  • Marine technology must advance to meet the needs of a wealthier and more demanding public while at the same time provide greater environmental protection. Pollution noise and vibration is the specific issue being discussed in this paper Noise is of course due to vibration from high speed engines driving generators, entilators, winch and other gear, while underwater noise pollution results from the propellers and the resistance produced by the hull of the ship moving through the water. Vibration is also a factor in potential damage to sensitive electronic gear and metal fatigue. The issue of noise pollution does not cease when a vessel enters her berth and the main engines shut down. There is still the matter of ventilation and other mechanical factors at work to maintain a comfortable, efficient environment. We measured the noise level and vibration displacement in the training ship A-Ra at underway and Berth. The authors analyzed the frequency of noise and maximum vibration displacement in the position.

  • Recently, due to the high interests for well being life, claims about noise ad vibration are increased very rapidly. Therefore more reliable and exact evaluation of noise impact has been required. Until now in Korea, only one prediction equation for the assessment of railway environmental noise was used. But that equation has many limits and weak points because of the update was not performed from 1993. So in this study, the performance of another equation proposed by authors was compared to the former. As a result, proposed prediction equation may be used to evaluate the impact of railway noise in the future.

  • A satellite component must withstand vibration caused when launch vehicle acoustics and engine rumble transfer to it through its structural mount. Components shall be subjected to environmental tests after manufacturing process thus the environmental test conditions are needed for component level test including vibration and shock. This paper deals with derivation of component-level environmental test specifications, especially for solar panels of STSAT-2(Science & Technology SATellite-2). Sine sweep random vibration, and shock test conditions were generated for solar panels by assuming the satellite as single-degree-of-freedom system with a base excitation.

  • An instantaneous environmental noise simulation method emitted by a moving high-speed train by quasi-stationary analysis is proposed in this study. In the method, the propagation attenuations from stationary point sources on segmented railways to a receiver are calculated using a general purpose environmental noise prediction program ENPro based on the ISO 9613-2 method. Then, the instantaneous environmental noise at a receiver due to a moving high-speed train considering convection effect is evaluated with the information on the propagation attenuations from the instantaneous train location to the receiver and the sound power levels and directivity of stationary point sources evaluated by German Schall 03 (2006). To demonstrate the validity of proposed method, simulated and measured time history of instantaneous noise for KTX-I and KTX-II on running are compared and the results show that the method can be utilized for the train noise source identification as well as the simulation of instantaneous environmental noise emitted by a high-speed train.

  • Assessment of noise exposed population is a method for checking the degree of environmental noise and social influence in order to reduce the risks such as annoyance and disturbance that are generated by environmental noise. Also, this method suggests the preferential noise reduction policy and action plan by accurately assessing the area that noise causes harm to human health. Recently, a noise map, which can predict noise in comprehensive areas, is used for the assessment of noise exposed population, breaking from the methods using existing measures. In particular, countermeasure for the noise can be considered more effectively by using assessment methods of noise exposed population for specific noise levels, areas, and building types which are the main input factors in noise maps. In this study, Assessment methods of noise exposed population by using 2D noise map are compared with those by 3D noise map.

  • Recently technology resulted in highly efficient and multiple-functional electric appliances considering environmental problems. One of the environmental problems is noise of a product in respect to its function. A vacuum cleaner is an essential electric appliance in our daily lives. However, severe noise resulted from high motor speed for improving the function of the appliance is a nuisance for the user. This noise is caused by vibration from various parts of the appliance and fluid noise during a series of intake and exhaust processes while rotating the impeller connected to the axle at a high speed of the fan motor inside the vacuum cleaner rotating around 30,000-35,000rpm. Despite the fact that many researchers conducted studies on reducing the noise level of the fan motor in a vacuum cleaner, only few studies have been conducted considering both the theoretical and experimental aspects using fluid analysis by measuring vibration and noise. Moreover, there has not been a study that accurately compared major noise data obtained considering both of the aspects. In this study, both aspects were considered by considering the following experimental and theoretical methods to verify the major causes of noise from the fan motor in a vacuum cleaner.

  • The noise map can be applied to predict the effect of noise and establish the noise reduction measure. But the predicted value in the noise map can vary depending on the input variables. Thus, we surveyed the several prediction models and analyzed the changes corresponding to the variables for obtaining the coherency and accuracy of prediction results. As a result, we know that the Schall03 and CRN model can be applied to predict the railway noise in Korea and the correction value, such as bridges correction, multiple reflection correction, curve correction must be used for reflecting the condition of the prediction site. Also, we know that the prediction guideline is an essential prerequisite in order to obtain the unified and accurate predicted value for railway noise.

  • The environmental-related disputes and claims are steeply increasing recently. Among them the number of disputes and claims on noise and vibration incurred in the process of construction is more than $85\%$. Since those disputes and claims cause cost overrun and or penalty and bad impression for the construction company, it is necessary to develop a systematic management method for solving them. This study presents a environmental management structure based on the examining many kinds of environmental-related laws including 'The Act on Regulation of Noise and Vibration' furthermore, through analysing various dispute and claim cases, and surveying literatures we suggest environmental study noise and vibration management method using for the preconstruction phase, the construction phase and the post construction phase, respectively.

  • This paper introduces what amount of railway vibration level observed from residential area. Five residential area located near the railway were selected to measure the vibration levels generated by the different types of Korean railway vehicles. Those 3-axis vibration measurements are applied to the frequency-dependent weighting functions recommended by ISO 2631-2, which are used to evaluate the 3-axis combined vibration levels such as peak levels, L 10 levels and root-mean-squared values. These evaluated results are shown to indicate the environmental vibration severity for the different residential area. In addition to those physical vibration measurements, the survey of subjective responses of residents was also carried out by distributing the questionnaire suggested by WHO. The questionnaire includes the subjective scales for assessing the annoyance and the sleep-disturbance caused by the environmental vibration. The statistical analysis results collected from 386 respondents are introduced. The highly annoyed population and the highly sleep-disturbed one are examined to identify the .elation between their subjective scale and their corresponding environmental vibration levels. These attempts are shown to lead to the salient model to relate the environmental vibration level and the subjective responses of Korean residents to annoyance and sleep-disturbance.
