  • To achieve synchronized motion between a wearable robot and a human user, the redundancy must be resolved in the same manner by both systems. According to the seven DOF (Degrees of Freedom) human arm model composed of the shoulder, elbow, and wrist joints, positioning and orientating the wrist in space is a task requiring only six DOFs. Due to this redundancy, a given task can be completed by multiple arm configurations, and thus there exists no unique mathematical solution to the inverse kinematics. This paper presents analysis on the kinematic and dynamic aspect of the human arm movement and their effect on the redundancy resolution of the human arm based on a seven DOF manipulator model. The redundancy of the arm is expressed mathematically by defining the swivel angle. The final form of swivel angle can be represented as a linear combination of two different swivel angles achieved by optimizing different cost functions based on kinematic and dynamic criteria. The kinematic criterion is to maximize the projection of the longest principal axis of the manipulability ellipsoid for the human arm on the vector connecting the wrist and the virtual target on the head region. The dynamic criterion is to minimize the mechanical work done in the joint space for each two consecutive points along the task space trajectory. As a first step, the redundancy based on the kinematic criterion will be thoroughly studied based on the motion capture data analysis. Experimental results indicate that by using the proposed redundancy resolution criterion in the kinematic level, error between the predicted and the actual swivel angle acquired from the motor control system is less than five degrees.

  • Since impulse-radio-based ultra wideband (IR-UWB) do not use carrier frequency but use very short pulse to transmit data it sends data not continuously but discretely and this feature gives the potential to reduce collision in multi-user environment. In this paper, we analyse characteristic of IR-UWB and propose a new collision paradigm, Collision Distribution which changes collision level from packet to pulse. In Collision Distribution mechanical each node sends data with its own pulse interval in random time, distributed manner. It prevents packet drop due to packet collision. We show that Collision Distribution can reduce packet error and can provide real time packet transmission with analysis.

  • A quantitative analysis of the decreasing rate of the monomer and increasing rate of the polymerization was made by monitoring radiation level increments using Raman spectroscopy within the therapeutic radiation range for a normoxic polymethacrylic acid gel dosimeter. The gel dosimeter was synthesized by stirring materials such as gelatin, distilled water, methacrylic acid, hydroquinone and tetrakis phosphonium chloride at $50^{\circ}C$, and the synthesized gel was contained in a 10- mm diameter and 32-mm high vial to conduct measurement. 24 hours after gel synthesis, it was irradiated from 0 Gy to 20 Gy by 2 Gy using a Co-60 radiotherapy unit. With use of the Cryo FE-SEM, structural changes in the 0 Gy and 10 Gy gel dosimeters were investigated. The Raman spectra were acquired using 532-nm laser as the excitation source. In accordance with fitting the changes in C-COOH stretching (801 $cm^{-1}$), C=C stretching (1639 $cm^{-1}$) and vinyl $CH_2$ stretching (3114 $cm^{-1}$) vibrational modes for monomer and $CH_2$ bending vibrational mode (1451 $cm^{-1}$) for polymer, sensitive parameter S for each mode was calculated. The values of S for monomer bands and polymer band were ranged in $6.0{\pm}2.6$ Gy and $7.2{\pm}2.3$ Gy, respectively, which shows a relatively good conformity of the decreasing rate of monomer and the increasing rate of polymerization within the range of error.

  • Short-range wireless communication and networking technologies are becoming increasingly important in enabling useful mobile applications. for example, ZigBee technology is expected to provide low cost and low power connectivity for equipment that needs battery life as long as several months to several years. In addition, ZigBee can be implemented in mesh networks larger than is possible with Bluetooth. The main features of this ZigBee standard are network flexibility, low cost, very low power consumption, and low data rate in an adhoc self-organizing network among fixed, portable and moving devices. Home network/Home automation is one of the key market areas for Zigbee, with an example of a simple network This paper investigates the effect of short range wireless channel on the performance of Zigbee system and DSSS-BPSK signal transmission in AWGN, interference and Rician fading environments. And we investigate performance degradation due to interference and fading effects in short range wireless channel. In particular, the impacts of the fading and interference level on the bit error probability is shown in BER performance figures.

  • There is a constant demand for hull variation related to ship design. Various input variables are generally given to achieve the objective functions assigned by each variation process. When dealing with geometric shapes accompanied by nonlinear operations during the variation process, vague relationships or uncertainties among input variables are commonly observed. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to identify those uncertainty factors in advance. A method to modify the shape of a closed hull form with a new area and a centroid had been introduced as a new process of hull variation. Since uncertainty between input variables still existed in the method, however, it was not easy for the user to enter the area and the corresponding centroid. To overcome this problem, a method is presented in this paper to provide the feasible region of centroids for a given area. By utilizing the concept and techniques used in the statistics such as the number of samples, probability, margin error, and level of confidence, this method generates the distribution of possible centroids along the regression curve. The result shows that the method helps the user to choose an appropriate input value following his or her design intention.

  • Geographic Information Systems(GISs) generally use a very large amount of spatial data. and are implemented on various software and hardware system. If it is impossible to exchange the spatial data efficiently among the different hardware, software, and operation systems, data sharing will be very difficult and duplicated storage & management of the spatial data will result in a great economic loss. To solve such problems, a national organization established a national standard for GIS and constructed spatial databases at the national level. In Korea, SDTS(Spatial Data Transfer Standard) is selected as a national standard for the common data transfer format. In this paper, we design and implement a SDTS Data Management System which can support display, insertion, update, deletion of SDTS data, extraction and creation of a specified area, error checking and reporting, setting and verification of a SDTS profile through the GUI (Graphic User Interface) environment. Hereafter, as GIS industry is continually activated and a demand for the SDTS data increases, a requirement for analysis and trust of the SDTS data will grow bigger, so the necessity of the SDTS Data Management System developed in this paper will also grow rapidly.

  • A great variety of handheld device are coming onto the market. Some have advanced features compacted into very small sized hardware. In order to maximize the capability of these devices, we need to understand the characteristics of different input methods and utilize them in a sufficient way. Our study aims to understand characteristics of each device, so that we can design user interfaces more effectively. Two experiments were conducted to compare target pointing performance with a pen and with a hardware key on small displays. In experiment 1, we examined participants' performance of target pointing with both input methods at different target sizes. It was found that pen operation is more erroneous than key based operation when target size is smaller than 5mm, but at a target size of 5mm, the error rate decreased to the same level as for key input. In experiment 2, we examined the effect of the number of targets. The results showed, with a target size of 5mm, the pen could point to targets quicker than with key input, when the distance to the target exeeds a path length of 3 steps.

  • A watershed model was constructed using Hydrological Simulation Program Fortran to predict the water temperature at major tributaries of Nakdong River basin, Korea. Water temperature is one of the most fundamental indices used to determine the nature of an aquatic environment. Most processes of an aquatic environment such as saturation level of dissolved oxygen, the decay rate of organic matter, the growth rate of phytoplankton and zooplankton are affected by temperature. The heat flux to major reservoirs and tributaries was analyzed to simulate water temperature accurately using HSPF model. The annual mean heat flux of solar radiation was estimated to $150{\sim}165W/m^2$, longwave radiation to $-48{\sim}-113W/m^2$, evaporative heat loss to $-39{\sim}-115W/m^2$, sensible heat flux to $-13{\sim}-22W/m^2$, precipitation heat flux to $2{\sim}4W/m^2$, bed heat flux to $-24{\sim}22W/m^2$ respectively. The model was calibrated at major reservoir and tributaries for a three-year period (2008 to 2010). The deviation values (Dv) of water temperature ranged from -6.0 to 3.7%, Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency(NSE) of 0.88 to 0.95, root mean square error(RMSE) of $1.7{\sim}2.8^{\circ}C$. The operational water temperature forecasting results presented in this study were in good agreement with measured data and had a similar accuracy with model calibration results.

  • The constant modulus algorithm (CMA), one of the widely used blind equalization algorithms, equalizes channels using the second-order statistic of equalizer outputs. The performance of the CMA for multi-level signals such as the quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signal degrades because the CMA maps all signal power onto a single modulus. in this paper, to improve the equalization performance of a QAM system, we propose a shell partitioning method based on error magnitude. We assume the probability distribution of an equalizer output as Gaussian, and obtain decision boundaries by maximum likelihood estimation based on the fact that the distribution of the equalizer output power is noncentral $x^2$. The proposed CMA constructs a multi-moduli equlization system based on the fact that each shell separated by decision boundaries employs a single modulus. Computer simulation results for 32-QAM and 64-QAM show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
