The main reason for its instability is sediment scouring downstream of hydraulic structures. Both physical and numerical models have been used to investigate the influence of soil properties on scour hole geometry. Nevertheless, no research has been conducted on resistance parameters that affect sedimentation and erosion. In addition, auxiliary structures like wing walls, which are prevalent in many real-world applications, have rarely been studied for their impact on morphology. The hydraulic characteristics of steady flow through a boxed culvert are calibrated using a 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics model compared with experimental data in this study, which shows a good agreement between water depth, velocity, and pressure profiles. Test cases showed that 0.015 m grid cells had the lowest NRMSE and MAE values. It is also possible to quantify sediment scour numerically by testing roughness/d50 ratios (cs) and diversion walls at a meander flume outlet. According to the findings, cs = 2.5 indicates a close agreement between numerical and analytical results of maximum scour depth after the culvert; four types of wing walls influence geometrical deformation of the meander flume outlet, resulting in erosion at the concave bank and deposition at the convex bank; two short headwalls are the most appropriate solution for accounting for small changes in morphology. A numerical model can be used to estimate sediment scour at the meander exit channel of hydraulic structures based on the roughness parameter of soil material and headwall type.
The Saemangeum tidal flat with an area of approxirnately $233km^2$ is one of the biggest estuarine tidal flats on the west coast of Korea. Because of its location in the estuary of Mangyeong and Dongjin Rivers, the tidal flat receives large amount of sediments. A 33-km long sea dyke, enclosing a coastal zone of $401km^2$, was constructed to reclaim tidal flat in the Saemangeum area. The dyke construction radically changes the local tidal current regime and estuarine circulation. These have an effect on sedimentary environments in the tidal flat. On the tidal flats of the study area net deposition occurred, but net erosion occurred near tidal channel in 2004. The comparison of topography and surface sediments in summer 2004 with those in summer 1988 before the dyke construction showed that elevation increased with maximum 80cm and mean grain sizes were fining at Gwanghwal tidal flats. Sedimentary facies of two cores from Gwanghwal tidal flat revealed homogeneous layers in the upper part suggesting rapid deposition after the dyke construction. The sedimentation rate in Gwanghwal tidal flat(GW 6) using $^{210}Pb$ analysis was about 5.4cm/yr which is well matched with the sedimentation pattern revealed by change in topography.
We conducted a three-dimensional numerical simulation by using the FLOW-3D, with RANS as the governing equation, in an effort to track the dam-break wave.immediately after a dam break.in areas surrounding where the dam break took place as well as the bed change caused by the dam-break wave. In particular, we computed the bed change in the movable bed and compared the variation in flood wave induced by the bed change with our analysis results in the fixed bed. The analysis results can be summarized as follows: First, the analysis results on the flood wave in the L-shaped channel and on the flood wave and bed change in the movable-bed channel successfully reproduce the findings of the hydraulic experiment. Second, the concentration of suspended sediment is the highest in the front of the flood wave, and the greatest bed change is observed in the direct downstream of the dam where the water flow changes tremendously. Generated in the upstream of the channel, suspended sediment results in erosion and sedimentation alternately in the downstream region. With the arrival of the flood wave, erosion initially prove predominant in the inner side of the L-shaped bend, but over time, it tends to move gradually toward the outer side of the bend. Third, the flood wave in the L-shaped channel with a movable bed propagates at a slower pace than that in the fixed bed due to the erosion and sedimentation of the bed, leading to a remarkable increase in flood water level.

As facilities such as dam reservoir wetlands and agricultural irrigation reservoir wetlands are built, sedimentation occurs over time through erosion, sedimentation transport, and sediment deposition. Sedimentation issues are very important for the maintenance of reservoir wetlands because long-term sedimentation of sediments affects flood and drought control functions. However, research on resignation has been estimated mainly by empirical formulas due to the lack of available data. The purpose of this study was to calculate and compare the sediment deposition rate by developing a multiple regression model along with actual data and empirical formulas. In addition, it was attempted to identify potential causes of collapse by applying it to 64 reservoir wetlands that suffered flood damage due to the long rainy season in 2020 due to reservoir wetland sedimentation and aging. For the target reservoir, 10 locations including the GaGog reservoir located in Miryang city, Gyeongsangnam province in South Korea, where there is actual survey information, were selected. A multiple regression model was developed in consideration of physical and climatic characteristics, and a total of four empirical formulas and sediment deposition rate were calculated. Using this, the error of the sediment deposition rate was compared. As a result of calculating the sediment deposition rate using the multiple regression model, the error was the lowest from 0.21(m3km2/yr) to 2.13(m3km2/yr). Therefore, based on the sediment deposition rate estimated by the multi-regression model, the change in the available capacity of reservoir wetlands was analyzed, and the effective storage capacity was found to have decreased from 0.21(%) to 16.56(%). In addition, the sediment deposition rate of the reservoir where the overflow damage occurred was relatively higher than that of the reservoir where the piping damage occurred. In other words, accumulating sediment deposition rate at the bottom of the reservoir would result in a lack of acceptable effective water capacity and reduced reservoir flood and drought control capabilities, resulting in reservoir collapse damage.

The study deals with surface erosion patterns due to the development of cropland toward hillslope and hilltop in the Oncheon-gun, pyeongbuk province and Nampo city of west coast area in the North Korea, using Quick Bird satellite images with 60cm resolution. In North Korea, for national economic difficult after 1980 year, newly developed croplands have been along the gentle hillslope, in which it is possible for individual man power different from the tideland which needs large scaled man-power and equipment. The new croplands are named Darakbat(terraced farm with embankment) and Bitalbat(titled farm developed on the original hill slope), neighboring with orchard and grouped settlement in lower valley. For supplying agricultural water, irrigation ditches and temporal crop storages have been constructed, connecting Darakbat, Bitalbat and orchard. These cropland developments have caused surface erosion composed of 3 types such as pit, linear and headward erosion, together with rill and gully. Owing to poor management of cropland and irrigation system, topsoil erosion and, collapse and sedimentation of ditch and pool, caused the decrease of agricultural productivity. These analysis using Quick Bird images can suggest original raw data about geographical facts on North Korea agriculture and help to recover their agricultural system and plan future national unified land.
To understand temporal variations in geochemical characteristics of intertidal surface sediments around Byeonsan Peninsula (in the middle of the western coast, Korea) after the construction of Saemanguem dyke, the sedimentation rate and various geochemical parameters, including mean grain size (Mz), water content (WC), ignition loss (IL), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and acid volatile sulfide (AVS), were measured along four transects (A.D lines) at monthly intervals from February 2008 to March 2009. The average monthly sedimentation rate ranged from -5.3 to 3.8 mm/month (mean $-0.8{\pm}2.7\;mm$/month), which showed an erosion-dominated environment in the lower part of the intertidal zone. In addition, surface sediments were eroded in summer and autumn, but were deposited in spring and winter. The Mz of surface sediments ranged from -0.8 to $3.4{\varnothing}$ (mean $2.8{\pm}0.5{\varnothing}$), indicating that the surface sediments consist of coarser sediments (sand and slightly gravelly sand). The Mz of surface sediments did not show large monthly and/or seasonal variations, although the sedimentation rates of surface sediment showed large seasonal variation. This may be due to lateral shifting and effective dispersion of surface sediments by wind, tide, and longshore current. The concentrations of IL and COD in the surface sediments ranged from 0.2 to 2.9% (mean $1.4{\pm}0.4%$) and from 0.2 to $18.5\;mgO_2$/g-dry (mean $3.9{\pm}3.4\;mgO_2$/g-dry), respectively, which were slightly higher in spring than in the other seasons. This may be related to spring blooms of phytoplankton in seawater and/or benthic microalgae in surface sediments. On the other hand, no AVS concentrations were detected in surface sediments at any of the sampling stations during the study period.
Paleostudies using lake sediment are essential to reconstruct environmental history of cental Mexico, where few documents on ancient civilizations and the colonial period exist. This study aims to reveal changes in the soil erosion rates through the calculation of sediment influx into the lake. The calculation is based on different kinds of chronologies and LOI. Sediment influx and dates for important events could be obtained in great detail through various chronological methods. Results show that corn agriculture was the most important reason to degrade the environmental status of the lake basin and European cattle raising was not much influential within the lake basin at least. It was possible to reveal a lot of recent environmental changes in detail, because the lake sediment used for this study has a very high sedimentation rate. Also, due to an accurate chronological framework, fundamental problems with the sediment were solved and reliable results could be produced.

Unlike in the past, the world is facing water shortages due to climate change and difficulties in simultaneously managing the risks of flooding. The Four Major Rivers project was carried out with the aim of realizing a powerful nation of water by managing water resources and fostering the water industry, and the construction period was relatively short compared to the unprecedented scale. Therefore, the prediction and analysis of how the river environment changes after the Four Major Rivers Project is insufficient. Currently, part of the construction section of the Four Major Rivers Project is caused by repeated erosion and sedimentation due to the effects of sandification caused by large dredging and flood-time reservoirs, and the head erosion of the tributaries occurs. In order to solve these problems, the riverbed maintenance work was installed, but it resulted in erosion of both sides of the river and the development of new approaches and techniques to keep the river bed stable, such as erosion and excessive sedimentation, is required. The water agent plays a role of securing a certain depth of water for the main stream by concentrating the flow so much in the center and preventing levee erosion by controlling the flow direction and flow velocity. In addition, Groyne products provide various ecological environments by forming a natural form of riverbeds by inducing local erosion and deposition in addition to the protection functions of the river bank and embankment. Therefore, after reviewing the method of determining the shape of the Groyne structure currently in use by utilizing the mobile limit flow rate and marginal reflux force, a new Critical Movement Velocity(${\bar{U}}_d$) and a new resistance coefficient formula considering the mathematical factors applicable to the actual domestic stream were developed and the measures applicable to Groyne installation were proposed.
The seemingly scattered plot of heat flow versus crustal thickness is explained by geodynamic processes and simple thermal relaxation in two contrasting tectonic elements. Elevated heat flow is characteristic of rift provinces where the crust is attenuated by stretching but also of orogenic belts where thrust tectonics thickens the crust and significantly enhances crustal heat production. With the progression of time, isostatic processes thin the thickened crust through uplift and erosion and thicken the rifted crust through subsidence and sedimentation. Heat flow relaxes to a value in equilibrium with background mantle heat flow.
A good understanding of the interaction between flow, vegetation, and sediment is required for successful river restoration and sustainable flood management. The purpose of this paper is to provide a summary of available methods to determine flow resistance of natural rivers with vegetation, and discuss the influence of vegetation on erosion and sedimentation processes. Recently, significant advances have been made, but the effects of vegetation on flow and sediment dynamics are still not fully understood. Possible solutions to close the gaps in the current knowledge are suggested, with special focus directed to the determination of the interactive width between main channel and vegetated floodplains, the flow resistance of flexible vegetation with and without leaves, and the flow over submerged vegetation with low water depth.
