Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a bergamot essential oil-inhalation on chronic pain after surgery for lumbar spinal stenosis. Methods: Fifty-two subjects were randomly assigned to the experimental (bergamot essential oil-inhalation) and control (almond oil-inhalation) group. All patients understood the purpose of this study and a written informed consent for the study was obtained. Results: Bergamot essential oil-inhalation was conducted during twenty minutes. Visual analog scale, blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate were measured before and after treatment in the two groups. The visual analog scale score, heart rate, and respiratory rate in bergamot essential oil-inhalation group were significantly lower than those in almond oil-inhalation group. However, there was no significant difference in systolic and diastolic blood pressure between the two groups. Conclusion: Therefore, bergamot essential oil-inhalation is effective in alleviating pain, heart rate, and respiratory rate. These results suggest that bergamot essential oil-inhalation can be a useful method for the relief of chronic pain during the treatment after spinal surgery.
By far, studies on the effect of oral administration of peppermint essential oil on blood pressure are not consistent, increasing or decreasing. And the effect of inhalation of peppermint essential oil on blood pressure was not reported. This study was designed to clarify the effect of peppermint essential oil inhalation on the blood pressure and autonomic nervous system. Blood pressure and heart rate variability (HRV) as an indicator of autonomic nervous system activity were measured. The systolic and diastolic blood pressure was not changed significantly by inhalation of peppermint essential oil. Standard deviation of normal to normal (SDNN), a parameter of total activity of autonomic nervous system also was not changed significantly. High frequency (HF) power level, an indicator of parasympathetic nervous system activity was not changed by peppermint. These results indicate that action mechanism of peppermint essential oil on blood pressure is different by the method of administration, oral or inhalation.
This study investigated the stimulative or sedative effects of inhaling fragrant essential oils (EOs) by using a forced swimming test (FST) with mice. This behavioral test is commonly used to measure the effects of antidepressant drugs. The inhalation by mice of EOs, such as ginger oil (p<0.05), thyme oil (p<0.05), peppermint oil (p<0.05), and cypress oil (p<0.01) resulted in 5% to 22% reduction of immobility. The same results were achieved when over-agitation was artificially induced in the mice by an intraperitoneal injection of caffeine (a psycho-stimulant). In contrast, inhalation of some EOs by the mice resulted in increased immobility. To evaluate more correctly the sedative effects of EOs, the immobility of over-agitated mice induced with caffeine was ascertained after the inhalation of various EOs. Inhalation of lavender oil (p<0.01) and hyssop oil (p<0.01) increased the immobile state in mice that were treated with caffeine. The results of this study indicate that the inhalation of essential oils may induce stimulative or sedative effects in mice.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Aromatherapy, inhalhtion method using Clarysage essential oil on stress in middle-age women. The study design was a one-group pretest-posttest design. The subject were 44 middle-age women with stress in inhalation method of Clarysage essential oil was 2 drops of oil on tissue at 10, 14, 18, before bed for 2 weeks. The study was carried out from August 1 to September 20, 2002. The scale used in the study was the stress scale of Park, Sun Young(1999). The study data was analyzed by frepuency, percent age and t-test using SPSS Win 10.0 program. Result were as follows : 1. The score of physical stress scale was significantly decresed after use of inhalation of Clarysage essential oil. 2. The score of psychological stress scale was significantly decresed after use of inhalation of Clarysage essential oil. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that inlalation method using Clarysage essential oil is positively supported in stress reduction in middle-aged women.

The present study was designed to evaluate central inhibitory effects of an essential oil from Acori graminei Rhizoma (AGR), the dry rhizomes of Acorus gramineus Solander (Araceae) upon fragrance inhalation (aroma therapy). Preinhalation of an essential oil of AGR markedly delayed the appearance of pentylenetetrazole-induced convulsion. Furthermore, the inhalation of an essential oil of AGR impressively inhibited the activity of ${\gamma}$-aminobutyric acid (GABA) transaminase, a degradating enzyme for GABA as inhalation period is lengthened. The principle purpose of this research is to figure out whether the inhalation of Wood Essential oil (Chamaecyparis obtusa) affect not only human beings' concentration for surroundings but also change as to status of feelings. total number of subjects for this experimental are determined to be 66 (men 44 and women 22) among 85 adults who agreed to participate in this experiment after excluding 19 participants who were not able to smell scent due to flu and nasal inflammation. After both experimental group and control group being measured referring to their status of mood such as concentration, depression, vigor, fatigue, confusion, tension and anger, the experimental group is offered to get a piece of cotton that includes Wood Essential oil and they are asked to inhale it for 5 min. On the other hand, control group is offered to wait for the experimental group finishing inhaling wood Essential oil for 5 min. After 5 min, the status of mood from both groups were measured again. simultaneously, I conducted a survey targeting experimental group to see what their preferences are like regarding scent of wood essential oil. The experiment shows that the status of experimental group's concentration is improved about 0.94 point when compared to control group's. Moreover, Total mood disturbance is lower than control group's. Therefore it is proved that the inhalation of wood Essential oil alleviates overall status of mood. according to the analyses result of favor to scent for wood essential oil from experimental group, some of them who were positive got much better improvement when it comes to concentration and far more relieved on their feelings than those who weren't. Based from this result, it is definitely confirmed that there is a Phytoncide's psychophysiological effect which transcends the Placebo Effect generated by Phytoncide's positive image.
The essential oil of Nardostachys jatamansi (Valerianaceae), which has been used for a long time in aroma therapy, was investigated after inhalation or oral administration for its analgesic effect, anticonvulsant action, hypnotic effect and in vitro inhibitory activity on monoamine oxidase. This fragrance oil showed a significant analgesic effect in the phenylquinone-induced .writhing test, suppressed the convulsion induced by pentylenetetrazole and lengthened the pentobarbital-induced sleeping time in a time-dependent manner after fragrance inhalation or dose-independently by oral administration. Its inhibitory activity on monoamine oxidase was remarkable, showing $49.4\%$ inhibition at a concentration of 5.0 mg/ml. Six new terpenes with seven known compounds were detected by our GC-MS analytical conditions used. As a result, the essential oil fragrance of Nardostachys jatamansi would be clinically useful for a sedative by either inhalation or oral administration.
Objectives : The application of DNCB (1-chloro-2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene) can cause cellular immunity allergic reaction such as erythema or edema on NC/Nga mice and combinational function of cells participating in immunity increase inflammatory mediator. In this study, the effects of cypress essential oil on NC/Nga mice have been assessed. Methods : Male SPF NC/Nga mice aged 8 weeks have been used for atopic dermatitis induction skin. 1% DNCB was applied on ears and backs of which hair was removed using clipper on $1^{st}$ day and 0.4% DNCB was applied three times a week for 3 weeks. In this study, cypress essential oil has been treated 1 time a day for 3 weeks after application of DNCB to induce atopic dermatitis on skin for further experiments. Results : This study shows that inhalation or application of cypress essential oil reduced edema in ears and the thickness of epidermis induced by DNCB treatment. And it can be known that treatment of cypress essential oil inhibited mast cell proliferation and reduced IgE level similar to that of the negative control especially when cypress essential oil was inhaled by the mice. Synthetic oil showed the effects lower than those of cypress essential oil. Conclusions : Inhalation or direct application of cypress essential oil on skin reduced IgE level in blood and prohibits the proliferation of mast cell, from which it can be known that cypress essential oil can be effectively used to reduce the symptoms of atopic dermatitis.

The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of Chamaecyparis obtusa essential oil on the activity of autonomic nervous system. Heart rate variability (HRV), as an indicator of autonomic nervous system activity and blood pressure were measured before and after inhalation of Chamaecyparis obtusa essential oil. The systolic blood pressure was decreased by inhalation of Chamaecyparis obtusa essential oil (p<0.05). The diastolic blood pressure was not changed significantly by Chamaecyparis obtusa. High frequency (HF) power level was not changed but High frequency/Low frequency (HF/LF) ratio was decreased by Chamaecyparis obtusa essential oil (p<0.05), meaning that parasympathetic nervous system activity was not affected but sympathetic nervous system activity was decreased. These results indicate that Chamaecyparis obtusa essential oil has a modulatory effect on the autonomic nervous system activity.
Objective : The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of Cyperus rotundus L. essential oil on relaxation in highly stressed volunteers with heart rate variability(HRV) and electroencephalography(EEG). Methods : 11 highly stressed volunteers participated in this study. The volunteers were examined with HRV and EEG before and after inhalation of Cyperus rotundus L. essential oil. Results : After smelling Cyperus rotundus L. essential oil, mean RR(mean of RR intervals) was incresed significantly(p<0.01), mean HRV(mean of heart rate), HF(high frequency) were decreased significantly(p<0.01). norm LF(low frequency), LF/HF ratio were decreased significantly(p<0.05), norm HF(normalized high frequency) was increased significantly(p<0.05) on HRV. After smelling Cyperus rotundus L. essential oil, relative ${\theta}$ power was decreased significantly(p<0.05) at P3(left parietal) and relative ${\alpha}$ power was increased significantly(p<0.05) at Fp1(left prefrontal), Fp2(right prefrontal) and relative ${\beta}$ power was decreased significantly(p<0.05) at Fp1(left prefrontal) and relative ${\gamma}$ power was decreased significantly(p<0.05) at Fp1(left prefrontal) on EEG. Conclusions : This results show that inhalation of Cyperus rotundus L. essential oil effects on relaxation and decreasing stress.
