  • The essential oil fraction was obtained from the leaves and flowers of Artemisia iwayomogi (Compositae) by steam distillation, and its main component, vulgarone B, was isolated by column chromatography. RAW 264.7 cells were used to investigate the anti-inflammatory properties of A. iwayomogi and vulgarone B. Cell viability was determined by MTT assay after treatment with various dilutions of the compounds. In addition, several assays were used to determine the effects of A. iwayomogi essential oil components on immune stimulation. Nitric oxide production in cells activated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was evaluated by reaction with Griess reagent. Both vulgarone B and the essential oil fraction of A. iwayomogi inhibited the production of nitric oxide. The effects on various cytokines released from the cells were also measured using ELISA. The production of prostaglandin $E_2$ was significantly decreased by treatment with A. iwayomogi oils. LPS-induced IL-$1{\beta}$ and IL-6 production were also decreased in a dose-dependent manner, but no significant effect on TNF-${\alpha}$ was observed at the concentrations tested. Finally, Western blot analysis revealed that A. iwayomogi oils reduced the levels of COX-2 and iNOS.

  • Essential hypertension has been considered as multifactorial disease resulted from the interaction of both environmental and genetic factors. The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) plays an important role in the regulation of blood pressure homeostasis. Recently, a homologue of angiotensin I converting enzyme, ACE2 has been focused on as a candidate gene of essential hypertension in the experiments using animal model and human being. In this study, we carried out an association study in order to clarify the relationship between the A 1075G polymorphism in the ACE2 gene and essential hypertension in Korean subjects. Because this polymorphism is located on human chromosome X, the statistical analysis for each gender was performed separately. There were no significant differences in allele distribution of the A 1075G polymorphism in the ACE2 gene between normotensives and hypertensives in the both gender groups, respectively. However, this polymorphism was significantly associated with systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) values in only female groups (P< 0.05). Thus, these results may suggest the probable role of ACE2 gene in the inter-individual susceptibility of female group to blood pressure variability.

  • Functional safety is part of the overall safety relating to the equipment under control (EUC) and the EUC control system that depends on the correct functioning of the electrical/electronic/programmable electronic (E/E/PE) safety-related systems. Since the complexity of the medical equipment is increased, manufactures have to obtain functional safety as well as basic safety. This study proposes a perspective for applying functional safety to medical equipment. The research is carried out with respect to overall safety life-cycle of functional safety and essential performance of the medical equipment. The relationship between functional safety and essential performance is identified centered on the safety function. The essential performance using E/E/PE systems is defined as a safety function of functional safety. This approach is applied to a ultrasound imaging system as a case study.

  • Essential hypertension results from the complex interaction between genetic and environmental factors. A C825T polymorphism of the gene encoding G-protein ${\beta}3$ subunit (GNB3), associated with enhanced G-protein coupled signaling and increased $Na^+-H^+$ exchanger, has been implicated in the development of essential hypertension in several human populations, especially in Caucasian population. We examined the disease relevance of this candidate gene by performing an association study in a study group of Korean heritage. Participants comprised 109 essential hypertensives and 109 normotensives, respectively. Genotyping was performed with PCR-BsaJI restriction digestion method. Observed genotype frequencies were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium in all groups. Genotype and allele frequencies did not differ significantly between normotensives and essential hypertensives (P>0.05). However, the serum total cholesterol (TC) and LDL-cholesterol levels were significantly higher in subjects with the TT genotype compared to those with the CC or CT genotypes in normotensives of our study subjects (P<0.05). Thus, these results suggest that GNB3/C825T polymorphism might be significantly associated with abnormality in serum lipid metabolism.

  • The present study was developed in order to evaluate the effect of five essential oils on the workers of the leaf-cutting ants; Atta sexdens rubropilosa and Acromyrmex subterraneus molestans by contact with a treated surface and ingestion with a treated leaves.. The essential oils of cinnamon, clove and mustard had generally more effective with 5, 10 and 15% concentrations after 24, 48, 72 and 96 h against workers of A. sexdens rubropilosa and A. subterraneus molestans in contact bioassay, but mustard was the most effective in ingestion bioassay on both species. On the other hand, there was no significant difference among the essential oils with 1% concentration and control after 24, 48 and 72 h of treatment in contact and ingestion bioassays against workers of A. sexdens rubropilosa . However, Andiroba oil had less efficiency values in all concentrations been used. Therefore, the essential oils of mustard, cinnamon and clove have contact and ingestion effects on workers of A. sexdens rubropilosa and A. subterraneus molestans, and may be promising on the leaf-cutting ant control.

  • Peppermint (Mentha piperita L.) belongs to a member of the mint family (Lamiaceae) and is widely used in food, cosmetics and medicines. This study was carried to investigate the variation of essential oil content and its composition during callus subculture of M. piperita. For callus induction from the leaf explant of peppermint, the basal medium was supplemented with various concentrations of 2, 4-D. The best callus induction rate (93%) of M. piperita. was obtained in MS medium containing 2 mg/l 2, 4-D. The induced peppermint callus maintained on Lin-Staba medium were studied during a period of 20th subcultures for the stability of essential oil production. Growth rates of peppermint callus increased during prolonged subculture. However, there was a progressive decrease of essential oil content and unstability of monoterpene productions when callus cultures were serially subcultured.
