A strong negative correlation has been detected between the North Pacific Oscillation Index (NPI) and the Effective Drought Index (EDI) in May over Korea. In May of positive NPI year, anomalous patterns caused a drought in Korea as follows: the anomalous south-low, north-high low-level pressure patterns in the northeast and southeast of Korea have strengthened the anomalous northerlies to Korea. In addition, these anomalous northerlies have prevented western North Pacific (WNP) high from moving northward. As a result, anomalous descending flows have strengthened in the mid-latitude region in East Asia. In the WNP, the anomalous south-high, north-low sea surface temperature (SST) has been widely distributed, which has strengthened anomalous south-low, north-high low-level pressure patterns. These anomalous characteristics of pressure and SST patterns observed in May of positive NPI years have already been detected in previous winter (December-February) and early spring (March, April). In addition, the anomalous negative sea ice concentration in the North Pacific during two seasons has strengthened the anomalous anticyclonic circulation in the same region and in turn made a contribution to formation of anomalous south-low, north-high pressure patterns in May.
The study explored droughts using the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) in the northwestern region of Bangladesh, which is the drought prone area. In order to assess the trend and variability of monthly rainfall, as well as 3-month scale SPI, non-parametric Mann-Kendall (MK) tests and continuous wavelet transform were used respectively. The effect of climatic parameters on the drought in this region was also evaluated using SPI, with the Southern Oscilation Index (SOI) by means of the wavelet coherence technique, a relatively new and powerful tool for describing processes. The MK test showed no statistically significant monthly rainfall trends in the selected stations, whereas the seasonal MK test showed a declining rainfall trend in Bogra, Ishurdi, Rangpur and Sayedpur stations respectively. Sen's slope of six stations also provided a decreasing rainfall trend. The trend of the SPI, as well as Sen's slope indicated an increasing dryness trend in this area. Dominant periodicity of 3-month scale SPI at 8 to 16 months, 16 to 32 months, and 32 to 64 months were observed in the study area. The outcomes from this study contribute to hydrologists to establish strategies, priorities and proper use of water resources.
The purpose of this study is to offer information about the current river conditions and basic data of streams in Busan city, by selecting 20 underground streams and evaluating their multilateral stream assessment. Concerning the evaluation of streams, 4 sections including the general index, the bank index, the river characteristic index, and the ecological environment characteristic index were evaluated. Ahead of the evaluation, the study divided Busan city into 4 zone for a systematic river investigation. Then, the study allocated code names to each river, and conducted literature research and a field survey of streams. Based on this, the study applied the evaluation of multilateral stream assessment. As a result, out of 4 entire grades, there was no grade 1 or grade 2. Instead, 35% were grade 3, 60% were grade 4, and 5% were grade 5. When looking into the evaluation results by Zone, the Dongbusan Zone showed the highest index, and the Suyeonggang Zone, the Jungbusan Zone, and the Nakdonggang Zone followed, in order.
In this study, a dynamic modeling scheme is presented to describe the probabilistic structure of soil water and plant water stress index under stochastic precipitation conditions. The proposed model has the form of the Fokker-Planck equation, and its applicability as a model for the probabilistic evolution of the soil water and plant water stress index is investigated under a climate change scenario. The simulation results of soil water confirm that the proposed soil water model can properly reproduce the observations and show that the soil water behaves with consistent cycle based on the precipitation pattern. The simulation results of plant water stress index show two different PDF patterns according to the precipitation. The simple impact assessment of climate change to soil water and plant water stress is discussed with Korean Meteorological Administration regional climate model.

Time Domain Reflectometry with multiplex system has been installed to configure the spatial and temporal characteristics of soil moisture in a mountainous hillslope. An intensive surveying was performed to build a refined digital elevation model and flow determination algorithms with inverse surveying have been applied to establish an efficient soil monitoring system. Steady state wetness index, quasi-dynamic wetness index and fully dynamic wetness index have been calculated. Continuous monitoring of soil moisture data were analyized with wetness indices. Limitations and hydrological interpretations of this approach have beer discussed.

This study provides the empirical results of the customers' necessity and intentions of purchasing weather index insurance using survey of asking the customers' recognition about weather insurance. In this article, we discovered that not only the customers' past experience of loss but also the extent of damage and the effects that change in weather would have on their firm are positively related to an intention to purchase weather index insurance. In addition, the level of premiums was significantly higher for the highly-intended group of willing to purchase weather index insurance than the comparison group.
Ture diplacement of a fault monement is calculated from the displacement of the index plane such as bedding on an outcrop surface. The input parameters are the orientations of the index, fault, and outcrop planes. It is also necessary to input the orientation of fault striation and the offset distance of the index plane on the outcrop surface. The distances of the total, strike, horizontal and dip slip components of the fault movement are calculated from the input parameters. Hwang(1998) conducted a simlar calculation using trigonoment method. To apply the previous method, the offset distance of the index plane must be measured on a vertical outcrop surface. The calculation method of this study accepts the offset distence of index plane on an outcrop plane of any orientation. Calculation results from both method are indentical, regardless of the simplicity of the new method.
The purpose of this study is to assess spatiotemporal variation of coastal water quality according to time and location changes. For this we developed numerical marine trophic index base on four water quality components (chlorophyll, suspended solids, dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus) and applied this index to the water quality data measured in the korean coastal zone for the 7-years period from 1997 to 2003. Water quality data are obtained only at selected sites even though they are potentially available at any location. Therefore, in order to estimate spatial variation of coastal water quality, it is necessary to estimate the unknown values at unsampled locations based on observation data. In this study, we used IDW (Inverse Distance Weighted) method to predict water quality components at unmeasured locations and applied marine trophic index to predicted values obtained by IDW interpolation. The results of this study indicate that marine trophic index and spatial interpolation are useful for understanding spatiotemporal characteristics of coastal water quality.
The changes of pectoral muscle size (as an index of protein reserves) and fat reserves (as an index of lipid) were measured in wintering Dunlin during 1988 -1989 on two estuaries located in the south coast of Korea. The mean of lean mass of February population was greater(11.8%) than that of October population. SMI of October population was greater(4.5%) than that of February population and lipid index of October population also greater(1.6%) than that of February population. This show that the body condition of October population is better than February population. The mean of fat and protein reserves of 22 % of Dunlin arriving on October for their wintering were higher than that of others, this group seems to continue their migration to south further and 11% of the wintering population seems to starve during winter.
Index for difference of vegetation surface roughness (BSI: Bi-directional reflectance factor structure Index) was proposed in our laboratory (Konda et al., 2000). It is thought that BSI is useful vegetation index for vegetation monitoring. If it can be applied for global covered satellite data, detailed monitoring of global vegetation can be expected. However, in order to apply BSI to global satellite data, there are some problems to be solved. In this study, in order to make global data set of BSI, it arranged about processing of the global satellite data for making BSI data sets.
