  • Air fluid level in a large ring shadow poses a diagnostic problem. But a new development of fluid level in preexisting bullous lesion is another problem. A 60 year old man with chronic obstructive lung disease was noticed to have multiple bullae. A few years later fluid level was newly developed in some of the bullae. Fluid level persisted for several months and later completely filled the space. Surgical exploration revealed pus collection in the bullae and epidermoid carcinoma in the nearby bronchi.

  • Dermoid cysts located in the floor of the mouth are very rare developmental keratinizing squamous epithelium lined cysts. Anatomically, they are classified as sublingual (median genioglossal), submental (median geniohyoid) and lateral dermoid cysts, and they can be further classified as epidermoid, dermoid, and teratoid cysts by histology. We report a case of sublingual dermoid cyst in a 16-year-old boy presenting as a large sublingual swelling causing speech and swallowing difficulties and discuss the surgical treatment techniques and histopathological features of this lesion.

  • Mucoepidermoid carcinoma occurs more freguently than any other in the major sacivary glands. It is relatively more common in parotid than in submandibular gland. Stewart at al published the first large series of these tumors in 1945 and suggested the name "Mocoepidermoid tumor". Now it is divided three categories : low-grade, intermediate-grade, high-grade. And Mucoepidermoid carcinomas are composed of mucous cells, epidermoid cells, and intermediate cells. We freated low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma patient with induction chemotherapy, surpery, and adjuvomt chemotherapy.

  • Currarino triad is a hereditary condition diagnosed when three abnormalities are noted: (1) an anorectal malformation; (2) an anterior sacral defect and (3) a presacral mass. We experienced 3 cases of Currarino triad with severe constipation. All cases had presacral mass and sacral bony defect. One case had rectovaginal fistula, other one case had holoprosencephaly. Presacral masses were lipomeningomyelocele and epidermoid or dermoid cyst. We report three cases of Currarino triad with brief review of the related literature.

  • Epidermal cysts in mouth floor are rare. There could be confusions in diagnosis due to location and low incidence. For diagnosis, imaging study and cytology are necessary. The treatment of choice is complete excision intraorally or externally and the recurrence is rare. Some authors prefer sclerotherapy, but the follow up is necessary for malignant change. We report two cases of epidermoid cyst in submental area excised externally with literature review.

  • A case of metastatic mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the lung, originating from the hard palate, was diagnosed by sputum and bronchial washing cytology. Although the cytologic features of mucoepidermoid carcinoma have been well described, it is easy to confuse mucoepidermoid carcinoma with the more common primary adenocarcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma of the lung. The features distinguishing mucoepidermoid carcinoma from other primary neoplasms include 1) mucus-secreting cells individually and in clusters admixed with other cell components, 2) epidermoid cells identified by the presence of abundant spread-out cytoplasm and an oval dark nucleus and 3) intermediate cells resembling normal ductal epithelial cells with moderate-to-scanty cytoplasm, a central, round vesicular nucleus and a prominent nucleolus. The morphologic features of metastatic mucoepidermoid carcinoma in this case were similar to those of primary salivary mucoepidermoid carcinoma.

  • Carcinomas derived from ameloblastomas have been designated by a variety of terms, including malignant ameloblastoma, ameloblastic carcinoma, metastatic ameloblastoma, and primary intra-alveolar epidermoid carcinoma. The term of ameloblastic carcinoma is differentiated from the term of malignant amelblastoma and is defined as an ameloblastoma in which there is histologic evidence of malignancy in the primary tumor or the recurrent tumor(or metastasis), regardless of whether it has metastasized. The well-documented and adequately followed cases are currently lacking and this report described an instance of ameloblastic carcinoma with good result after treatment and review of literature.

  • A new natural C-benzylated chalcone, $2',4'-dihydroxy-3'-(2-hydroxybenzyl)-6{\c}-methoxychalcone$ (2), along with two other flavonoids, tiliroside and kaempferol 3-O-rutinoside, and an oxoaporphine alkaloid, lanuginosine were isolated from the aerial parts of Ellipeiopsis cherrevensis (Annonaceae). Two known polyoxygenated cyclohexene derivatives, ferrudiol and zeylenol, and a new analog, ellipeiopsol D, were also isolated. The chalcone 2 exhibited cytotoxic activity against human small-cell lung-cancer (NCl-H187), epidermoid carcinoma (KB) and breast cancer (BC) cell lines with $IC_{50}$ values of 1.40, 5.31 and $13.92\;{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. This compound also showed antimalarial activity against Plasmodium falciparum with an $IC_{50}$ value of $7.1\;{\mu}g/mL$ as well as antimicrobacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis with a MIC of 25 mg/mL.

  • The effect of the essential oil obtained from Chrysanthemum boreale Makino on the apoptosis of KB cells was investigated. Cytotoxicity and cellular DNA content were analyzed by MTT assay, flow cytometry, agarose gel electrophoresis, and Hoechst 33258 staining. The caspase-3 and poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) proteins were estimated by Western blotting method. The various cytotoxic effects of the essential oil which are hallmarks of apoptosis, including DNA fragmentation, apoptotic body formation, and sub-G1 DNA content, all progressed in a dose-dependent manner. Treatment with an apoptosis-inducing concentration of the essential oil caused rapid and transient induction of caspase 3 activity. Further, the efficacious induction of PARP cleavage and caspase-3 activation was observed at an essential oil concentration of 0.1 and 0.2 mg/mL for 12 hr.
