  • For the research of the natural antioxidant from marine sources, an antioxidant-producing marine actinomycetes was isolated from sea water in Jeju coastal area. The strain was identified based on 16S rDNA sequencing, the morphology by a method of scanning electron microscopy, physiological and biochemical characteristics and cellular fatty acid analysis. The isolated strain ACT-1 cell size was $0.5\sim1.0{\mu}m$ and gram positive, aerobic, nonmotile, substrate mycelium are red and gray aerial mycelium. 16S rRNA sequence analysis showed that were Gram-positive bacteria grouped on Streptomyces genus. Results of cellular fatty acid analysis showed that major cellular fatty acids were $C_{15:0}$ anteiso (39.33%), $C_{16:1}$ cis 9 (11.96%), $C_{16:0}$ (13.08%) and $C_{17:0}$ anteiso (10.99%). Finally, strain was identified Streptomyces sp. ACT-1. The antioxidant activity of methanol extract from Streptomyces sp. ACT-1 was evaluated by measuring DPPH, hydroxyl, and alkyl radical scavenging activity using an electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometer. DPPH radical scavenging activity of SBME-1 (Streptomyces broth methanol extract) was 67% at $1,000{\mu}g$/ml. Hydroxyl radical scavenging activity of SBME-1 was 84% at $500{\mu}g$/ml. Alkyl radical scavenging activity of SBME-1 was 71% at $1,000{\mu}g$/ml.

  • The rifampicin-resistant strain E9-302 of Edwardsiella ictaluri strain 669 (WT) was generated by continuous passage on BHI agar plates containing increasing concentrations of rifampicin. E9-302 was attenuated significantly by 119 times to zebrafish Danio rerio compared to WT in terms of the 50% lethal dose (LD50). Zebrafish vaccinated with E9-302 via intraperitoneal (IP) injection at a dose of 1 × 103 CFU/fish had relative percentage survival (RPS) rates of 85.7% when challenged with wild-type E. ictaluri via IP 14 days post-vaccination (dpv). After 14 days of primary vaccination with E9-302 via immersion (IM) at a dose of 4 × 107 CFU/ml, a booster IM vaccination with E9-302 at a dose of 2 × 107 CFU/ml exhibited 65.2% RPS against challenge with wild-type E. ictaluri via IP 7 days later. These results indicated that the rifampicin-resistant attenuated strain E9-302 had potential as a live vaccine against E. ictaluri infection. A previously unreported amino acid site change at position 142 of the RNA polymerase (RNAP) β subunit encoded by the gene rpoB associated with rifampicin resistance was identified. Analysis of the whole-genome sequencing results revealed multiple missense mutations in the virulence-related genes esrB and sspH2 in E9-302 compared with WT, and a 189 bp mismatch in one gene, whose coding product was highly homologous to glycosyltransferase family 39 protein. This study preliminarily explored the molecular mechanism underlying the virulence attenuation of rifampicin-resistant strain E9-302 and provided a new target for the subsequent study of the pathogenic mechanism of E. ictaluri.

  • (${\eta}$5-Cyclopentadienyl)(${\eta}$6-1,2,3,4-tetramethyl-1,4-dibora-2,5-cyclohexadiene)Ni (5) was synthe-sizedas a main product by the reaction of cyclopentadienyl(carbonyl)nickel dimer and 1,2,3,4-tetramethyl-1,4-di-bora-2-cyclohexene (1). Di-allyl nickel reacted with 2,3-diethyl-1,4-di-methyl-1,4-dibora-2-cyclohexene (2) at -20$^{\circ}C$ to give bis(${\eta}$6-2,3-diethyl- 1,4-dimethyl-1,4-dibora-2,5-cyclohexadiene)nickel (6) in the yield of 15%. By the reaction of di-allyl nickel and 2,3-dimethyl-1,4-diethoxy-1,4-di- bora-2-cyclohexene (3) at -20$^{\circ}C$ bis[${\eta}$6-2,3-dim-ethyl-1,4-diethoxy-1,4-di- bora-2,5-cyclohexadiene]nickel (7) was obtained in 22% yield. These double-decker complexes were difficult to separate because of their unstabilities and were identified by ESR, NMR, MS and ele-mental analysis, etc.

  • Bone pain in a child could be associated with cancer as an initial manifestation of the disease. The childhood malignancies that frequently present bone pain are leukemia, neuroblastoma, and primary bone tumors such as osteosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma. Persistent bone or joint pain associated with swelling, mass, or limitation of motion implies underlying serious causes. Systemic manifestations such as lymphadenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly, fever, fatigue, night sweat, and laboratory abnormalities are also suggestive of malignancy. The index of suspicion tends to be low since less than 1% of children who complain of bone pain are diagnosed as cancer. Nonetheless, pediatricians should be alert to the possibilities of cancer since early detection and prompt treatment might reduce mortality.

  • Marine red algae of genus Laurencia are becoming the most important resources to produce unique natural metabolites with wide bioactivities. However, reports related to Laurencia undulata, an edible species used as folk herb, are rarely found to date. In this research, 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfural (5-HMF) was isolated and characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) from Laurencia undulata as well as other marine algae. The following characteristics of 5-HMF were systematically evaluated: its antioxidant activities, such as typical free-radicals scavenging in vitro by electron spin resonance spectrometry (ESR) and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging; membrane protein oxidation; oxidative enzyme myeloperoxidase (MPO) inhibition; as well as expressions of antioxidative enzymes glutathione (GSH) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) on the gene level using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method. The results demonstrated that 5-HMF could be developed as a novel marine natural antioxidant or potential precursor for practical applications in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical fields.

  • Vanadium containing MFI type zeolites have been prepared hydrothermally or by the impregnation method with $NH_4VO_3$ solution after dealumination of HZSM-5. Incorporation of vanadium into the framework of zeolite has been demonstrated by XRD, DTA, FT-IR and ESR analyses. Upon $NH_4VO_3$ impregnation and calcination of dealuminated zeolite, vanadium substitution into the framework could be performed like a hydrothermally synthesized zeolite. Vanadium in zeolite is able to pass redox cycles at high temperatures, and it is shown that vanadium is probably fixed and atomically dispersed in the structure of zeolite. The catalytic benzene hydroxylation, hexanes and alcohols oxidation were used for evaluating the properties of vanadium incorporated MFI zeolite.
