In this paper, a new pitch extraction method, the area comparison method, is proposed. By the speech production model, the area of the first peak on a pitch interval of speech signals is emphasized. By using the above characteristics, this method have more advantages than the others for pitch extraction. The defective decision caused by an impulsive noise is minimized and the pre-filtering is not necessary for this rr ethos, because the integration of signals takes place in the process.

This Paper examines theoretical terrains and design strategies of landscape urbanism which is an emerging hybrid field at the intersection of architecture, landscape architecture, and urbanism. Landscape urbanism offers alternative approaches for theory, education, and practice in contemporary landscape architecture. It views the emergent urban complex sites-post-industrial sites, landfill, brownfield, urban void, etc., not as a weakness, but as a strength. Landscape urbanism poses an understanding of landscape as an element of urban infrastructure. In this sense, the landscape is seen in the context of contemporary urban development and public works. As a complex amalgam, landscape urbanism is more than a design style it is an ethos, an attitude, a way of thinking and acting. We can chart the main characteristics of landscape urbanism such as horizontality and surface, infrastructure, process, technique, and ecology. Multilayered examples of landscape urbanism can be seen in several experimental practices such as worts of Rem Koolhaas, MVRDV, Adriaan Geuze/West 8, James Comer, etc. It is possible to summarize the productive strategies for landscape urbanism as follows : thickening, folding, new materials, nonprogrammed use, impermanence, and movement.

Art of today is expressed in various images incorporated in industrial development and visible in industrial parks, modern cities. Avant garde art and modernism brought abstract and conceptual art into conflict in the early 20th century and they absorbed elements of each other and grew into post modernism, which emerged in the 1960s and is still current. The avant garde challenged what was lofty and sometimes opposed modernism and sometimes fed it in cycles until post modernism was established. 'Trans avant garde', which, unlike modernism asserted individual expression, also appeared in the 1970s. Trans avant garde is spiritual art in which the artist's conversation with his soul returns. This study examines the readjustments the trans avant garde is making in its relationship with the dominant ethos of different values and offers the world art with important spiritual beauty. Trans avant garde art takes many forms, from thing to huge, which are manifested every where in architecture, interior design and everyday life.

This study examined parental perceptions and use of traditional play songs for infants by parent's age and gender. The 464 subjects living in Daejeon City provided data via questionnaires and recorded tapes. Of 13 play songs for infants, parents were really acquainted only with Jjak-jjak-kkung, Do-ri Do-ri, Gon-ji Gon-ji, and Jam-jam. However, most parents thought traditional play songs are important for the education of the whole child. Mothers and parents in their thirties and forties considered traditional play songs to be more important than did fathers and parents in their twenties. Though infants liked traditional play songs, most parents didn't use them with their infants because parents knew few traditional play songs and they had little time to play with their infants. Lack of time was a more serious problem for fathers than for mothers.

The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of European middle class, ethos to costume. This study is concerned with historic situation about enlightment and French revolution, and the change process of costume before and after the French Revolution. In order to investigate the relationship, this studies include the phenomenon of costume in the basis of thoughts of the age (enlightment), political event (French revolution) and social system (middle classes). The Influence of enlightment to costume of man and children were which emphasized practical aspect. Children costume was developed independently from costume of adult before French revolution. French revolution played a roll in silhouette, color, texture of costume for man. Especially pantalons which names Sans-culotte generalized as modern clothing for man. Women freed from corset because of the influence of neo-classicism for a while. However, costume of woman did not change much because women were excluded from of enlightment.

The last decade has seen great design opportunities for tall building construction around the globe. The best designs represent a new generation of skyscrapers that go beyond willful preconceptions of building form and iconography, trying instead to simultaneously address interrelated issues of program space utility, structural efficiency, and environmentally sustainable systems. The resulting identities of these towers are unique because of their search for the intersection of spaces tuned to people's needs, expressive optimized structures, and high performance, site-responsive systems. This paper, through examples of recent SOM towers, both built and unbuilt, will discuss how a design becomes content-driven, how ideas create value, and how the typology of the tall building is advanced through the integration of architecture design and engineering systems.

This study aimed to find the way to help participants build capacity in rural development projects, through some case studies and Q-methodology. Decentralization and diffusion of bottom-up approach in rural development projects are the main contextual factors in this study. With the ethos of bottom-up approach in rural development, the human and financial inputs for capacity building increased drastically in the area of rural development policy. Four types of capacity building methods were identified in this study; training, consulting, learning organization, and forum. Theses methods were used more at planning step than implementation step in rural development projects. The government's effort to strengthen leadership in rural areas should be continued. The existing government's training program for capacity building had better include more diverse clients. Actions for capacity building should be centered on the needs of the participants in fields. Especially, organizing learning units is very important. Governments' rural development policy should establish the proper process which can help local actors plan their projects with enough time span.

This study purposes to analyse what games are played and what play-songs are sung among Chinese primary and middle school children of immigrants who emigrated from Korea to 延邊 about 50 years ago. Questionnaire survey, asking about the kinds of games, play-materials, the origins of the games, and the contents of play-songs, was conducted on 50 5th-grade-children and 50 middle school students. The results are as follows: The primary school children have enjoyed physical play. While playing, they sang the songs which they learned from their mother, grand parents, siblings, and teachers. The middle school children tend to play alone more than the primary ones, watching videos and listening to music. Especially they enjoy the popular songs of South Korea. This phenomena reflects the cultural change of the communist society which is struggling to transform its system to open market system.

An innovative Panel ExTension SATellite(PETSAT) and propulsion system for PETSAT, are presented in this paper. First, we outline what PETSAT is. Next, based on PETSAT ethos, design policy of the propulsion system is provided. According to the policy, we designed propulsion system and concretely estimated and assembled mono-propellant and bi-propellant systems, and it indicated that mono-propellant propulsion with 50-60 seconds of specific impulse and 1 N of thrust is probable. In the case of bi-propellant, 120-150 seconds of specific impulse is valid even based on the design policy. We conducted captive tests of mono-propellant and bi-propellant propulsions with a breadboard model of propulsion system for PETSAT, and obtained good operations and performances. Based on the test results, we designed and manufactured flight model propulsion system for PETSAT. We are planning to demonstrate it in SOHLA-2L project progressed by the Space Oriented Higashiosaka Leading Association(SOHLA). SOHLA-2L will be the first on-orbit demonstrator of PETSAT in 2008.

Sustainability is an important topic within a variety of design areas, including fashion. The 'fast fashion' behavior of consumers is one of the big challenges that sustainable living faces. For the fashion industry, sustainability can be seen as a regulating ethos for higher quality and longer-lasting products, which I argue as embodying an intersection between sustainability and luxury. This study establishes a conceptual model for 'sustainable luxury' that can be implemented as a guide in the fashion design industry and education field. This paper will focus particularly on craft-based fashion within the industry. Through conceptual analysis and case studies, I analyze sustainable luxury through the scope of Soper's (2007) 'alternative hedonism', linking hedonic and selfidentity values as a foundation for the acceptance of and continued drive toward more sustainable luxury products. Unlike other studies which only emphasize the ecological and environmental aspects of sustainability, viz. green/eco design, this study explores sustainability as balanced with its four dimensions: environmental, economic, social, and cultural. Case studies will exemplify this redefined notion of sustainable luxury.
