One hundred and thirteen patients underwent diagnostic fiberoptic bronchoscopy to exclude the presence of the lung cancer at the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Kyungpook National University Hospital from January 1979, to July 1980. Sixty five cases of these patients were studied for passible lung cancer by bronchoscopic examination. Patients varied in age from 24 to 75 years, with the highest concentration lying in the sixth decade (49%). male was predominated with sex ratio of 6.3 : 1. Forth three (75.4%) of 57 cases impressed as definitive, and 8(14.5%) of 55 cases impressed as negatibe lung cancer were subsequently proved to have had lung cancer. Positive bronchoscopic biopsy was found in 10 of 14 lung cancers which were situated in the left main bronchus and in 11 of 13 neoplasms involving the right upper lobe bronchus. epidermoid cell carcinomas were most frequent(82.4%). Bronchial biopsy detected 34(79%) of 43 hilar cancers and 1.3(59%) 22 periphera neoplasms, in those patients who had fiberoptic bronchoscopic examinations. In the present series of 65 cases, the lesion was so far advanced when first seen that it was considered inoperable in 31 (47.7%) and operable 34(52.3%), 19(55.9%) of these refusing surgery. fifteen were explored of whom 12(80%) were resectable.
The differential diagnosis of lesions in buccal area include lipoma, neurofibromas, epidermoid cyst, salivary ducts calculus, hemangioma, lymphadenopathy. Accessory parotid glands is defined as salivary gland tissue adjacent to the parotid duct, but separated from the body of parotid and it may be found in approximately 20% of human parotid glands. The appearance of an accessory parotid tumor is rare, with a reported frequency of 7.7% of all parotid neoplasm. Angiomyoma, which is also termed angioleiomyoma, is a rare solitary subcutaneous tumors arising from the vascular smooth muscle. It often occur in the extremities and is rarely found in buccal area. We present 2 cases of rare tumor in buccal mass and resected surgically without facial nerve palsy.
Pilomatrixoma is an uncommon tumor arising from hair follicles. Commonly occur in children and most frequently in the head and neck region. It can be mistaken for parotid gland tumor, dermoid cyst, or epidermoid cyst, especially when large lesions develop over the periauricular area, difficulty discerning them from lesion developing within the superficial lobe of the parotid gland may occur. We experienced two cases of pilomatrixomas mimicking parotid gland tumor. Although their histologic appearance is characteristic, they may be clinically misdiagnosed. However, combining clinical information with the distinct histologic features should lead to the correct diagnosis.
The tumor in accessory parotid gland (APG) is rarely occurred and its incidence is about 7.7% of all parotid gland neoplasms, but has a higher frequency of malignancy than major salivary glands. The mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the most common malignancy in APG, while B-cell lymphoma is less than 2%. It is often appeared as superficial mass in mid-cheek area. This lesion requires differential diagnosis with epidermoid cyst, lipoma, neurogenic tumors, Stensen's duct stone, lymphadenopathy and hemangioma etc. The mucosa associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma, which is also termed extra-nodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma tends to be localized disease for long time and has a relatively indolent course. We recently encountered a 69-year-old man with superficial solitary mass on the right cheek area that finally diagnosed as MALT lymphoma in APG. We report the rare and unique case with brief literature review.
To investigate the biological functions of the EGF-like domain of mouse betacellulin (BTC), mouse BTC(33-80), a 48-residue peptide corresponding to the EGF-like domain, was synthesized by stepwise solidphase methods using a 9-fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl (Fmoc) strategy. The homogeneity of synthetic mouse BTC(33-80) was confirmed by analytical reversed phase (RP)-HPLC, amimo acid analysis, and fast atom bombardment mass spectrometer (FAB-MS). Three disulfide bond pairings of synthetic mouse BTC(33-80) were established by amino acid analysis of cysteine-containing fragments derived from thermolytic digestion. These were consistent with the pairings of EGF and transforming growth factor ($TGF-{\alpha}$). The EGF-Iike domain of mouse BTC showed equipotent activity in both EGF-receptor binding on A-431 epidermoid carcinoma cells, and mitogenesis on NIH-3T3 fibroblast cells, as compared with authentic h-EGF. Results suggest that the EGF-Iike domain of BTC plays a significant role in mitogenic activity with an EGF-receptor mediated system.
Eight patients with proven clinical stage Ill lung carcinoma of which six were epidermoid cell carcinoma and two were small cell carcinoma underwent concomitant radiation therapy and chemotherapy before surgical resection from March 1990 to February 1992 at the thoracic surgical department, Yongdong Severance Hospital, Yonsei University College Medicine The therapy consisted of more than one cycle of chemotherapy every 4 weeks and concomitant irradiation. Three to four weeks after chemotherapy and radiation therapy, the patient were reevaluated for thoracotomy and pulmonary resection. Two patients were found to have unresectable lesions and, radiosotopes were implanted to the remaining tumors. Three patients had complete pneumonectomies and two patients had pericardial penumonectomyo. Only one patient had complete pneumonectomy & concomitant resection of ribs attached to tumors with reconstruction of chest wall with Marlex mesh. Complete sterilization of lung tumor and mediastinal nodes proven histologically was achieved in 2 patients, without operative mortality. The median survival of all patients was eight months, but the median survival of survivors which lung tumor were completely resected completely and whose pathologic reports showed stage I or 0, was about 18 months to now. The overall result indicates some benefit from this preoperative chemotherapy and radiation therapeutic regimen in patients with advanced unresectable lung cancer.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial activity, antimutagenic and anticancer effects and dyeing properties of the fermented indigo extract. The methanol extract of fermented indigo showed a strong inhibition effect on Trich. mentagrophytes and antimutagenic activities against aflatoxin B$_1$(AFB$_1$) in the Ames test using Salmonella typhimurium TA 100. We also found in vitro anticancer effects of the methanol extract of fermented indigo and it was evaluated by using Clone M-3 mouse melanoma cells and A431 human epidermoid carcinoma cells and exerted little cytotoxity against 3T3-L1 embryo fibroblast cell. In the relationship between the K/S values of cotton and silk fabrics dyed with fermented indigo and dyeing repeating times, the K/S values became higher as the repeating times were increased. The K/S values were high when the fabrics were dyed at low temperture. The K/S values of cotton fabrics were higher than those of silk fabrics. Changes of surface color of silk fabrics were higher than those of cotton fabrics after water fastness test, laundering, irradiation and treatment of acidic and alkaline perspiration.
Adenosquamous carcinoma of stomach is a mixed glandular-epidermoid tumor where both components are neoplastic. Its incidence is extremely rare. The five theories on the origin of squamous components are 1) island of ectopic squamous epithelium in the gastric mucosa, 2) squamous metaplasia of gastric epithelium, 3) squamous differentiation in a preexisting adenocarcinoma, 4) endothelial cell differentiated toward squamous elements, and 5) totipotential undifferentiated cells of the gastric mucosa. We experienced three cases of adenosquamous carcinoma. Case 1 was a 71-year-old female patient. ; an ulcerative lesion was present in the pylorus, measuring 5cm in diameter. Case 2 was a 57-year-old male patient. ; an ulcerative lesion is present in the pylorus, measuring 6 em in diameter. Case 3 was a 58-year-old female patient. ; an ulcerative lesion was present in the body and fundus, measuring 10cm in diameter. Microscopic examination revealed a mixed malignant squamous and adenomatous component.
The cytotoxicity-guided fractionation of the seed of Plantago asiatica extracts led to the isolation of four compounds, responsible for the cytotoxicity against four human tumor cell lines, i. e., A431 (Human Epidermoid carcinoma), KHOS-NP (Human Osteosarcoma). SNU-1 (Human stomach carcinoma), SNU-C4 (Human large intestine carcinoma). The structure were elucidated by the phsyco chemical data: ${\beta}-sitosterol(C1)$, $cholest-5-en-3{\beta}-ol(C2)$, rutin(C3), $coumarin-7-O-{\beta}-glucopyranoside(C4)$. $IC_{50}$ values of compound C2 were 14.6, 13.5, 10.3, 17.8 ${\mu}g/ml$, and compound C3 and C4 showed activity, having $IC_{50}$ values ranging from 10.3 to 20.14 ${\mu}g/ml$.

Mollaret meningitis is a rare syndrome first described by Mollaret in 1944, which is reccurent aseptic meningitis with characteristic clinical and spinal fluid cytologic findings. No etiology has been established. Several authors suggested the association with herpes virus infection, some found intracranial epidermoid tumor eventually in patients diagnosed of Mollaret meningitis. We experienced a case of 14-year old male who had 3 episodes of recurrent aseptic meningitis during four years. The patients initially presented with clinical and laboratory feature of bacterial meningitis, however, extensive serological investigation and cerebrospinal fluid analysis failed to reveal a specific cause. Immune system studies were unremarkable. Cranial computed tomography performed during the attack and magnetic resonance imaging when the patient was asymptomatic were both normal. A tentative diagnosis of Mollaret meningitis was established at the 3rd episode. We report this case with a review of related literatures.
