  • Objectives This study aimed to evaluate the risk factors associated with depression and suicidal ideation in a rural population. Methods A survey was conducted with 543 farmers from Chungcheongnam-do Province using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) for depression, Lubben Social Network Scale (LSNS) for social support, Swedish Q16 for neurotoxicity symptoms and a survey tool for farmer's syndrome. Results After adjusting for socioeconomic factors using logistic regression analysis, poor self-rated health, low social support and neurotoxicity were positively associated with the risk of depression (odds ratio [OR], 15.96; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.11 to 81.97; OR, 3.14; 95% CI, 1.26 to 7.82; and OR, 3.68; 95% CI, 1.08 to 12.57, respectively). The risk of suicidal ideation significantly increased with low social support, neurotoxicity and farmer's syndrome (OR, 2.28; 95% CI, 1.18 to 4.40; OR, 6.17; 95% CI, 2.85 to 13.34; and OR, 3.70; 95% CI, 1.51 to 9.07, respectively). Conclusions Given the overall results of this study, there is a need to establish programs which can improve the health and social relationships of farmers. Also, when farmers have neurological symptoms from pesticide exposure and characteristic symptoms of farmer's syndrome, a monitoring system for depression and suicide must be made available.

  • This study aims to analyze the influence of farmer characteristics, Ihsan attitude, economic conditions, and socio-cultural environmental support, and the number of family members on farmer behavior in meeting food needs in realizing household food security, with the role of the government as a moderator. This study is about the relationship between farmer behavior and their household food security. This research uses a quantitative research method involving 337 farmers from three villages located in three different sub-districts, namely Alang-alang village, Tragah sub-district, Mrecah village, Tanah Merah sub-district, and finally Gangsean village, Sepulu sub-district. The quantitative analysis approach consists of formulating problems, compiling models, obtaining data, finding solutions, testing solutions, analyzing results, and interpreting results. From the 7 hypotheses that were built, it was identified that there was 1 hypothesis that was not significant, namely the influence of the support of the socio-cultural environment on farmer behavior to meet the food needs of farmers' households. The attitude that is identified is still very rarely used in the context of agricultural human resources and at the same time is an inherent character of Madurese farmers which is an interesting part for researchers to study more deeply and become new or authentic in this research.

  • A survey was conducted for dairy farmer to manage efficiently of a milking machine and equipment. Labor hours, operation costs, and milking cares for each dairy farmer to estimate the expected numbers of machine and equipment on the basis of the desired dairy farm scale. Based on the results of this research the following conclusions were made: Those who possessed a herringborn system and a tandem parlour system were relatively small portion 2% and 25% respectively of the whole dairy farmer. To improve dairy farmer\`s life, or to reduce his hard labor hours. it was necessary for most of dairy farmers to possess a herringborn system and a tandem parlour system. However, it was difficult for most of farmers to purchase a herringborn system and a tadem parlour system, because these system were very expensive. Only 20% farmers of the whole farmers repaired their milking system, which needed to be repaired quickly enough so that it might was used everyday. Among the parts of milking system, pulsator was found to have the highest breakdown ratio 59%, and vacuum pump was the breakdown ratio 27%. It took more than 2 hours to be milked twice a cow per one day. It means that milking spend so much time. Therefore, the auto milking system should be supplied to decrease hard labor hour.

  • Health complaints among vinylhouse workers in Sungjoo county, Kyungpook province led to the investigation of heavy metal levels of air, soil and humans as well as physical conditions of the vinylhouse. The average temperature and humidity inside the vinylhouse were 8 higher and 10% point lower, respectively, as compared to the outside. While discomfort index(D. I.) outside was pleasant level(69.2), D. I. inside was 82 at which point 100% of people feels discomfort. Cadmium concentration of soils inside the vinylhouse(0.116 mg/kg) was 1.8 times higher than the soils outside. Arsenic concentration of soils inside the vinylhouse(4.882 mg/kg) was only slightly higher than the soils outside(4.182 ng/kg). However, both heavy metal concentrations detected in soils inside or outside the vinylhouse were within the normal range. Analysis of 10 air samples taken inside the vinylhouse showed that only one sample had a cadmium concentration above the detectable level and the rest of samples were below the detectable levels. While there were no difference of arsenic concentrations in urine between male and female, cadmium concentrations in urine samples of female (3.31 ug/l) was slightly higher than male(2.38 ug/l). Age-dependent increases of cadmium concentrations in urine samples were also observed. However, there was no concentration difference of these heavy metals in urine between vinylhouse workers and non-vinylhouse workers. Urine concentrations of cadmium and arsenic detected from vinylhouse workers or non-vinylhouse workers were within the normal range. The present study represents a first attempt to evaluate physical and environmental risk factors of the vinylhouse affecting the vinylhouse farmer's health. The study revealed that, while physical conditions of the vinylhouse such as temperature and humidity are the possible factors associated with the farmer's complaints, environmental contamination as judged from heavy metal levels in soil, air and humans is not a risk factor contributing to the vinylhouse farmer's health problem.

  • There is no simple method to solve livestock waste problems satisfactorily. For a successful solution, various methods should be well organized orderly depending upon the situation. Even in the livestock waste management, integrated waste management principle should be applied. Minimization of livestock waste generation is the first priority. It is also important to distribute fairly livestock farms throughout the nation. Efficient management of permit system is equally important. Permit should be given only when the farmer have enough grass-land on which the farmer can apply more than two thirds of livestock waste generated or when the farm have an anaerobic digestor in which store livestock waste generated for at least 3 months. In principle, livestock waste should be treated in the farm and it is desirable to operate composting facilities in the farm site too.

  • The study examines the relation between yield insurance and nitrogen fertilizer in Korea. Since the yield insurance has never been introduced in Korea, the simulation method developed by Babcock & Hennessy is used to see the effect. From the simulation, we obtained the following results: (1) When a farmer is assumed to have a risk-neutral utility function, the yield insurance reduces nitrogen fertilizer by 19.74% (2) When a farmer is assumed to have a risk-averse utility function, the yield insurance reduces nitrogen fertilizer by 24.53%.
