The durability of carbon/epoxy composites under salt water environment was investigated through salt water spray tester. Salt water environment was obtained through salt spray and salt immersion. 5% NaCl solution was used for salt water as natural salt water. Mechanical test was performed to obtain tensile properties, flexural properties, and shear properties of carbon/epoxy composite over 12 months under salt water environment. Dynamic mechanical analyzer was used to investigate thermal analysis properties such storage modulus, loss modulus, and tan ${\delta}$. Also FT/IR test was conducted to investigate a change in chemical structure. According to the results, mechanical properties were found to be slowly degraded as a function of exposure times. Regarding to thermal analysis properties, storage modulus was insensitive to exposure times, but loss modulus was shown to be slightly decreased. Although the shape and location of peak in FT/IR were not much changed, the intensity of peak in FT/IR was affected on exposure times. We also found that salt water immersion was more severe to the durability of carbon/epoxy composite rather than salt water spray.

Epoxy/microsilica (65 phr)/nanosilica (0~5 phr) composites (EMNC) were prepared in order to develop a high-voltage insulation material, where phr means parts per hundred relative to the epoxy oligomer. Tensile and flexural tests of the composites were carried out, and the AC electrical breakdown strength was measured, after which all the data were estimated by Weibull statistical analysis. As the nanosilica content increased, the tensile strength increased, and the highest value was 117.7 MPa in the EMNC system with 3 phr nanosilica, which was ca. 10% higher than that of the system without nanosilica. The value then decreased after 3 phr. The flexural strength and AC electrical breakdown strength showed the same tendencies as the tensile strength. The highest value of the flexural strength was 184.6 MPa in the EMNC system with 3 phr of nanosilica, which was ca. 15% higher than that of the system without nanosilica. The strongest value of the AC electrical breakdown strength was 79.0 kV/0.5 mm in the EMNC system with 3 phr of nanosilica, which was ca. 34% higher than that of the system without nanosilica.

This study is about the effect of nitrogen gas pressures during manufacturing process on the mechanical properties of composite materials. $TiO_2$/epoxy resin nanocomposites and carbon fiber reinforced epoxy resin(CFRP) composites were fabricated under various nitrogen gas pressures. Tensile strength test, vicker's hardness test and fracture surface observation were carried out to investigate the effect of nitrogen gas pressure. As a result, the tensile strength of nanocomposite and CFRP composites showed clearly increasing tendency by a change in the nitrogen gas pressure up to 3.0 atm and then the tensile strength decreased a little. However, the vicker's hardness of $TiO_2$/epoxy nanocomposites showed same hardness values regardless of the nitrogen gas pressures.
The phenomenological evolution laws of damage can be defined either based on residual life or residual strength. The failure of a specimen can be defined immediately after or before fracture. The former is called in this paper by "failure defined by approach I" and the latter "failure defined by approach II." Usually at failure there is a discontinuity of loading variables and, because of this, damage at failure is discontinuous. Therefore the values of damage at failure by two different approaches are not the same. Based on this idea the sequence effects of the phenomenological evolution law of damage given by $dD/dN=g(D)f({\Phi})$ were studied. Thin-walled graphite/epoxy tubes consisting of four of $[{\pm}45]_s$ laminates were used for the experimental study of sequence effects and the effects of mean stress on fatigue life. It was found that the sequence effects in two step uniaxial fatigue for $[{\pm}45]_s$ graphite/epoxy tubular specimen showed that a high-low block loading sequence was less damaging than a low-high one.

The epoxy/micro-and nano-mixed silica composites(EMNC) systems were prepared and the AC insulation breakdown strength was evaluated. Glass transition temperature (Tg) and crosslink density were also measured by dynamic mechanical analyzer(DMA) in order to correlate them with the electrical and mechanical properties, and the effect of silane coupling agent on the electrical properties was also studied. Electrical properties and crosslink density of epoxy/micro-silica composite were noticeably improved by addition of nano-silica and silane coupling agent, and the highest breakdown strength was obtained by addition of 0.5~5 phr of nano-silica and 2.5 phr of silane coupling agent, and the highest tensile and flexural strength were obtained by addition of 2.5 phr of nano-silica.

It is well-known that the mechanical properties of MMT(montmorillonite) nanocomposites are better than those of conventional composites. In this study, tensile tests were performed to determine the effect of silane modification of MMT and its weight ratio on the tensile properties of MMT/epoxy nanocomposites. It was found that the tensile strength and the elastic modulus of MMT/epoxy nanocomposites increased with increasing weight ratio of MMT. The elastic modulus of silane-modified MMT/epoxy nanocomposites was higher than that of untreated MMT/epoxy nanocomposites, irrespective of weight ratio.

The investigation of cure kinetics, morphology, and fracture toughness studies on epoxy resin/amine terminated PEI/Anhydride system were performed by differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy. Modified autocatalystic kinetics model was applied by isothermal scan test. The fracture toughness for the neat epoxy resin was 2.15 MPa m0.5 and the fracture toughness was improved 45% as neat epoxy resin system. The generation of secondary phase of AT-PEI was observed and its size was grown up by increasing contents of PEI.

A conventional epoxy-microsilica composite (EMC) and an epoxy-microsilica-nanosilicate composite (EMNC) were prepared in order to apply them to mold-type transformers, current transformers (CT) and potential transformers (PT). Nanosilicate was exfoliated in a epoxy resin using our electric field dispersion process and AC insulation breakdown strength at $30{\sim}150^{\circ}C$, glass transition temperature and viscoelasticity were studied. AC insulation breakdown strength of EMNC was higher than that of EMC and that value of EMNC was far higher at high temperature. Glass transition temperature and viscoelasticity property of EMNC was higher than those of EMC at high temperature. These results was due to the even dispersion of nanosilicates among the nanosilicas, which could be observed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). That is, the nanosilicates interrupt the electron transfer and restrict the mobility of the epoxy chains.

Epoxy/Organically Modified Layered Silicate Nanocomposites were prepared by dispersing synthetic layered silicate modified with alkyl ammonium ions. In the dispersing process, the organically modified layered silicate were mixed in epoxy resin with shearing, and aggregation of the silicate were removed by centrifugal separation after mixing epoxy resin and silicates. Micrographs taken by transmission electron microscopy(TEM) indicate that the nanocomposites have a mixed morphology including both parallel silicate layers and exfoliated silicate layers area, As the thermal properties, the glass transition temperature of the nanocomposites was shifted to a higher temperature($+6^{\circ}C$)than pure epoxy. Furthermore, dispersion of OMLS will prevented relative permittivity from increasing at a high temperature above the glass transition temperature.

In this study, epoxy/mica composite was prepared by mixing with mechanical stirrer together with homogenizer, and the effect of amino-type silane coupling agent was also studied. To reduce the viscosity without any decrement of other properties, 1,4-Butanediol diglycidyl ether (1,4-BDGE) as an aliphatic epoxy reactive diluent was introduced to the epoxy/mica composite in order to use as vanish for high voltage motor and generator stator winding. It was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation that interfacial characteristics between organic epoxy and inorganic mica was modified by coupling agent treatment so that glass transition temperature increased, and tensile strength and electrical breakdown strength increased. The properties were estimated by Weibull statistical analysis and the ac electrical breakdown strength was 20.2% modified by treating silane coupling agent.
