The Development of an Product Cost Estimation System at the Product Design Stage (제품 설계 단계에서의 제품 원가 추정 시스템 개발)

  • Presented in this paper is the development of an product cost estimation system at the product design stage. The efficient cost estimation function at the design stage is essential for the cost reduction activities through the entire product life cycle. For this purpose, it is necessary to establish a systematic working procedure, and to develop information system for managing a great deal of production and product-related data required for the cost estimation. The developed system has the capability of estimating a cost of assembly type products as well as unit-item type products. As proposed system is based on the variant approach, it can be used easily at an early design stage without the need for detail design information. Also, this system is integrated with legacy PDM (Product Data Management) and ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system for fast. accurate and easy product cost estimation. The estimated cost includes material cost, overhead cost as well as labor cost.

  • This paper deals with the damage assessment for isolators of base-isolated building systems considering the torsion-coupling (TC) effect by establishing damage indices. The damage indices can indicate the reduction in lateral stiffness of the isolator story as explicit formulas in terms of modal parameters. In addition, the damage location, expressed in terms of the estimated damage index and eccentricities before and after damage, is also presented. Numerical analysis shows that the proposed algorithms are applicable for general base-isolated multi-story TC buildings. A procedure from the analysis of seismic response to the implementation of damage indices is demonstrated by using a numerical case. A system identification technique is employed to extract modal parameters from seismic responses of a building. Results show that the proposed indices are capable of detecting the occurrence of damage and preliminarily estimating the location of damaged isolator.

  • In this paper we present a theoretical framework for the network design with delay QoS guarantee to a voice at the packet level. Especially, we propose a method for estimating the bandwidth at the ingress edge routers accommodating the voice connections and data sessions in the next-generation If network. First, we describe network architecture for VoIP (Voice over IP) services in the NGN (Next Generation Network). After that, we propose a procedure for dimensioning the bandwidth at the output port of a router that accommodates voice and data traffic using the non-preemptive queuing system with strict priority service scheme. Via numerical experiments we illustrate the implication of the proposition.

  • This paper presents an algorithm for calculation of harmonic distribution in distribution systems. In distribution systems, most state variables are not given explicitly. To calculate the harmonic distribution in distribution systems, state estimation is necessary. In this paper, power usage and harmonic current injection is estimated for each node from practically available data. The estimating procedure is illustrated by examples.

  • Cast duplex stainless steels are extensively used for primary pressure boundary components. These components are, however, embrittled due to the precipitation of $\alpha$' phase by spinodal decomposition and other processes when exposed to reactor operating temperature for a design lifetime or life extension conditions. This report presents a procedure for estimating the current condition and the residual life of safety-related stainless steel components by using ANL database and correlations. The database of Charpy impact energy suggests that CF-8M grade is the most susceptible to thermal aging and CF-3 grade is the least. Thus, the integrity of CF-8M alleys may be degraded seriously and the degree of deterioration may exceed acceptance limit after several years of service in the nuclear reactors.

  • The method of delays is widely used fur reconstructing chaotic attractors from experimental observations. Many studies have used a fixed delay time ${\tau}_d$ as the embedding dimension m is increased, but this is not necessarily the best choice for obtaining good convergence of the correlation dimension. Recently, some researchers have suggested that it is better to fix the delay time window ${\tau}_w$ instead. Unfortunately, ${\tau}_w$ cannot be estimated using either the autocorrelation function or the mutual information, and no standard procedure for estimating ${\tau}_w$has yet emerged. However, a new technique, called the C-C method, can be used to estimate either ${\tau}_d{\;}or{\;}{\tau}_w$. Using this method, we show that, for small data sets, fixing ${\tau}_w$, rather than ${\tau}_d$, does indeed lead to a more rapid convergence of the correlation dimension as the embedding dimension m is increased.

  • Cox's proportional hazards model (PHM) has been widely applied in the analysis of lifetime data, and it can be characterized by the baseline hazard function and covariates influencing systems' lifetime, where the covariates describe operating environments (e.g. temperature, pressure, humidity). In this article, we consider the constant baseline hazard function and a discrete random variable of a covariate. The estimation procedure is developed in a parametric framework when there are not only complete data but also incomplete one. The Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm is employed to handle the incomplete data problem. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the accuracy and some properties of the estimation results.

SIMULATION EFFICIENCY FOR MULTI-PRODUCTION MODEL

  • Through a simulation experiment, often an experimenter is concerned with estimating the system parameters of the linear model consisting of m design points from the outputs oft the simulation model. To improve the estimation of the system parameters and reliability of these estimators, appropriate simulation techniques have been developed. For the first order linear model, Schruben and Margolin (1978) exploited the random number assignment rules which uses a combination of common random numbers and antithetic streams in a simulation experiment designed to estimate the system parameters when the design matrix of simulation model admits orthogonal blocking into two blocks. Nozari, Arnold and Pegden (1984) developed a method for appliying the method of control variates to the situation of the linear model having multiple design points. This talk deals with a different way of utilizing controls under the correlation induction strategy of Schruben and Margolin's to improve the simulation efficiency, and presents a procedure for obtaining the estimators of the system parameters analytically. Simulation results on a selected simulation model indicate a promising evidence that a proposed method may yield better results than Schruben and Margolin's method.

Survey Methodology for Estimating Patronage of High-Speed Rail in Korea

  • High-speed rail study needs to focus on passenger movements as a key element of the planning process. A particular challenge is obtaining comprehensive information on high-speed rail passenger movements. A national preference stated survey was conducted from October to November of 2011 to meet this challenge through direct personal interviews of travelers between Seoul and Busan (the so called Kyung-Bu corridor). Over 40 interviewers were hired and trained to conduct personal interviews at several stations along locations within Kyung-Bu Seoul and Busan corridor. A total of 4,550 travelers were interviewed, furnishing an extensive database on high-speed rail passenger movements. The methodology and procedure employed to collect the national data for Korean high-speed train KTX are described. Specific issues investigated include survey design, questionnaire and strategy. Lessons learned from the high-speed rail passenger movement study provide insights for other countries contemplating similar high-speed rail studies.

Depth estimation for surface-breaking cracks in steel-fiber reinforced concrete using ultrasonic surface waves

  • A USW based diagnostic procedure is presented for estimating the depth of surface-breaking cracks. The diagnosis is demonstrated on seven lab-scale SFRC beam specimens, which are subjected to the CMOD controlled three-point bending test to create real bending cracks. Then, the recorded multiple ultrasonic signals are examined with the signal processing techniques, including wavelet transform and two-dimensional Fourier transform, to investigate the relationships between the crack depth and two diagnostic indices, namely the attenuation coefficient and dispersion index (DI). Finally, the reliabilities of these indices for depth estimation are verified with the visually measured crack depths as well as the crack features obtained with a digital image processing algorithm. It is found that the DI outperforms the attenuation coefficient in depth estimation, where this index displays good agreement with the visual inspection for 86% of the inspected specimens.
