Modified Ammonia Removal Model Based on Equilibrium and Mass Transfer Principles

  • Yoon et $al.^1$ presented an approximate mathmatical model to describe ammonia removal from an experimental batch reactor system with gaseous headspace. The development of the model was initially based on assuming instantaneous equilibrium between ammonia in the aqueous and gas phases. In the model, a "saturation factor, $\beta$" was defined as a constant and used to check whether the equilibrium assumption was appropriate. The authors used the trends established by the estimated $\beta$ values to conclude that the equilibrium assumption was not valid. The authors presented valuable experimental results obtained using a carefully designed system and the model used to analyze the results accounted for the following effects: speciation of ammonia between $NH_3$ and $NH^+_4$ as a function of pH; temperature dependence of the reactions constants; and air flow rate. In this article, an alternative model based on the exact solution of the governing mass-balance differential equations was developed and used to describe ammonia removal without relying on the use of the saturation factor. The modified model was also extended to mathematically describe the pH dependence of the ammonia removal rate, in addition to accounting for the speciation of ammonia, temperature dependence of reactions constants, and air flow rate. The modified model was used to extend the analysis of the original experimental data presented by Yoon et $al.^1$ and the results matched the theory in an excellent manner.

A dual approach to perform geometrically nonlinear analysis of plane truss structures

  • The main objective of this study is to develop a dual approach for geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis of plane truss structures. The geometric nonlinearity is considered using the Total Lagrangian formulation. The nonlinear solution is obtained by introducing and minimizing an objective function subjected to displacement-type constraints. The proposed method can fully trace the whole equilibrium path of geometrically nonlinear plane truss structures not only before the limit point but also after it. No stiffness matrix is used in the main approach and the solution is acquired only based on the direct classical stress-strain formulations. As a result, produced errors caused by linearization and approximation of the main equilibrium equation will be eliminated. The suggested algorithm can predict both pre- and post-buckling behavior of the steel plane truss structures as well as any arbitrary point of equilibrium path. In addition, an equilibrium path with multiple limit points and snap-back phenomenon can be followed in this approach. To demonstrate the accuracy, efficiency and robustness of the proposed procedure, numerical results of the suggested approach are compared with theoretical solution, modified arc-length method, and those of reported in the literature.

단이론과 모멘트방법을 이용한 데옥시리보뉴클레오사이드의 평형상수의 계산 및 비교 (Comparison and Estimation of Equilibrium Constants for Deoxyribonucleosides by Plate Theory and Moment Method)

  • 데옥시리보뉴클레오사이드의 평형상수를 단이론과 모멘트방법에 의해서 일정 용매 조성법 역상 고성능 액체크로마토그래피(Reversed-Phase High Performance Liquid Chromatography)를 이용하여 계산하였다. 이동상은 물을 기본으로 유기용매로서 acetonitrile과 methanol을 사용하였다. 단이론은 선형 흡착식으로부터 나온 모델로 일정한 유속으로 용매가 column의 단을 평형을 이루면서 지나간다는 가정 하에서 이루어졌다. 모멘트 방법은 실험결과로부터 얻은 peak에서 첫 번째 절대 모멘트를 구하여 평형상수를 계산하는 방법이다. 이 두가지 방법에 의한 다섯 가지의 데옥시리보뉴클레오사이드의 평형상수값은 서로 근사하였고, 용량인자를 이용하여 구한 평형상수의 값과도 비슷하였다. 평형상수는 이동상에서의 organic modifier의 양의 semi-log의 관계식으로 표리되었고 단이론에 의해 계산된 용출곡선은 실험값과 잘 일치하였다.

A method of nonlinear optimal regulator using a Liapunov-like function

  • In general it is difficult to determine a Liapunov function for a given asymptotically stable, nonlinear differential equations system. But, in the system with control inputs, it is feasible to make a given positive function, except for a small area, globally satisfy the conditions of the Liapunov function for the system. We call such a positive function a Liapunov-like function, and propose a method of nonlinear optimal regulator using this Liapunov-like function. We also use the periodic Liapuitov-like friction that suits the system whose equilibrium points exist periodically. The relationship between the Liapunov function and cost function which this nonlinear regulator minimizes is considered using inverse optimal method.

Optimizing structural topology patterns using regularization of Heaviside function

  • This study presents optimizing structural topology patterns using regularization of Heaviside function. The present method needs not filtering process to typical SIMP method. Using the penalty formulation of the SIMP approach, a topology optimization problem is formulated in co-operation, i.e., couple-signals, with design variable values of discrete elements and a regularized Heaviside step function. The regularization of discontinuous material distributions is a key scheme in order to improve the numerical problems of material topology optimization with 0 (void)-1 (solid) solutions. The weak forms of an equilibrium equation are expressed using a coupled regularized Heaviside function to evaluate sensitivity analysis. Numerical results show that the incorporation of the regularized Heaviside function and the SIMP leads to convergent solutions. This method is tested using several examples of a linear elastostatic structure. It demonstrates that improved optimal solutions can be obtained without the additional use of sensitivity filtering to improve the discontinuous 0-1 solutions, which have generally been used in material topology optimization problems.

  • The significance of point defects as relevant centers concerning electrochemical function is highlighted. Starting from the most simple case of dilute equilibrium bulk defect chemistry, influence of defect interaction and in particular the impact of interfaces on point defect redistribution are considered. Then recent progress in the field of kinetics in bulk and at boundaries is discussed. Finally, selected applications with emphasis on battery and sensor technology are presented.

  • The new method to determine the parameters in the liquid partition function of H. Eyring and co-workers is proposed, in which method the equilibrium condition of the three phases and the boundary condition of the liquid partition function at the triple point are used. The calculated thermodynamic properties using the new determined parameters are agreed well with the observed values.

고령화가 지역 간 분화에 미치는 영향과 조세의 역할 (The Impact of Aging on Regional Differentiation and the Role of Tax)

  • 본 논문에서는 고령화의 진행이 초래하는 산업집적 패턴의 변화에 대해 신경제지리학적 접근을 통하여 분석하였다. 은퇴인구 변수의 추가는 단기적으로 지역별 물가, 소득, 명목임금 및 실질임금에 영향을 미친다. 일반적으로 장기균형 조건으로 채택되는 지역 간 실질임금의 균등화는 은퇴인구를 고려하지 못하므로 간접효용의 균등 조건을 추가하였으며, 새로운 장기균형을 달성케 하는 최적 세액을 제시한다. 은퇴인구의 발생은 모든 지역의 실질임금을 하락시킴과 동시에 효용기준을 만족시키는 특정 지역 제조업 종사자 비율의 지점을 하락시켜 제조업의 집적을 방해하는 반면, 세금은 은퇴인구가 발생한 지역의 효용과 실질임금을 높이고 다른 지역의 효용과 실질임금을 낮춘다. 이러한 상황에서 지역 간 실질임금 및 간접효용 비율이 같아지는 제조업 인구의 비율과 세금의 조합이 존재한다. 정부가 정액세의 부과를 통해 실질임금을 적절히 조정한다면 모든 지역에서 실질임금의 급격한 하락을 막으면서 효용수준을 안정시킬 수 있다.
