  • In this study, we investigated the application of an extract from Ephedra sinica which has been composed of traditional Korean medicine as a whitening ingredient. The extract of Ephedra sinica which was obtained from the mixture of methanol and water (1:1) the inhibitory effect of tyrosinase. Then, Ephedra sinica was extracted by two different solvents. One was water and the other was methylene chloride. Only, the water extract of Ephedra sinica showed the inhibitory effort of tyrosinase; the anti-tyrosinase activity with $0.2\%$ of the water extract was $60.6\%$. But the extract of Ephedra sinica in methylene chloride fraction showed little inhibitory effect on tyrosinase. The inhibitory effect of the concentrated water extract of Ephedra sinica was tested on L-DOPA auto-oxidation and melanin synthesis in B-16 melanoma. In L-DOPA auto-oxidation, $0.5\%$ of the concentrated water extract showed $87\%$ of inhibition of L-DOPA auto-oxidation and the $0.75\%$ concentrated Ephedra sinica extract in wafer fraction inhibited $98.8\%$ of that. In melanin synthesis of B-16 melanoma, the concentrated water effect of Ephedra sinica inhibited $70.2\%$ or $79.9\%$ of inhibitory effect on that at the concentration of $0.05\%$ or $0.075\%$, respectively. For verifying the skin whitening effect of the concentrated water extract of Ephedra sinica in vivo, we performed the clinical test of that. The research showed the significant skin whitening effect of a cream containing $0.5\%$ Ephedra sinica extract and the statistical analysis showed a significant difference (p < 0.05) between sample (containing $0.5\%$ Ephedra sinica extract) and placebo after 10 weeks.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to report the case of nocturnal enuresis in two children treated by using hypothesis that awareness during sleep may improves symptoms. Methods Enuresis children usually are not even aware of nocturnal urea due to excessive sleep. During the sleep cycle, enuresis children do not tend to have sleep-wake transition period compared to normal children. Ephedrine, the main ingredient of Ephedra sinica (麻黃), has a wakening effect. Two pediatric patients, who were suffering from nocturnal enuresis, were administered by Tosatang-gamibang (菟絲湯加味方) added Ephedra sinica (麻黃) or Boatang-gamibang (補兒湯加味方) added Ephedra sinica (麻黃) while correcting unhealthy voiding habit. Results As a result of the treatment, two pediatric patients were recovered without relapse. Conclusions In this report, we have proven that Tosatang-gamibang (菟絲湯加味方) added Ephedra sinica (麻黃) or Boatang-gamibang (補兒湯加味方) added Ephedra sinica (麻黃) and correcting voiding habit can considerably be effective in recovering nocturnal enuresis.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the impact of Ephedra sinica pharmacopuncture on the weight and lipid metabolism of obese mice. Methods: Obesity was induced in male C57BL/6 mice by a 60% fat diet. The animals were divided into three groups (n=5) fed a normal diet, high-fat diet, and high-fat diet with Ephedra sinica pharmacopuncture. After 13 wk, fasting blood sugar levels were measured in each group, and oral glucose tolerance tests were conducted. After 15 wk, body weight, epididymal fat pad weight, subcutaneous fat pad weight, and serum lipid and gene expression of hormone sensitive lipase (HSL), adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL), monoacylglycerol lipase (MGL), perilipin, and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-γ were measured in each group. Results: In the Ephedra group, body weight, fasting blood sugar, and oral glucose tolerance were significantly decreased. In addition, in the Ephedra group, the gene expression of HSL was significantly increased, whereas that of perilipin was significantly decreased. Conclusions: These results provide evidence that E. sinicapharmacopuncture affects obesity and obesity-induced metabolic syndrome, including insulin resistance and dyslipidemia, by activating lipolysis via the HSL pathway in adipose tissue.

  • To evaluate whether active components produced by solid fermentation of Phellinus baumii and Ephedra sinica have potential in ameliorating allergic symptoms in mice, we tested anti-allergic activities in a dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB)-induced allergic mouse model. DNFB-induced allergic symptoms werereduced to about 50% of control levels by active components produced by solid fermentation of Phellinus baumii and Ephedra sinica, as evaluated by measuring the width of epidermal swelling. H&E staining also revealed that these active components markedly reduced allergic symptoms in the epidermis of the ear. The results indicate that active components produced by solid fermentation of Phellinus baumii and Ephedra sinica have the potential to ameliorateallergic symptoms, and may be useful biomaterial(s) in the neutraceutical or cosmeceutical industry.

  • This study was undertaken to test for anti-Hepatitis B virus (HBV) activity of the aqueous extracts prepared from Eugenia caryophyllate, Ephedra sinica, Cinnamomum cassia. Aqueous extracts were assayed for the inhibition of HBV replication by measurement of HBV DNA and surface antigen (HBsAg) levels in the extracellular medium of HePG2 2.2.15 cells. All extracts decreased the levels of extracellular HBV virion DNA at concentrations ranging from 128 to 256 $\mu$g/ml and inhibited the production of HBsAg dose-dependently. Our findings suggest that these three hebal medicinal plants may have potential to develop as specific anti-HBV drugs in the future.

  • This study was designed to evalulate the biological activity, particularly induction of IgA in primary Peyer's patches cells, of herbal medicines for a long time in Asia. Among fifty four herbal medicines tested, Ephedra sinica, Magnolia officinalis, Lonicera japonica and Lithospermum erythorhizon induced IgA production. The polar and high molecular weight component in Ephedra sinica was capable of inducing IgA in primary Peyer's patches cells. Therefore, we suggest that some herbal medicines could use for the treatment of food allergy.
