Transcutaneous immunization refers to the topical application of antigens onto the epidermis. Transcutaneous immunization targeting the Langerhans cells of the skin has received much attention due to its safe, needle-free, and noninvasive antigen delivery. The skin has important immunological functions with unique roles for antigen-presenting cells such as epidermal Langerhans cells and dermal dendritic cells. In recent years, novel vaccine delivery strategies have continually been developed; however, transcutaneous immunization has not yet been fully exploited due to the penetration barrier represented by the stratum corneum, which inhibits the transport of antigens and adjuvants. Herein we review recent achievements in transcutaneous immunization, focusing on the various strategies for the enhancement of antigen delivery and vaccination efficacy.
This study investigated ginsenosides and tissue characteristics of roots injured by physiological disorder, rusty and rough skin. After separation to cortex and stele parts of healthy, rusty (red) and rough skin roots, respectively, the contents of saponin and ginsenosides were analyzed. And also, the histological and cytological characteristics of cortex and stele parts were investigated. Crude saponin contents were little different among healthy, rusty (red) and rough skin root and ginsenesides as - Rgl, - Re and - Rbl were largely detected both in stele and cortex part. The ratio of PT/PD showed about 1:1 in three kinds of root. In histological study, destoryed cells in epidermis of rusty(red) root, and those in epidermis and exodermis of rough skin root were observed. The cells in cortex of rusty (red) and rough skin root have generally nucleus with unfixed shape, unequal cell wall, large number of vacuole and mitochondris, and unidentified dark substances compared to healthy root. But in cell of stele tissue, most of organellE seems to be normal except a small number of cells in rough skin root.
A sequential sub-cellular study of the epicarp of Nerium indicum has been performed. Outer epidermis of the ovary wall is covered externally with a thin cuticle. Cytoplasm possesses most of the cell organelles in the ovary stage itself. Outermost zone of the pericarp is the epicarp, developing from the outer epidermis. In the developing fruit, cell organelles are found with its maximum intensity. In mature fruit, the epicarp becomes multilayered due to additional development of few collenchymatous cells close to the outermost layer. Epicarpic cell possesses large central vacuole, around which a thin layer of cytoplasm is present. Number of cell organelles are considerably reduced in the mature fruit. In the ovary stage starch grains are electron transparent, while in the mature fruit it is fruit it is electron transluscent.
The distribution of RNA in the anther wall of Brassica napus during male gametogenesis was followed by 3H-uridine autoradiography. Silver grain(SG) density was not above background in the anther wall just after microspore was released from tetrad callose wall. Significant accumulation of SGs occurred in tapetum, endothecium, and epidermis before microspore vacuolation. Accumulation of RNA in the tapetal cells was peak before the vaculation occurred in the microspore. With the onset of tapetal senescence at the partially vacuolated microspore stage, SGs decreased and they completely disappeared in the tapetum at the bicelled pollen stage. Accumulation of RNA in the endothecial cells was peak after the microspore mitosis and continued just after the generative cell mitosis. Appreciable SGs also occurred in cells of epidermis from nonvacuolate microspore stage to bicelled pollen stage. During this period, SG density was almost same and was not high as compared with tapetum or endothecium. At tricelled mature pollen stage, no incorporation occurred in anther wall. SGs were found mostly over the nucleouls and chromation of the cell nuclei.
Ginseng has been used as a traditional medicine with various therapeutic effects. However, it is still unknown which component of this plant is effective at promoting wound healing. Recently, ginsenoside $Rb_2$ has been reported to improve wound healing. In this study, to investigate the reported wound healing effect of the ginsenoside $Rb_2$, cell morphology and protein factors involved in epidermal formation were evaluated by immunshemical and immunoblotting analysis. $Rb_2$ stimulated epidermal cell proliferation, and the cell showed a 1.5-fold increase in thymidine uptake compared to the control (p<0.05, n=3). Futheremore $Rb_2$, was found to stimulate epidermis formation in a dose-dependent manner in raft culture, and to dose dependently enhance the expressions of protein factors related to cell proliferation, namely, epidermal growth factor and its receptor, fibronectin and its receptor, keratin 5/14, and collagenase 1 (p<0.05, n=3~9). It is believed that ginsenoside $Rb_2$, enhances epidermal cell proliferation by upregulating the expressions of these proliferation-related factors.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a mixture of ARL oils, Agastache rugosa, Rosemarinu officinalis, and Lavandula angustifolia on atopic dermatitis (AD) model on NC/Nga mice. Methods: Twenty-four, 6 week-NC/Nga mice were assigned to a control group (C, n=8), an AD-induced group (E, n=8), and an ARL oil-treated group (E, n=8) that had two treatments per day for 6 days. Epidermis thickness, total amount of collagen and expression of TGF-${\beta}$ in the AD induced mice were measured. Results: The ARL oil-treated group showed a significantly decreased epidermis thickness, and a greater amount of collagen and expression of TGF-${\beta}$ compared with the AD-induced group. Conclusison: ARL oil may be a putative resources for care or treatment of AD in the view of nursing intervention.
The water status of Pinus densiflora and P. koraiensis was observed after the treatment of simulated acid rain for every month August 1997 to March 1998. Both of the species showed increase of dry weight, water saturation deficit and epidermis transpiration after treatment of simulated acid rain (pH 3.5) for first three months. On the contrary, water content was decreased in both the species after three month of simulated acid rain treatment. The effect of simulated acid rain, however, became weaker after that and no big difference was observed after seven month of treatment. Water potential of the leaf of both species became lower than that of the control(pH 5.6) after seven month treatment of simulated acid rain. The cuticle layers of the epidermis and florins ring were damaged seriously and the size of the gap between stomata became bigger after the treatment of simulated acid rain.
This study was carried out to investigate the anatomical characteristics, the radial and axial variation of the cell dimension and bulk density for four bamboo species used as the major material of bamboo products in Korea; Phyllostachys(P.bambusoides, P.edulis, P.nigra var.henonis, and Pnigra). The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1) In the outer part of culm, the mophological difference of cell diameter and distribution were not acknowledged. However, gum-like substance was occurred In the epidermis, hypodermis, cortex and metaxylem vessel of P.nigra, while it was occured only in the metaxylem vessel of P.edulis. 2) The protoxylem vessel in the central zone of culm-wall could be in the two types; the first type consisted of 4-5 small cell pieces occurred in P.edulis and P.nigra var. henonis, the second type of 1-2 large cell pieces in P.bambusoides and P.nigra. And transition of cell diameter from the vascular bundle sheath to the ground tissue was gradually enlarged in P.nigra and P.edulis but abruptly in P.bambusoides and P.nigra var. henonis. 3) Thin-wall tyloses were well developed in the outer and central zone of culm-wall in four species. 4) Compared with the central part of culm-wall, the number of parenchyma cells and the amount of the vascular bundle sheaths per unit area were a few in the inner part. The inner part nearest to the pith cavity was consisted of thick-well parenchyma cell. 5) The dimensional variations of metaxylem vessel and parenchyma cell in the radial direction were decreased from the inner part to the epidermis in all species observed. 6) The fiber length was the maximum in the central zone and its diameter was increased from the inner part to the outer part. In the axial variation. fiber length was slightly increased from the base and then decresed slowly toward the top, and its diameter was reverse. 7) The axial variation of the bulk density was continuously increased from the base toward the top and its radial variation was rapidly increased from the inner part to the epidermis.
Sunlight is perceived by human beings first through the epidermis to space, and is a non - material medium that provides physical awareness of space, diversified expression of spaces, and plenty experience. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of active building skin based on the inflow of natural light required by humans, looked through among the works of Jacques Herzog & Pierre de Meuron, which show the characteristics of active building skin, TEA(Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, 2008), Messe Basel New Hall (2013) and Elbphilharmonie (2016). First, the interaction between Sunlight and space is divided into spatial characteristics and sensitivities according to their concepts, properties, and characteristics. The characteristics of active skin by light are classified into a physical approach and a constructive approach. Second, (El Croquis 152/153) and analyzed the images, detail drawings, and elevations, and simulated them in 3D to express the relationship between light and active building skin. Third, the changes of light intensity, light color, and distribution of light according to the time of light entering and the skin are determined from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. Fourth, the images taken from January 30th to February 7th, 2017 on the site were compared with the computer simulated images, and the relationship between active skin and light was compared. This study is to recognize the existence and necessity of light required for human being through the activated epidermis differentiated from the limited or closed epidermis focused on information transmission, I would like to emphasize that I would like to take a step closer to the necessity and possibility of new attempts and developments so that I can feel the various experiential spaces by.
This study investigated the effect of AVG treatment on lipid material changes in the 'Hongro' apple epidermis. The internal ethylene concentration in 'Hongro' apples treated with $200mL{\cdot}L^{-1}$ AVG and stored at room temperature after harvest was significantly lower than that in 'Hongro' apples treated with $20mL{\cdot}L^{-1}$ Ethephon and the controls. During the same period, the emission of wax after the AVG treatment was also significantly lower than that after the other treatments. In conclusion, treatment with $220mL{\cdot}L^{-1}$ AVG two weeks before harvesting was found to be effective in improving and maintaining the quality of the 'Hongro' apples. Reducing the level of internal ethylene can delay the aging of fruit and inhibit the accumulation of wax in the fruit epidermis.
