubber blends with EPDM(ethylene propylene diene monomer) were prepared by mechanical mixing method. Curing behavior, physical properties and ozone resistance etc. were subsequently examined. Measurement results of gas transmission rate test shows that butyl rubber contents above 50 wt% showed significant decrease in gas permeability resistant property. However, in butyl rubber/EPDM blend, EPDM contents above 25 wt% indicates no surface change due to improvement of ozone resistance under the condition of 50 pphm, $50^{\circ}C$, 120 hrs.

  • Ethyl-branched polyethylene[PE(2)] containing 2mole% ethyl branch and three ethylene-propylene rubbers(EPR's) haying the same ethylene(E)-propylene(P) molar ratio(E/P=50/50) with different stereoregularity, that is, random EPR(r-EPR), alternating-EPR(alt-FPR) and isotactic-alternating-EPR(iso-alt-EPR) were mixed for the investigation of their properties depending on the stereoregurarity. The three blends were immiscible at room temperature, and showed the simple additivity effect in density behavior. The melting point depression with blend composition increased in order of PE(2)/r-EPR>PE(2)/alt-EPR>PE(2)/iso-alt-EPR. In the tensile test, this blend systems have the lowest value or the breaking strength at FE(2) fraction of 0.5. This phenomenon results from the greastest separated phase morphology at this blend composition.

  • In order to improve incombustibility of EPDM(Ethylene propylene diene monomer)-based rubber, inorganic materials as $Al(OH)_3$ and $Sb_2O_3$ were added. The mechanical and thermal properties have been measured for vulcanized rubber loaded with different concentrations of $Al(OH)_3$ and $Sb_2O_3$. As inorganic material contents increases from 5phr to 30phr, the specific gravity and hardness increase while elongation at break decreases. This study performed incombustibility test and thermal analysis through TGA(Thermogravimetric Analyzer). As a results, incombustible and thermal properties of EPDM-based rubber were improved as $Al(OH)_3$ and $Sb_2O_3$ contents increase.

  • In this study, for a radiator hose made of carbon black filled EPDM(ethylene-propylene diene monomer) rubber, a measuring method of crosslink density was established to analyze the aging behaviors under thermo-oxidative stresses. At $125^{\circ}C$, the crosslink density of the rubber specimens decreased slightly in the initial stage, but increased with increasing the aging time. Such variation in crosslink density was similar to that of tensile strength. This might be due to the formation of sulphoxide crosslinks as well as to additional crosslinks made by the reaction of unvalcunized sulfurs. A high temperature aging of rubber specimens at $180^{\circ}C$ caused a slight increase in crosslink density while it did a large decrease in tensile strength and elongation. With aging at high temperature, the formation of carbonyl groups in EPDM molecule chain and formation of sulphoxide crosslink, rather than the crosslink density variation itself, had a large influence on such changes in mechanical property.

  • The ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) blends with acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) were prepared by mechanical mixing method. Mooney viscosity, cure behaviors, compression set and dynamic mechanical properties were subsequently examined. Dynamic characteristics of the entire blends determined from a Rheovibron generally showed two glass transitions (T'$_{g}$s), -43$^{\circ}C$ and -4$^{\circ}C$ for NBR and EPDM, respectively. The tan $\delta$ peak monotonically shifted toward the higher temperature with increasing NBR content. It was also found that the optimum cure time was significantly decreased with loading of NBR.

  • The main objective of this study is to improve abrasion resistance and wet slip resistance of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) by blending with ethylene-propylene-diene monomer rubber (EPDM) or polybutadiene rubber (BR) for the application of the footwear outsole materials. With addition of 10 wt% of EPDM or BR, TPU/EPDM and TPU/BR blends exhibited higher NBS abrasion resistance, tensile properties and wet slip resistance than TPU. However, with further increasing content of EPDM and BR, abrasion resistance and tensile properties of the blends decreased. Improvement in abrasion resistance and tensile properties with 10 wt% of addition of EPDM or BR may be due to better microphase separation of TPU.
