  • To evaluate the effect of ethanol pretreatment on the liver and serum xanthine oxidase(XO) activity, the bromobenzene(40mg/kg body wt., i.p.) was orally given 3 times daily to the Sprague-Dawley male rats pretreated with 5% ethanol throughout 2 months. Bromobenzene treated rats pretreated with ethanol showed the more decreased activity of serum and liver XO, and lower value of V than those of only bromobenzene treated rats. Bu the bromobenzene treatment, ethanol pretreated rats showed the more decreased levels of serum alanine aminotransferase activity and liver weight/bo여 weight(%), and decreased degree of liver damage on histopathological observation than the control group.

  • This study was undertaken to investigate effects of alcohol and dietary protein levels on serum lipids and enzyme activities in 15 week-old male rats given a normal diet. Rats were divided into 8 groups : control group (16% protein 16PC) and 8%(8PE) 16%(16PE) and 24% protein groups(24PE) to which was given 5% ethanol mixed into their drinking water after 4 weeks and 10 weeks. Body weight organ weight and various blood components were determined at 4 and 10 weeks. Body weight gain organ weight hemoglobin concentration and hematocrit value were not influenced by ethanol and dietary protein levels. The levels of total cholesterol HDL-cholesterol and phospholipid in serum were not affected by ethanol consumption. Serum triglyceride concen-trations after 10 weeks were significnatly increased ethanol-treated group compared with that of control group and the effect was greater in low protein group than control group. Serum ALP activity was significantly higher in 8PE group than other group but there was no influence by ethanol consumption.

  • To investigate the effects of Ixeris sonchifolia Hance diets on serum and hepatic lipid levles and enzyme activities in rats administered with ethanol chronically, Sprague-Dawley male rats were AIN-76 diet(control), control diet plus ethanol, control plus Ixeris sonchifolia Hance diet, or control plus Ixeris sonchifolia Hance diet plus ethanol for 30 days. Ixeris sonchifolia Hance diets significantly decreased the serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol, and GOT levels that were increased due to the chronic ethanol administration. In addition, Ixeris sonchifolia Hance diets significantly decreased the liver triglyceride and total lipid levels that were increased due to the ethanol administration. The present findings, combined with previous data showing differences in the effects of cabbage diets having a high or a low level of GABA on the lipid levels and the serum Y-GPT activity of rats(Cha and OH[2000] J. Korean Soc. Food Sci. Nutr. 29, 500-505) raise the possibility that GABA in plants could have a nytraceutical role in the recovery of chronic alcohol-related diseases. • Several mutation procedures have been compared to obtain an ethanol-tolerant Saccha- romyces diastaticus strain secreting glucoamylase. These procedures include spontaneous mutation, EMS treatment, UV irradiation, and combination of EMS treatment and UV irradiation. All these methods were followed by adaptation of the yeast cells to gradually higher ethanol concentration. Among these procedures, the combined method of EMS treatment and UV irradiation gave the promising result, i.e. the ethanol tolerance of the yeast increased from 11.5%(v/v) to 14.0%(v/v). Respiratory deficient petite mutants of industrial and ethanol-tolerant yeast strains have been isola- ted and hybridized with haploid S. diastaticus strains. The resulting hybrids showed increased ethanol tolerance and starch-fermentability.

  • Effects of ethanlo treatment on the structural and thermal characteristics of regenerated Antheraea pernyi silk fibroin (RSF) were investigated. Infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffractometry showed that the conformational transition of RSF might be affected by concentration of ethanol and its treatment time. The structure of RSF was rapidly changed from random coil to $\beta$-sheet conformation when RSF was treated with les than 75% ethanol concentration. However, RSF treated with ethanol(100%) did not show conformational change. Differential scanning calorimetry showed that exotherm at 232$\^{C}$ disappeared and the intensity of endotherm at 228$\^{C}$ decreased with treatment of 75% ethanol. Dynamic thermal analysis showed that loss modulus (E") and tan $\delta$$\_$E/ of RSF treated with aqueous ethanol was broaden and shifted to higher temperature in comparison with those of untreated RSF.

  • $SnO_{2}$-based thick film ethanol gas sensors were fabricated on alumina substrates and their ethanol gas sensing characteristics were investigated. The film sintered at $400^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs. showed the highest sensitivity to ethanol gas and the sensitivity of the film to 1000 ppm ethanol gas in air was 97 % at an operating temperature of $250^{\circ}C$. The addition of $Fe_{2}O_{3}$ to $SnO_{2}$ enhanced the sensitivity by changing the type and number of surface acidic/basic sites.

  • The present study was undertaken in order to elucidate the effect of ginseng butanol fraction on ethanol induced hepatic aniline hydroxylase activity in rat. Ginseng butanol fraction increased the hepatic aniline hydroxylase activity which is inhibited by ethanol addition in the enzyme assay system, whereas not shown the ginseng effect in ethanol absence condition in vitro. It was found that ginseng butanol fraction improved the affinity of aniline hydroxylase under presence of ethanol in the reaction mixture. On the contrary ginseng butanol fraction showed significant decreasing effect on aniline hydroxylase activity induced by ethanol administration. These results suggest that ginseng butanol fraction regulate the hepatic aniline hydroxylase activity which is induced by ethanol consumption.

  • Ethanol fermentation by Scccharomyces cervisiae was carried out in the cell recycle filter system with a cheap fabric filter having a pore size of 10${\mu}$m. Maximum biomass concentrations up to 85g/1 were obtained, but in practice operational concentrations were between 50 and 80g/1. Ethanol productivity was 42g/1-hr, with an ethanol concentration of 66g/1 and an ethanol yield of over 86%. Continuous operation was possible by applying periodic backflushing. The ethanol fermentation could be carried out without difficulty at a dilution rate up to 0.8h-1 In order to obtain a high cell concentration and ethanol productivity, development of filter module with the larger filtration area is required.

  • An experimental investigation was conducted to investigate the effect of Bio-ethanol fuel on the engine performance and exhaust emission characteristics under various engine operating conditions. To investigate the effect of bio-ethanol fuel, the commercial 1.6L SI engine equipped with 4 cylinder was tested on EC dynamometer. The engine performance including brake torque, brake specific fuel consumption, and barke specific energy consumption of bio-ethanol fuel was compared to those obtained by pure gasoline. Furthermore, the exhaust emissions were analyzed in terms of regulated exhaust emissions such as unburned hydrocarbon, oxides of nitrogen, and carbon monoxide.Result of this work shows that the effect of blending of ethanol to gasoline caused drastic decrease of emissions under various operating conditions. Also, improved engine performance such as brake torque and brake power were indicated for bio-ethanol fuel.
