The functional materials have been developed as a promising research topic toward the end uses for organic materials and applications. In this study, fluorescein based dye was synthesized by three step reaction. We have designed and synthesized the colorimetric dye through the reactions of fluorescein and methoxy group and ethylene diamine and squaric acid. The structure of the non-fluorescent spirolactam was elucidated by $^1H$-NMR, LC-Mass and FT-IR analyzes. Further studies are in progress to understand the effects of various substituent during the recognition process and to develop fluorescein based sensors for cations or anions.

To improve the fibrillation phenomenon and processibili to of poly(p-phenyleneterephthalamide) (PPD-T) , a P/E copolyamide was prepared by introducing 4,4'-ethylene dianiline (EDA) into rigid chain backbone. The effects of semi-flexible segment on the liquid crystalline properties were investigated. The EDA, used as a comonomer, was prepared by catalylitic reduction of p,p'-dinitrophenyl , obtained by oxidative coupling of p,p'-dinitrotoluene. Various high molecular weight PIE copolyamides were prepared by low temperature solution polycondensation of terephthaloyl chloride (TPC) with various mixtures of p-phenylene diamine (PPD) and EOA. The PfE copolyamides were completely dissolved in 100% svlfuric acid, and the phase transition of P/E copolyamide-sulfuric acid systems was examined in teams of concentration and temperature. Over the chemical compositions, PIE=911, 812, and 713, solutions of anisotropic single phase were acquired. In particular, the two mixing ratios, 911 and 812, gave a good anisotropic spinning dope.
Effects of catalysts on network structure, hard segment length and distribution of polyurethane foams in the absence of catalysts were investigated. CFC free all MDI-based poly urethane foams were prepared from poly(ethylene adipate)glycol, 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate, and water. Amino catalysts used were 1,4-diazabicyclo[2,2,2]octane(DABCO), N, N,N',N'-tetramethyl--hexane-1,6-diamine(MR), bis(2-methylamino ethyl)ether(ET), 1,8-diazabicyclo-[5,4,0]-undecene-7(DBU). Dibutyltindilaurate(DBTL) as control was also used. Hard segment components of polyurethane foams were obtained by a selective degradation of polyester chains with 0.01N KOH-methanol solution. The PUFs with DBU catalyst contained more amount of isocyanurate components than other PUFs. On the other hand, the PUFs with ET, MR, DBTL catalysts contained more amount of allophanate and biuret component than the other PUFs.
The specific ion effects are observed in the alumina-metal EDTA(Ethylene Diamine Tetraacetic Acid) system. These effects seem to be associated with the fluidity of the metal ion in the complex. A consideration of the order of adsorption of the complexes on alumina indicates that a specific ion effect also affects the stability of the system. It is clear that EDTA and its heavy metal complexes have a significant effect on the dewaterability of alumina. These effects are not well represented by zeta potential measurements, especially for EDTA alone. With the nonspeciating complexes, though, the maximum permeability is predicted by the pH$\_$zpc/ from zeta potential measurements. At other pH value, the refiltration rate is better predicted by the state of coagulation as measured by log W.
Cypermethrin-containing polyurea microcapsules were prepared by interfacial polymerization using aromatic 2,4-toluene diisocyanate(TDI) and Ethylene diamine(EDA) as wall forming materials. The effects of the protective colloids of polyvinylalcohol(PVA) and gelatin were investigated through experimentation. The mean size of the polyurea microcapsules was smaller and the surface morphology of the PVA was much smoother than gelatin. In addition the release behavior was much more controlled and better sustained. As the concentration of protective colloid increased, the wall membrane of the polyurea microcapsules became more stable, the thermal stability of the wall membrane increased, the mean particle size became smaller, and the particle distribution was more uniform. The release behavior of the core material changed according to the concentration. As the gelatin concentration was increased, a more controlled and sustained release behavior was observed. However, in the case of PVA, the increase of PVA concentration lead to a more rapid release rate.
A new flexible $N_2O_2$-type tetradentate ligand, ethylene-diamine-N,N'-di-${\alpha}$-butyric acid (eddb), has been synthesized, and a series of cobalt (III) complexes of eddb, $[Co(edda)(L)]^{n+}$ (L = $Cl_2$, $(H_2O)_2$, $Cl\;H_2O$, and $Co^2_3$), have been prepared. Only s-cis isomers have been yielded during the preparation of complexes. Ring strain is cited as the primary cause for the preference for the s-cis geometric configuration.

In this study, the feasibility of soil washing and soil flushing was investigated to treat Zn-contaminated railroad soil. Various organic acids including ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) and citric acid as well as inorganic acids such as hydrochloric acid (HCl) and phosphoric acid were tested to evaluate washing efficiency. Generally, inorganic acid showed higher removal efficiency compared to organic acids. Particularly, EDTA, well known as the most effective washing agent for removal of heavy metals from soil, was not efficient to remove zinc in this study. Among washing agents tested in this study, HCl was the most effective. However, it is not effective to use HCl solution over 0.1 M concentration. Sequential process using HCl was effective to enhance the removal efficiency of zinc. In column test, the removal efficiency of Zn was 27%. Accordingly, it is feasible to treat Zn-contaminated railroad soil using soil washing or flushing with HCI.

Trypsin can be immobilized on silk fibroin fiber (SFF) by introducing several spacer arms, such as ethylene diamine (ED), bovine serum albumin (BSA) and silk sericin (SS). Direct immobilization on silk fiber (SFFGA) has low activity because of the steric hindrance between the trypsin and substrate. The introduction of spacer arms onto SFF-GA can enhance the activity of trypsin by reducing the steric hindrance. When ED is used as a spacer arm, the activity of trypsin has increased but its stability decreased due to the increased hydrophobicity of SFF. BSA and SS, as a spacer arm, have better results in both activity and stability. SFF-BSA shows some decrease in the specific activity due to improper immobilizatin. SFF-SS maintained 90% of its initial activity even after 12 hrs incubation at $50^{\circ}C$. In the case of repeated hydrolysis of silk sericin with immobilized trypsin, SFF-GA and SFF-ED lost 50% of their initial activity right after first run, whereas SFF-BSA and SFF-SS maintained 80% of their initial activities even after 5 runs. Higher operational stability is due to increased hydrophilicity of SFF by introducing hydrophilic spacer arms such as BSA and SS. The high content of serine in SS increases the hydrophilicity of SFF resulting the best results among other spacer arms.
For thermal adaptable fabrics, the polyurethane-urea microcapsules containing phase-change materials (PCMs: hexadecane, octadecane and eicosane) were successfully synthesized by interfacial polycondensation using 2,4-toluene diisocyanate (TDI)/poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG400)/ethylene diamine (EDA) as shell monomers and nonionic surfactant NP-12 in an emulsion system under stirring rates of $3,000{\sim}13,000$ rpm. The mean particle size of microcapsule decreased significantly with increasing the stirring rate up to 11,000 rpm, and then leveled off. The mean particle size increased with increasing the content and molecular weight (eicosane > octadecane > hexadecane) of PCMs at the same stirring rate. The mean particle sizes of microcapsules were found to decrease with increasing the NP-12 content up to 1.5 wt%, and thereafter increased a little. It was found that the melting temperature ($T_m$) and crystallization temperature ($T_c$) of three kinds of encapsulated PCMs and their enthalpy changes (${\Delta}H_m,{\Delta}H_c$) increased with increasing PCM contents. The encapsulation efficiencies (Ee) of hexadecane microcapsule linearly increased with increasing the content of hexadecane. It was found that the stable microcapsule containing 50 wt% of hexadecane could be obtained in this study. However, Ee of octadecane and eicosane microcapsules increased with increasing PCM's contents up to 40 wt%, and then decreased a little. By considering the encapsulation efficiency, it was found that the maximum/optimum contents of octadecane and eicosane microcapsules were about 40 wt%. By the dynamic thermal performance test, it was found that the maximum buffering levels of Nylon fabrics coated with hexadecane, octadecane, and eicosane microcapsules were about $-2.4/+2.9^{\circ}C,\;-3.6/+3.6^{\circ}C\;and\;-4.0/+4.7^{\circ}C$, respectively.

This paper investigated that the functional group and chemical structure of additives affect ice adhesion in aqueous solutions cooling with stirring. In order to compare the effect on the ice adhesion in aqueous solutions, the functional group like carboxyl (-COOH), hydroxyl(-OH) or amine($-NH_{2}$) one were compared each other. Among the functional group, the strength of the hydrogen bonding force order is amine, hydroxyl and carboxyl one. It supports that ethylene diamine 7 mass% solution including amine group was effective to suppress the ice adhesion, though it is corrosive. Also, the ice adhesion were effectively resisted and formed lots of ice slurries in cooling experiment of 7 mass% solution of 1, 2-and 1, 3-propanediol which is different molecular structure but equal molecular weight each other.
