How would environmental education be implemented for effectiveness today? Deep reflection on the way of teaching environment in classes to achieve effectiveness is required. If there exist differences in students' environmental perception depending on environment class pattern, its most effective way should be looked for. In environmental education, inducing the students to have advisable attitude voluntary about environment is more important than teaching them environmental knowledge. From such view, students' active participation is necessary for successful environmental classes. Students need to be set to share their principle, values, attitude about environment problems at environmental class through presentation which is important factor to make them have advisable environmental attitude. Therefore, environmental class need to be carried out student-led way. For that, a class model need to be designed which will be helpful for the students to arrange and elaborate their emitting thought about environment problems through disclosing their thoughts to share them with fellow students which will end up in their advisable environmental attitude. This study aimed to find out the effectiveness of environmental collage making class contributive to offering various environmental perception to students and grasping others' thinking about environment. Fifty-eight 10th graders at U Science High School in Ulsan metropolitan city were selected for the study that carried out from 2010 April to June by choosing total 10 environmental themes divided into environmental collage making class applied to the 30 test group students, and general environmental class applied to 28 control group students. Following are the study results. First, in students' environmental sensitivity, the students in the environmental collage making class appeared to be higher compared with them in general environmental class. Second, in students' intentional environment action, the students in the environmental collage making class appeared to be higher compared with them in general environmental class. Third, in students' satisfaction with environmental class, the students in the environmental collage making class appeared to be higher compared with them in general environmental class.
To predict the influence of volcano eruption on agriculture in South Korea we evaluated the dispersal ranges of the volcanic ashes toward the South Korea based on the possibilities of volcano eruption in Mt. Baekdu. The possibilities of volcano eruption in Mt. Baekdu have been still being intensified by the signals including magmatic unrest of the volcano and the frequency of volcanic earthquakes swarm, the horizontal displacement and vertical uplift around the Mt. Baekdu, the temperature rises of hot springs, high ratios of $N_2/O_2$ and $_3He/_4He$ in volcanic gases. The dispersal direction and ranges and the predicted amount of volcanic ash can be significantly influenced by Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) and the trend of seasonal wind. The prediction of volcanic ash dispersion by the model showed that the ash cloud extended to Ulleung Island and Japan within 9 hours and 24 hours by the northwestern monsoon wind in winter while the ash cloud extended to northern side by the south-east monsoon wind during June and September. However, the ash cloud may extent to Seoul and southwest coast within 9 hours and 15 hours by northern wind in winter, leading to severe ash deposits over the whole area of South Korea, although the thickness of the ash deposits generally decreases exponentially with increasing distance from a volcano. In case of VEI 7, the ash deposits of Daejeon and Gangneung are $1.31{\times}10^4g\;m^{-2}$ and $1.80{\times}10^5g\;m^{-2}$, respectively. In addition, ash particles may compact close together after they fall to the ground, resulting in increase of the bulk density that can alter the soil physical and chemical properties detrimental to agricultural practices and crop growth.
Cadmium is an environmental pollutant and exhibits nephrotoxicity, hepatotoxicity and immunotoxicity. Recently, cadmium was found to induce DNA fragmentation, a biochemical hallmark of apoptosis, in cultured renal cells, hepatocytes and neuroblastoma cell. Therefore, the various toxicities of cadmium are thought to be caused by the induction of apoptosis. Lipids-derived pro-apoptotic ceramide has emerged as an important intracellular signaling molecule that mediates diverse cellular effects, of which programmed cell death, or apoptosis, has attracted significant interest. Accelerated soil wind erosion still remains to date to cause severe economic and environmental impacts. Revised and updated models to quantitatively evaluate wind induced soil erosion have been made for specific factors in the wind erosion equation (WEQ) framework. Because of increasing quantities of accumulated data, the WEQ, the revised wind erosion equation (RWEQ), the wind erosion prediction system (WEPS), and other soil wind erosion models have been established. These soil wind erosion models provide essential knowledge about where and when wind erosion occurs although naturally, they are less accurate than the field-scale. The WEQ was a good empirical model for comparing the effects of various management practices on potential erosion before the RWEQ and the WEPS showed more realistic estimates of erosion using easily measured local soil and climatic variables as inputs. The significant relationship between the observed and predicted transport capacity and soil loss makes the RWEQ a suitable tool for a large scale prediction of the wind erosion potential. WEPS developed to replace the empirical WEQ can calculate soil loss on a daily basis, provide capability to handle nonuniform areas, and obtain predictions for specific areas of interest. However, the challenge of precisely estimating wind erosion at a specific regional scale still remains to date.

In order to conduct the environmental assessment of long range transboundary air pollutants over East Asia, the moving pathways of air pollutants are of great importance, which are depending upon the meteorological weather patterns. Therefore regional scale modeling study requires the identified geopotential height distribution patterns to deal with behaviors of long range transport air pollutants for the effective long term atmospheric environmental assessment. In this study the synoptic meteorological classification using cluster analysis technique over Northeast Asia, and its previous applications of the regional scale air pollutant modeling studies were reviewed and summarized in detail. Other synoptic meteorological characteristics over Korean peninsula are also discussed.
Fluorine is unique chemical element which occurs naturally, but is not an essential nutrient for plants. Fluoride toxicity can arise due to excessive fluoride intake from a variety of natural or manmade sources. Fluoride is phytotoxic to most plants. Plants which are sensitive for fluorine exposure even low concentrations of fluorine can cause leave damage and a decline in growth. All vegetation contains some fluoride absorbed from soil and water. The highest levels of F in field-grown vegetables are found up to $40mg\;kg^{-1}$ fresh weight although fluoride is relatively immobile and is not easily leached in soil because most of the fluoride was not readily soluble or exchangeable. Also, high concentrations of fluoride primarily associated with the soil colloid or clay fraction can increase fluoride levels in soil solution, increasing uptake via the plant root. In soils more than 90 percent of the natural fluoride ranging from 20 to $1,000{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$ is insoluble, or tightly bound to soil particles. The excess accumulation of fluorides in vegetation leads to visible leaf injury, damage to fruits, changes in the yield. The amount of fluoride taken up by plants depending on the type of plant, the nature of the soil, and the amount and form of fluoride in the soil should be controlled. Conclusively, fluoride is possible and long-term pollution effects on plant growth through accumulation of the fluoride retained in the soil.
In this study, Fe3O4-ACCS-Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully synthesized using silica extracted from corn cob ash. The synthesized Fe3O4-ACCS-Ag NPs were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopyenergy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). In addition, the potential application of Fe3O4-ACCS-Ag NPs as an antibacterial material in water disinfection was investigated using Escherichia coli ATCC 8739 as model bacteria. The antibacterial activity of synthesized composite material showed 99.9% antibacterial effect within 20 min for the tested bacteria. From this experiment, the synthesized Fe3O4-ACCS-Ag nanocomposites also hold magnetic properties and could be easily recovered from the water solution for its reuse. The reused nanocomposites presented the decreasing antibacterial efficiencies with the reuse cycle but the composite used three times still killed 90% of bacteria in 20 min.
The nutrients in livestock manure produced during fermentation processes in public livestock recycling centers are used as fertilizers. However, the large amounts of swine manure produced in intensive livestock farms can be a nonpoint source of pollution. In this experiment, we investigated the chemical properties, inorganic components, and heavy metal contents in 101 samples of liquid swine manure collected from 28 public livestock recycling centers throughout the nation. Results showed that the average pH of the samples was alkaline (pH range 5.18 to 9.54), and their maximum EC was $53.2dS\;m^{-1}$. The amounts of total nitrogen and total phosphorus were in the range of 1000 - 2000 and $200-800mg\;L^{-1}$ while potassium, which constituted 47% of the total inorganic ions recovered from the liquid swine manure, amounted to $1500mg\;L^{-1}$. The most distinctive heavy metals recovered from the liquid swine manure were copper and zinc although the amounts of both heavy metals were much lesser than those of the standards as livestock liquid fertilizer set by the Rural Development Administration. On the other hand, the amount of nitrogen decreased rapidly with an increasing fermentation period from immature to mature, assumed to be lost as volatile compounds, such as ammonia, which are the major odor components during the fermentation process.
A more efficient use of nutrients can benefit both farmers and water quality. To propose an establishment scheme for official standards for liquid fertilizer from swine manure slurry, we evaluated previous and present data related to swine manure as well as analyzed 101 swine manure samples collected from 28 public livestock recycling centers throughout the nation. From these investigations, we found that the official standards for byproduct fertilizers set by the Rural Development Administration (RDA), especially for a liquid swine manure fertilizer, should be revised due to nutrient content requirements having to meet at least 0.3% content for the sum of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Otherwise, most of the swine manure cannot be utilized as a liquid fertilizer because the result of the 101 samples' analysis showed fewer than 28% of them met the minimum standard of ${\geq}0.3%$ content for the sum of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, while the contents of heavy metals as indicators of toxicity met the standard requirements. Therefore, it is suggested that official standards for byproduct fertilizers set by RDA should be revised as follows: no limit for nutrient contents and addition of chloride as homogeneity. Also, NaCl should be changed to Na because NaCl cannot be analyzed by instrument.

The soil does not only serve as a medium for plant growth but also for engineering construction purposes. It is very weak in tension, very strong in compression and fails only by shearing. The behaviour of the soil under any form of loading and the interactions of the earth materials during and after any engineering construction work has a major influence on the success, economy and the safety of the work. Soils and their management have therefore become a broad social concern. A limitless variety of soil materials are encountered in both agronomy and engineering problems, varying from hard, dense, large pieces of rock through gravel, sand, silt and clay to organic deposits of soft compressible peat. All these materials may occur over a range of physical properties, such as water contents, texture, bulk density and strength of soils. Therefore, to deal properly with soils and soil materials in any case requires knowledge and understanding of these physical properties. The desired value of bulk density varies with the degree of stability required in construction. Bulk density is also used as an indicator of problems of root penetration, soil aeration and also water infiltration. This property is also used in foundation engineering problems. While not conforming to standard test procedures, this work attempts to add to the basic information on such important soil parameters as water content, bulk density.
