Surface friction welding, SFW, is a newly developed solid state welding technology for joining of thin metal sheets. Workpieces are joined by frictional heat, shear deformation and plastic flow generated by friction between the rotating tool and surface of the workpiece. The SFW is an economical and environmentally conscious technology with high joining speed and excellent properties, and is expected to be used widely in various industries in the near future.
New materials are very useful due to their wide range of applications, however, they also have caused new pollutants that damage our environment. Chemists have been conscious of the severity of these environmental problems and a great deal of effort has been put into developing environmentally benign chemical processes to synthesize new materials (green synthesis). We also have reported a green synthesis method of synthesizing silver nanoparticles using water-glycerol solution in a previous study. While conducting further research, we have recently discovered that the size of silver nanoparticles is proportional to the quantity of water present in glycerol. This method is completely benign and ecofriendly pathway, as the size of silver nanoparticles is adjusted solely by controlling the quantity of water added to glycerol, without extra additives and energy.

Energy consumption reduction has become an important key word in manufacturing that can be achieved through the efficient and optimal use of raw materials and natural resources, and minimization of the harmful effects on nature or human society. The successful implementation of this concept can only be possible by considering a product's entire life cycle and even its disposal from the early design stage. To accomplish this idea with milling, minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) strategies and cutting conditions are analyzed through process modeling and experiments. In this study, a model to predict the cutting energy in the milling process is used to find the cutting conditions, which minimize the cutting energy through a Kriging meta-modeling process. The MQL scheme is developed first to reduce the amount of cutting oil and costs used in the cutting process, which is then employed for the entire modeling and experiments.
This paper outlines the findings of a consumer survey conducted in 1996 and 2001 by the University of Bonn, Germany, across 15 European countries. The survey involved a sample of 3,300 respondents in 1996 and around 11,000 respondents in 2001, throughout all 15 EU countries. Children and adolescents, between the ages of 10 and 17, were surveyed about their consumption habits and their attitudes towards the environment. The paper outlines the key findings on 'Children's fears and future prospects'. Children are exposed to a great mass of information, not only derived from the media but also from what they experience directly in their everyday-life. Some of this information translates into worries that adopt a clearer (more realistic) form when children become adolescents, as they might be easily involved in those events, and the understanding of the processes that may cause or continue them is deeper. Today's children and adolescents are under more pressure, since the social/political/economical spectrum is constantly changing. Change produces anxiety, fear of what will result from these transformations, as it implies that the social order will be reorganized. This paper reports on a long term comparative study among children and adolescents throughout the European Union, analyzed by country, age group and gender. It draws different preoccupations of young generations and consequent future expectations. It concludes by considering the influence of social and political organizations, as well as the family, on children and adolescents, as these might help to sustain a positive attitude towards various future events.
The purpose of this study is to reveal the kind of traditional perspectives we can use from the past to create a sustainable society for the future and to contribute to the growing interest in, and concern for, environmentally-sound designs. Such perspectives include ways to sustain naturalistic aesthetic views, elements of architectural design, and ideas for traditional lifestyles. Architecture that used these methods would contribute to a more ecologically sensitive view of man's place within the natural environment. This research was conducted by way of literature reviews; the objects of study were physically extant traditional housing, the composition of the traditional village, and traditional lifestyles. The results of this study indicate that the ecological characteristics of traditional Korean homes originated from a holistic conception of society and nature; this holistic conception has been found lacking in our more modern, western influenced homes. In the past, in order to leave an unpolluted or even healthier natural environment to descendents, it was essential to apply ecological principles. Villages harmonized with nature and houses were designed to utilize sunlight and wind. Their natural construction promoted consciousness of human beings and their symbiotic relationship with nature.
In the early phases of the product life cycle, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is recently used to support the decision-making for the product concepts, and the best alternative can be selected based on its estimated LCA and benefits. Both the lack of detailed information and time for a full LCA for a various range of design concepts need a new approach for the environmental analysis. This paper explores a new approximate LCA methodology for the product concepts by grouping products according to their environmental characteristics and by mapping product attributes into environmental impact driver (EID) index. The relationship is statistically verified by exploring the correlation between total impact indicator and energy impact category. Then, a neural network approach is developed to predict an approximate LCA of grouping products in conceptual design. Trained learning algorithms for the known characteristics of existing products will quickly give the result of LCA for newly designed products. The training is generalized by using product attributes for an EID in a group as well as another product attributes for the other EIDs in other groups. The neural network model with back propagation algorithm is used, and the results are compared with those of multiple regression analysis. The proposed approach does not replace the full LCA but it would give some useful guidelines for the design of environmentally conscious products in conceptual design phase.
As the industry develops, the amount of wastes is increasing in the economic system with various needs. As a result, the environmental problems are emerging as serious social issues and all the parties are required to make their best efforts. Among the issues proposed as the environmental issues, the logistics-related issues are exhaustion of the resources, global warming, environmental pollution, and acidification and so on. In order to respond to the environmental issues of the earth, the advanced countries are setting retrenched goals, reduction of the new greenhouse gases and accomplishment of retrenched goals by cooperation between the nations. Economic activities inevitably bring environmental problems and logistics is implementing those activities. The companies should perform the roles to resolve the environmental problems as the main cause of environmental pollution. Therefore, along with spreading recognition of social demand, the companies are required to establish policies regarding the environment and they should approach the issues from the perspective of resource circulation. These environment-friendly activities are emerging as the new source of competitiveness in the logistics field. Therefore, this study analyzes the effects of environment-friendly logistics activities on the reduction of logistics cost to reduce and resolve the environmental issues such as environment preservation, recycling and so on.
The main goal of this paper is to suggest a new path to new ecological paradigm in social environmental education. The old paradigm of environmental education consists of two elements. The first element is emphasis on the seriousness and urgency of environmental problems while the second one is the presentation of concrete action programs as solutions of environmental problems. The missing point of this paradigm is the internal process of meaning construction of actors. Any kind of social action must be based on the meaning which the actors gives to their own action. Becoming an environmentally conscious actor, therefore, actor himself needs to interpret the world from the new perspective. In this paper, we call the change of worldview in the deepest sense 'conversion'. Ecological conversion means shift from anthropocentrism to ecocentrism. In the following sections, main characteristics of ecological world view are specified and some examples of ecological confessions which reveal ecological world view are presented. In this last section, 7 ways of lifestyle change which can facilitate ecological conversion are suggested: 1) trying to be alone for a while everyday; 2) making peaceful state of mind; 3) sharpening the 'green sensitivity'; 4) creating slow way of life; 5) choosing voluntary simplicity; 6)raising spirituality; 7) practicing sharing and caring. Social environmental education in the new ecological paradigm could be considered as a starting point towards a civilizational shift from the dominant materialist civilization to the post-material ecological civilization.
Green campus means the environmentally-conscious universities that are trying to increase campus sustainability by reducing carbon emissions, expanding eco-friendly activities. This study was carried out to compare the recognition level on green campus between Korea and Japan universities. For investigating the recognition level of students and faculties on green campus, the questionnaire surveys were conducted by personal interviews in Korea and Japan, separately. The 40% and 68% respondents in Korean A and B universities, respectively, pointed out the energy issue as one of the serious environmental problems while the corresponding ratio among Japanese respondents was 44% and 34%. The participation intention for green campus movement in Japanese universities was higher than Korean universities. The 70% or 52% of Korean students in A and B universities, respectively, replied that they did not participate the green campus movement. It is needed to strengthen the educational program to achieve the sustainability of campus in Korea.
