  • In this study, the geometry consists of a two-dimensional rectangular enclosure with localized heating from below. The size and the location of the heater on the floor has been varied, and one of the vertical walls remains at a low temperature simulating a cold window. The governing equations for momentum, energy and continuity, which are coupled with turbulent equations have been solved using a finite volume method. A low Reynolds number $k-{\varepsilon}$ model has been incorporated to solve the turbulent kinetic energy and the dissipation rate. The heat transfer characteristics and the thermal environmental characteristics of the room have been obtained for various system parameters in a room with a partially heated floor.

  • Galaxy clusters as the densest and most prominent regions within the large-scale structure can be used as well characterizable laboratories to study astrophysical processes on the largest scales. X-ray observations provide currently the best way to determine the physical properties of galaxy clusters and the environmental parameters that describe them as laboratories. We illustrate this use of galaxy clusters and the precision of our understanding of them as laboratory environments with several examples. Their application to determine the matter composition of the Universe shows good agreement with results from other methods and is therefore a good test of our understanding. We test the reliability of mass measurements and illustrate the use of X-ray diagnostics to study the dynamical state of clusters. We discuss further studies on turbulence in the cluster ICM, the interaction of central AGN with the radiatively cooling plasma in cluster cooling cores and the lessons learned from the ICM enrichment by heavy elements.

  • This paper presents the results of numerical simulation of wind environment and wind coefficient around super high-rise building. The analysis of aerodynamic response due to wind-induced forces and wind effect to surrounding buildings is important to high-rise building. This paper simulates the wind force to the high-rise building and wind flow pattern around the high-rise building, and shows the usability of CFD analysis to design process of high-rise building. A Navier-Stokes-Solver (FLUENT) with Quick spatial discretization scheme and RNG $\kappa-\epsilon$ turbulence model has been applied to the computation of the three dimensional turbulent flow.

  • The purpose of this paper is to find a more accurate method to evaluate pedestrian wind by computational fluid dynamics approach. Previous computational fluid dynamics studies of wind environmental problems were mostly performed by simplified models, which only use simple geometric shapes, such as cubes and cylinders, to represent buildings and structures. However, to have more accurate and complete evaluation results, various shapes of blocking objects, such as trees, should also be taken into consideration. The aerodynamic effects of these various shapes of objects can decrease wind velocity and increase turbulence intensity. Previous studies simply omitted the errors generated from these various shapes of blocking objects. Adding real geometrical trees to the numerical models makes the calculating domain of CFD very complicated due to geometry generation and grid meshing problems. In this case the function of Porous Media Condition can solve the problem by adding trees into numerical models without increasing the mesh grids. The comparison results between numerical and wind tunnel model are close if the parameters of porous media condition are well adjusted.

  • Transport of a scalar quantity, such as chemical concentration or temperature, is important in many engineering applications and environmental flows. Here we report on results obtained from the large eddy simulations of flow and concentration fields inside the tank performed using a spectral multi-domain technique. The computations were driven by specifying the impeller-induced flow at the blade tip radius (Yoon et al. $^{(1)}$). This study focused on the concentration development at different molecular diffusivities in a stirred tank operated under turbulent conditions. The main objective of the work presented here is to study the large-scale mixing structure at different molecular diffusivities in a stirred tank by using the large eddy simulation. The time sequence of concentration and flow fields shows the flow dependency of the concentration development. The presence of spatial inhomogenieties is detailed by observing the time variation of local concentration at different positions.

  • The thermal comfort of occupants is directly related to several environmental factors such as velocity of air flow, turbulence intensity and temperature distribution of indoor air. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the indoor air flow and temperature distribution in office area using under-floor air-conditioning system (UFAC System) based on the results from physical measurements and to perform a Computer Fluid Dynamics (CFD) under the same condition of inlet and outlet as field measurement. The results from the CFD simulation are similar to those from the field measurement. The results show that UFAC system is provide proper indoor condition for occupants.

  • Using two-dimensional numerical hydrodynamic simulations, we investigate the star formation rate (SFR) in turbulent, multiphase, galactic gaseous disks. Our simulation domain is axisymmetric, and local in the radial direction and global in the vertical direction. Our models include galactic rotation, vertical density stratification, self-gravity, radiative heating and cooling, and thermal conduction, but do not include spiral-arm features. Turbulence in our models is driven by momentum feedback from supernova explosion events occurring in localized dense regions formed by thermal and gravitational instabilities. Self-consistent radiative heating, representing enhanced/reduced FUV photons from the star formation, is also taken into account. By controlling three parameters (the gas surface density, the stellar disk density, and the angular rotation rate) that characterize local galactic disks, we explore how the SFR depends on the background environmental state. We also discuss the relation between the SFR and the gas surface density found in our numerical models in comparison with observations.
