  • Although the net-shape molding of composites is generally recommended, molded composites are frequently required cutting or grinding due to the dimensional inaccuracy for precision machine elements . During the composite machining operations such as cutting and grinding, the temperature at the cutting point may increase beyond the allowed limit due to the low thermal conductivity of composites, which might degrade the matrix of composite. Therefore, in this work, the temperature at the cutting point during cut-off grinding of carbon fiber epoxy composites was measured. The cutting force and surface roughness were also measured to investigate the cut-off grinding characteristics of the composites. The experiments were performed both under dry and wet grinding conditions with respect to cutting speed and feed rate. From the experimental investigation, the optimal conditions for the composite cut-off grinding were suggested.

  • Nondestructive sensing of electrospun PYDF web and multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/epoxy composites were investigated using electro-micromechanical technique. Electrospinning is a technique used to produce micron to submicron diameter polymeric fibers. Electrospun PVDF web was also evaluated for the sensing properties by micromechanical test and by measurement electrical resistance. CNT composite was especially prepared for high volume contents, 50 vol% of reinforcement. Electrical contact resistivity on humidity sensing was a good indicator for monitoring as for multifunctional applications. Work of adhesion using contact angle measurement was studied to correlate acid-base surface energy between carbon fiber and CNF composites, and will study furher for interfacial adhesion force by micromechanical test.

  • This paper reports the effects of nickel film interleaves on the interlaminar shear strength(ILSS) of carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites(CFRPs). A nickel thin film was deposited onto the prepreg by radio frequency(RF) sputtering at room temperature. The ILSS of the nickel film interleaved hybrid composites was increased compared to that of the composites without interleaves. To understand the mechanism of enhancement of the ILSS, the fracture surface of the tested specimens was examined by scanning electron microscopy(SEM). The metal interleaves were acted as a reinforcement for the matrix rich interface and the shear property of their composites improved by enhancing the resistance to matrix cracking.

  • Electromagnetic interference(EMI) shielding effectiveness(SE) was investigated in of woven fabric made of epoxy/copper-nickel fabrics and nickel coated carbon fiber reinforced acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene(ABS) composites. The coaxial transmission line method was used to measure the EMI shielding effectiveness of the composites. We designed and constructed a measuring system, consisting of a network analyzer and a device that plays the serves as a sample holder and at the same time as a transmission medium of the incident electromagnetic wave. The measurement of SE were carried out frequency range from 100MHz to 2GHz. It is observed that the SE of the composits is the frequency dependent increase with the increase in nickel coated carbon fibre volume fraction. The nickel coating with 20wt% ABS composite was shown to exhibit up to 60dB of SE. The result that nickel coated carbon fibre ABS composite can be used for the purpose of EMI shielding as well as for some microwave applications.

  • In this study, DAQ and TRA modules were applied to the CFRP single specimen testing method using AE. A method for crack identification in CFRP specimens based on k-mean clustering and wavelet transform analysis are presented. Mode I on DCB under vertical loading and mode II on 3-points ENF testing under share loading have been carried out, thereafter k-mean method for clustering AE data and wavelet transition method per amplitude have been applied to investigate characteristics of interfacial fracture in CFRP composite. It was found that the fracture mechanism of Carbon/Epoxy Composite to estimate of different type of fractures such as matrix(epoxy resin) cracking, delamination and fiber breakage same as AE amplitude distribution using a AE frequency analysis. In conclusion, the presented results provide a foundation for using wavelet analysis as efficient crack detection tool. The advantage of using wavelet analysis is that local features in a displacement response signal can be identified with a desired resolution, provided that the response signal to be analyzed picks up the perturbations caused by the presence of the crack.

  • Recently, the applications of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs) have become broader than ever when it comes to such industries as automotive, ships, aerospace and military because of their lightweight-ness and high mechanical properties. Thermosetting plastics like epoxy are frequently used as the binding matrix in CFRPs due to their high hardness, wetting characteristics and low viscosity. However, they cannot melted and remolded. For this reason, thermosetting plastic wastes have caused serious environmental problems with the production of fiber reinforced plastics. Thus, many studies have focused on the carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastics (CFRTPs) and recycling carbon fiber. In this study, recycled carbon fiber (RCF) was prepared from CFRPs using a pyrolysis method, which was employed to separate resin and carbon fiber. The degree of decomposition for epoxy resin was confirmed from thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The RCF was cut and ground to prepare a carbon fiber composite sheet (CFCS). CFCS was manufactured by applying recycled carbon fibers and various thermoplastic fibers. Various characterizations were performed, including morphological analyses of surface and cross-section, mechanical properties, and crystallization enthalpy of CFCS at different cooling conditions.

  • Structures can be evaluated their health status by allowable loading criteria. These criteria can be determined by the maximum strain. Therefore, in order to detect this maximum strain of structures, fiber optic Bragg grating(FBG) sensor probes are newly designed and fabricated to perform the memorizing detection even if the sensor system is on-and-off. The probe is constructed with an FBG optical fiber embedded in silver epoxy. When the load is applied and removed on the structure, the residual strain remains in the silver epoxy to memorize the maximum strain effect. In this study, a commercial Al-foil bonded FBG sensor probe was tested to investigate the detection feasibility at first. FBG sensor probes with silver epoxy were fabricated as three different sizes. The detection feasibility of maximum strain was studied by doing the tensile tests of CFRP specimens bonded with these FBG sensor probes. It was investigated the sensitivity coefficient defined as the maximum strain divided by the residual strain. The highest sensitivity was 0.078 of the thin probe having the thickness of 2 mm.

  • Carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs) have been recently investigated as an alternative material for Geosynthetics to improve soil properties. One of the factors influencing the fiber orientation and mechanical properties of CFRP is the effect of soil overburden pressure. This study investigates the tensile behavior of cast-in-place CFRP. During the curing time of specimens, a wide range of normal stress is applied on specimens sandwiched between the soils. Two different soil types are used to determine the effect of soil grain size on the mechanical properties of CFRP. Specimens are also prepared with different specifications such as curing time and mixing soil in to the epoxy. In this study, tensile tests are conducted to investigate the effect of such parameters on tensile behavior of CFRP. The experimental results indicate that by increasing the normal stress and soil grain size, the ultimate tensile strength and the corresponding strain of CFRP decrease; however, reduction in elastic modulus is not noticeable. It should be noted that, increasing the curing period of epoxy resin and mixing soil in to the epoxy have no significant effect on the tensile properties of CFRP.

  • The present paper is concerned with the optimum design of taper spring, in which the static spring rate of the fiber-reinforcement composite material spring is fitted to that of the steel leaf spring. The thickness and width of springs were selected as design variables. The object functions of the regression model were obtained through the analysis with a common analytic program. After regression coefficients were calculated to get functions of the regression model, optimal solutions were calculated with DOT. E-glass/epoxy and carbon/epoxy were used as fiber reinforcement materials in the design, which were compared and analyzed with the steel leaf spring. The result of the static spring rates show that optimized composite leaf springs agree with steel leaf spring within 1%.
