  • The supersonic combustion experiments are carried out using T3 free-piston shock tunnel. Different shock tube fill pressures have various inflow conditions. $15^{\circ}$ inclined hydrogen fuel injection is located before the cavity. Oblique shock is generated at the trailing edge of the cavity and reflects off the top and bottom wall. For non-reacting flow, static pressures in low equivalence ratio are similar to those in no fuel injection. As equivalence ratio is increased, static pressures are increased in the duct. In the similar equivalence ratio, static pressures are increased when total enthalpy is decreased. For reacting flow, the flame is occurred near the cavity. The combustion is weak locally in the middle of the duct. The up and down pressure distribution in the duct means that the supersonic combustion is generated.

  • The effects of co-flow and the variation of the equivalence ratio on NOx emission were investigated experimentally for unconfined and confined partially premixed flames. The shape, length, temperature of flames and the concentration of burnt gas were measured. Two types of co-flow (parallel and swirling co-flow) were considered. For unconfined flames, flame with parallel co-flow is the longest and the next is flame without co-flow. Flame with swirl is the shortest. The length of swirling flame increases suddenly under certain value of equivalence ratio. EINOx is diminished by the decrease of equivalence ratio. It is found that the unconfining of flame enhances the emission of NOx. The EINOx of unconfined flame with parallel co-flow is less than that of flame without co-flow.

  • The characteristics of flame stability have been studied experimentally using a slot burner. The blowout conditions of a fuel-lean premixed laminar flame, which is located in the middle of fuel-rich premixed laminar flames, are identified for propane, ethylene, and methane flames. The fuel-rich flames could stabilize the fuel-lean flame for the equivalence ratio as low as 0.2. The laminar flame speed along with the heat release rate is likely to be the important factor in stabilizing a fuel-lean flame. The increase of heat release rate on a fuel-rich flame lowers the equivalence ratio limit for the stable fuel-lean flames. The stability of fuel-lean flames, however, was not sensitive to the equivalence ratio of a fuel-rich flame.

엔진실린더 모형 연소실내의 메탄-공기 예혼합기의 화염전파속도 특성 (Propagation Speed Characteristics of Premixed Methane-Air Flame in a Combustion Chamber with Model of Engine Cylinder)

  • Flame propagation speed characteristics of methante-air mixtures were experimentally investigated in combustion chamber modelled engine. Flame propagation process was known as a funtion of equivalence ratio initial pressure and initial temperature. Ion probe and schlieren photograph were applied to measure the local flame speed and flame radius in quiescent mixtures. Pressure was also measured to make sure of the reproducibility and to apply combustion analysis. Burning velocity was calculated from the flame propagation speed and combustion analysis. Flames were developed faster with higher initial pressure and initial temperature but showed maximum propagation speed at equivalence ratio 1.1 regardless of initial pressure and temperature. Local flame speed was maximum values at near midpoint between center and wall.

  • The effect of recirculated exhaust gas on exhaust emissions under four kinds of nozzle tip with the different fuel consumption rate are experimentally investigated by using an once-through boiler with FGR system. The purpose of this study is to develop the FGR control system for reducing NOx in a boiler. Intake and exhaust oxygen concentrations, and equivalence ratio are applied to discuss the effect of FGR rate on exhaust emissions at various fuel consumption rates. It is found that NOx emissions are decreased, while soot emissions are increased owing to the drop of intake and exhaust oxygen concentrations, and the rise of equivalence ratio as FGR rates are elevated.

  • Hydrogen gas has several merits such as lower ignition energy, wide flammability and shorter quenching distance. It leads to high thermal efficiency but backfire occurrence. In this study, feasibility of expansion of BFL(Back-Fire Limit) equivalence ratio and combustion characteristics by a dilution of hydrogen fuel are experimently examined by using experimental heavy duty single cylinder hydrogen fueled engine. As results, it is found that BFL equivalence ratio is expanded to rich range and torque is increased.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the flame structure and combustion characteristics in the model gas turbine combustor changing equivalence ratio. For this purpose, temperature and ion current were measured and these data were analyzed by the PDF and power spectra technique. We found that the flame length is longer while increasing the equivalence ratio in experimental condition, and especially ${\psi}=0.19$, combustion reaction was active by the stable swirl flow. and these flames were governed by the random three dimensional eddy.

난류화염의 화학적 발광 특성에 관한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on Chemiluminescence Characteristics of a Turbulent Flame)

  • The object of this study is a deriving the relations according to the measuring locations between the chemiluminescence and the flame state at commercial burner. In this study, the flame chemiluminescence of the flame of commercial burner is measured using a photomultiplier tube and the optical band-pass filter. In addition, the contour of the chemiluminescence of the flame is measured using the common CCD camera and the optical band-pass filters, and the acquired images is converted by the simple image processing as a matrix form. The results showed that certain relationship between optical data and equivalence ratio exists, and the contour according to the measuring location of the flame chemiluminescence is different by equivalence ratio.

  • This study has investigated the relationship between heat release fluctuations and the flow perturbations in a partially premixed gas turbine combustor using a commercial CFD code. Special focus of the current work is placed on the effect of equivalence ratio on the flame dynamics in a partially-premixed system. As the first step for this combustion dynamics study in the non-perfectly premixed combustor, flame behaviors are modeled and then compared with measured results under both steady and unsteady conditions. The calculated results of the flame transfer function with equivalence ratio fluctuation are found to well capture the main qualitative characteristics of the combustion dynamics for the partially-premixed flames.

수소 연료의 연소조건 변화에 따른 NOx 배출 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the NOx Emission Characteristics in Parametrically Varied Laminar Hydrogen-Air Coflow flames)

  • The NOx emission characteristics of jet flames fueled with It was studied. Experimental and numerical investigations were carried out for various flames with varying equivalence ratio, fuel flow rate and nozzle diameter. The Emission indices of NOx(EINOx) were measured by chemiluminescent method and calculated by simulation using detailed chemistry. The results show that the numerical results represent well the trends of EINOx experimentally observed. EINOx of H$_2$ flame steeply increase at small equivalence ratio, gently increase and steady at more than equivalence ratio is 4.0. EINOx trends of H$_2$ flame can be describe in function of residence time in the high-temperature region weighted by the maximum flame temperature.
