  • The physical properties and unsaturated characteristics of acid sulfate soils were investigated and analyzed. As the results of measuring physical properties of the acid sulfate soils obtained around the Ilkwang mine area, the dry unit weight is $1.246t/m^3$ and this soil is classified into the silty sand (SM) by USCS. Soil Water Characteristics Curves (SWCC) of the drying and wetting paths were measured by the automated SWCC apparatus. Also, Hydraulic Conductivity Functions (HCF) of the drying and wetting paths were estimated by the van Geunchten (1980) model which is the most well-known parameter estimation method. The hydraulic conductivity of acid sulfate soils in the dry path was continuously decreased with increasing the matric suction. However, the hydraulic conductivity in the wetting path was decreased relatively small with increasing matric suction and decreased suddenly just before water entry value of matric suction. Meanwhile, the hysteresis phenomenon was occurred in SWCCs and HCFs during the drying and wetting paths.

  • Compaction is a process of increasing soil density using physical energy. It is intended to improve the strength and stiffness of soil. In embankment, degree of compaction affects the construction time, money, also method of soil improvement. In large scale embankment project, difficulties of embankment should change due to uncertainty of settlement. So it is very important to predict the final settlement and factor of safety induced by embankment. In many construction site, there are primarily design of high embankment using in-situ soil. Therefore numerical analyses are necessary for valid evaluation of the settlement prediction. But due to the construction cost and schedule, there were lacking in properties of soil and also limited number of in-situ test were performed. So we proposed the method that can easily estimate the proper soil parameters and suggest the proper method of numerical analysis. From this, two-dimensional finite-difference numerical analysis was conducted to investigate the settlement and factor of safety induced by embankment with various case of compaction rate and embankment height.

  • There are lots of soft ground improvement methods which is consist of different materials. In the analysis and design, composite ground method is usually regarded. Composite ground method considers the area replacement ratio as a key parameter to combine the physical and mechanical characteristics of tow different material. In this study, using composite material consist of three different materials which have different diameters, series of specific gravity test were performed according to KS F 2308, to investigate the applicability of composite ground method. As a result, it is found that composite material which is consist of fine grained soil and granular soil has a high applicability of composite ground method. This result means that, in estimating of ground properties of composite material which is consist of similar fine grained material such as cement mixing etc., composite ground method has a less applicability.

  • Soil represents a substantial component within the global carbon cycle and small changes in the SOC stock may result in large changes of atmospheric CO2 particularly over tens to hundreds of years. In this study, we aim to (i) evaluate the SOC stock in the topsoil 0 - 15 cm from soil physical and chemical characteristics and (ii) find the correlation of SOC and soil organic matter (SOM) for national-scale in South Korea. First of all, based on the characteristics of the soil to calculate the soil hydraulic properties, SOC stock is the SOC mass per unit area for a given depth. It depends on bulk density (BD-g/cm3), SOC content (%), the depth of topsoil (cm), and gravel content (%). Due to insufficient data on BD observation, we establish a correlation between BD and SOC content, sand content, clay content parameter. Next, we present linear and non-linear regression models of BD and the interrelationship between SOC and SOM using a linear regression model and determine the conversion factor for them, comparing with Van Bemmelen 1890's factor value for the country scale. The results obtained, helps managers come up with suitable solutions to conserve land resources.

  • Design of the reinforced roadbed thickness is concerned with safe operation of trains at specified levels of speed, axle load and tonnage. There are two methods for evaluating it. One is using an experimental equation and the other is using elastic theory with considering axle load, material properties of subsoils and allowable elastic settlement. Multi-layered theory is used to determine reinforced roadbed thickness by RTRI. Although their reinforced roadbed thickness is designed with an objective of achieving a minimum standard 2.5mm of settlement on the subgrade surface, it is hardly applied to real design. Li(1994) has suggested the experimental model which design approach is to limit plastic strain and deformations for the design period. It is worth due to adopting soil equivalent number of repeated load application. Moreover, it has been a more advanced method than existing design methods because including resilient modulus of subsoil beneath track, soil deviator stress caused by train axle loads and MGT. In this paper, it is analyzed under domestic track conditions to estimate the reinforced roadbed thickness with different soil types.

  • Consolidation of the ground surrounding the sand piles is delayed by well resistance and smear effect. This study is executed to understand the factors that affect the characteristics of consolidation. This was accomplished by utilizing the estimated and measured values of the soil properties through the monitoring of the ground surrounding the sand piles. When it is assumed that the horizontal coefficient is equal to the vertical coefficient of consolidation, the estimated values is exceedingly similar to the measured values. The properties of the initially disturbed soil by the sand pile installation seemed to improve through the process of consolidation with the passage of time. From the results of the analysis of the settlement measurement, the measured values occurred about 60~90% of the predicted values. Considering the initial radical compression deformation, according to the theory of cavity expansion, the difference between the two appears to be in good agreement. In this study, to understand the behavioral characteristics of the ground surrounding the sand piles requires estimation through considering the initial radial compression as well as smear effect of the soil disturbance and well resistance.

  • The procedure that combines the result of infiltration analysis into stability analysis based on the limit equilibrium method is widely used to evaluate the impact of rainfall infiltration on slope stability. Accurate prediction of rainfall infiltration is essential to the prediction of landslides caused by rainfall, requires to obtain accurate unsaturated hydraulic properties of the soil. Among the unsaturated hydraulic characteristics of the soil, the importance of the soil-water characteristic curve describing the retained water characteristics of the soil is relatively well known and the measurement by test method to obtain the SWCC is gradually increasing. However, it takes a lot of time and expenses to experimentally measure the unsaturated conductivity characteristics of the soil. Therefore, it is common practice to estimate the hydraulic conductivity function from the SWCC. Although it is widely known that the SWCC has a great influence on rainfall infiltration, studies on the effect of the hydraulic conductivity function estimated from the SWCC on rainfall infiltration are very limited. In this study, we explained how the estimation model of the hydraulic conductivity function affects rainfall infiltration and slope stability analysis. To this end, one-dimensional infiltration analysis and slope stability analysis were conducted by using the data on the SWCC of weathered granite soil widely distributed in Korea. The applicability of each estimation model is discussed through review of the analysis results.

  • A damage estimation method for monopile support structure of offshore wind turbine using modal properties and committee of neural networks is presented for effective structural health monitoring. An analytical model for a monopile support structure is established, and the natural frequencies, mode shapes, and mode shape slopes for the support structure are calculated considering soil condition and added mass. The input to the neural networks consists of the modal properties and the output is composed of the stiffness indices of the support structure. Multiple neural networks are constructed and each individual network is trained independently with different initial synaptic weights. Then, the estimated stiffness indices from different neural networks are averaged. Ten damage cases are estimated using the proposed method, and the identified damage locations and severities agree reasonably well with the exact values. The accuracy of the estimation can be improved by applying the committee of neural networks which is a statistical approach averaging the damage indices in the functional space.

  • The reliable evaluation of the coefficient of variation (COV) of soil properties is required for the determination of adequate design values and the application of a probabilistic method for the design of geotechnical structures. In this paper, the applicability of methods for estimating the standard deviation, such as the. Three-Sigma Rule and a statistical method, is evaluated by using site investigation data of the Songdo area. It is found that the Three-Sigma Rule provides similar results to those of a statistical method when using $N_{\sigma}$=6 for the property with small variability and $N_{\sigma}$=4.2~5.3 for the property with large variability. It is also observed that, for the undrained shear strength that has an increasing trend with depth, a $N_{\sigma}$ value of 4 is adequate for the evaluation of the variability by the Three-Sigma Rule. The COVs of soil properties determined in this paper could be used in the estimation of the confidence interval and characteristic values of soil properties.

  • In case of the lateral movement accurring at soft ground where a row of piles are installed, the crown failure at external arch zone of soil arching is firstly developed, and the cap failure at wedge zone in front of piles is lastly developed. Therefore, the lateral earth pressure acting on a row of piles due to soil movement should be calculated in each condition of crown and cap failures around piles. A theoretical equation of crown failure can be proposed using a cylindrical cavity expansion theory. The theoretical equation of crown failure is mainly affected by two factors. One is related to soil properties such as internal friction angle, cohesion and horizontal pressure, and the other is related to pile factors such as diameter, installation interval. Meanwhile, the yield range of lateral earth pressure is established in the estimation of theoretical equation based on crown and cap failures around piles. The theoretical values based on crown and cap failures are compared with the experimental values. The experimental values are located in the range proposed by theoretical values. Thus, it is confirmed that the theoretical values proposed in the study are very reasonable.
