  • Growth of fish is controlled by various environmental factors, including water temperature (WT). WT is also a major factor that affects the eating behavior of fish. In this study, we studied the relationship between WT and expression profiles of factors involved in appetite regulation and digestion in red spotted grouper. Fish were divided into three groups with 30 fish per group and reared for 2 weeks in a recirculating system at three different WT (natural WT, 20 ℃, and 25 ℃). After 2 weeks, they were sacrificed immediately after food intake (+ 0 h), 3 h after (+ 3 h), 6 h after (+ 6 h), and 3 h before being fed the next day (- 3 h). Fish samples were obtained for analysis of mRNA expression levels of cholecystokinin (CCK), leptin A (LepA), leptin B (LepB), and neuropeptide Y (NPY) in the brain, liver, and intestine. Expression of CCK and NPY mRNA was significantly higher at 25 ℃ compared to that at natural WT and 20 ℃, but no difference was observed for leptin. This suggests that the red spotted grouper shows characteristics typical of subtropical fish and has higher levels of feeding and digestion when reared at 25 ℃ water temperature condition.

  • Exceeding the speed limit during vehicle driving is a key factor in the severity of lots of road accidents, and SLIF(Speed Limit Information Function) application is in the initial phase in Korea. SLIF helps the drivers to observe a speed limit when they are driving by providing alert and informing the current limit speed information based on external data using camera and/or digital map, for that reason, environmental conditions could be causes of SLIF malfunctions. In this study, design adequacy analysis of SLIF in respect of false recognition as the Korea traffic environment has been performed. As tentative results, road conditions and structure of speed limit sign as well as system performance often caused misrecognition.

  • Purpose: The use of renewable energy system is essential for building energy independence and saving energy consumption in the building sector. Among renewable energy technologies, ground source heat pump(GSHP) system is more energy-efficient and environmental-friendly than other heat source systems due to utilize stable ground heat source. However, the GSHP system requires a high initial installation cost and installation space in limited urban area, so it is difficult to have superiority in the market of heat source system. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the installation method of low-cost and improve system performance. This paper aims to evaluate the performance of double u-tube ground heat exchanger(GHX) and verify system feasibility through real-scale experiment. Method: In this study, the real-scale experiment of vertical closed-type GSHP system was conducted using double u-tube GHX and high-efficiency grout. Through the verification experiment, heat source temperature, heat exchange rate(HER) and seasonal performance factor(SPF) were measured according to the long-term operation. In addition, the feasibility analysis was conducted comparing to the single u-tube system. Result: In the results of experiment, average HER was 136.27 W/m and average SPF was 5.41. Furthermore, compared to the single u-tube, the installation cost of the developed system could be reduced about 70% in the same heating load condition.

  • Purpose Organizations invest significant portions of their budgets in fortifying information security. Nevertheless, the security threats by employees are still at large. We discuss methods to reduce security threats that are posed by employees in organization. This study finds antecedent factors that increases or decreases employee's compliance intention. Also, the study suggests organizations' security environmental factors which influences the antecedent factors of compliance intention. Design/methodology/approach The structural equation model is then applied in order to verify this research model and hypothesis. Data were collected on 415 employees working in organizations with an implemented information security policy in South Korea. We analyzed the fitness and validity of the research model via confirmatory factor analysis in order to verify the research hypothesis, then we analyzed structural model, and derived the result. Findings The result shows that organizational commitment and peer behavior increase security compliance intention of employees, while security system anxiety decreases compliance intention. And, organization's physical security system and security communication both have influence on antecedent factors for information security compliance of employees. Our findings help organizations to establish information security strategies that enhance employee security compliance intention.

  • The phenomenon of concrete column shortening has been widely acknowledged since it first became apparent in the 1960s. Axial column shortening is due to the combined effect of elastic and inelastic deformations, shrinkage and creep. This study aims to investigate the effects of ambient temperature, relative humidity, cement hardening speed and aggregate type on concrete column shortening. The investigation was conducted using a column shortening prediction model which is underpinned by the Eurocode 2. Critical analysis and evaluation of the results showed that the concrete aggregate types used in the concrete have significant impact on column shortening. Generally, aggregates with higher moduli of elasticity hold the best results in terms of shortening. Cement type used is another significant factor, as using slow hardening cement gives better results compared to rapid hardening cement. This study also showed that environmental factors, namely, ambient temperature and relative humidity have less impact on column shortening.

  • This study investigates the seismic performance of steel reinforced concrete (SRC) T-shaped columns under low cyclic loading tests. Based on test results of ten half-scale column specimens, failure patterns, hysteretic behavior, skeleton curves, ultimate strength, ductility, stiffness degradation and energy dissipation capacity were analyzed. The main variables included loading angles, axial compression ratios and steel ratios. The test results show that the average values of the ductility factor and the equivalent viscous damping coefficient with respect to the failure of the columns were 5.23 and 0.373, respectively, reflecting good seismic performance. The ductility decreased and the initial stiffness increased as the axial compression ratio of the columns increased. The strength increased with increasing steel ratio, as expected. The columns displaced along the web had higher strength and initial stiffness, while the columns displaced along the flange had better ductility and energy dissipation capacity. Based on the test and analysis results, a formula is proposed to calculate the effective stiffness of SRC T-shaped columns.

  • Background: Multiple myeloma (MM) is influenced by genetic and micro-environmental changes. Malignant plasma cells produce an abnormal monoclonal immunoglobulin, as well as cytokines, such as IL-10 and IL-6 which stimulate cells of the bone marrow microenvironment (BMM) and cause dysfunction and failure of many organs. B cell activating factor (BAFF), IL6 and IL10 are known to influence the growth and survival of malignant clones. Aim: The objectives of the present study were to investigate the circulating levels of BAFF, IL-10 and IL-6, correlate them with well-known parameters of disease activity in patients with MM, and to detect their impact on patients' survival. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on 89 newly diagnosed MM patients and seventy apparently healthy volunteers as a normal control group. BAFF, IL6, IL10 were measured by ELISA for both groups and survival analysis was performed for all patients. Results: Studied markers were higher in the MM patients compared to the normal control subjects. Patients survival was improved by high serum BAFF levels. Conclusions: High levels of BAFF were found to improve patients' survival. BAFF and IL-6 can be considered probable diagnostic markers for MM.

  • This research paper advances our understanding of complex interdependence among countries. Existing research has found that total factor productivity (TFP), the residual from the economic growth function, is hindered in the absence of a country's strong political and legal institutions or if a country does not already have a sufficiently high level of TFP. We also know that regional efforts to eliminate pollution are complex. Bridging these two areas while focusing on a high polluting yet high innovating region, the following research questions are posed: Are Northeast Asian countries key collaborators in pursuit of green R&D? Are Northeast Asian countries collaborating extensively with each other? What are the implications for other regions' attempts to establish these kinds of relations? To answer the above questions, biofuels-related technology as defined in the International Patent Classification's "green inventory" of environmentally sound technologies is examined. Patent data is drawn from the USPTO and inventors' country origin as the unit of analysis. For the 1990-2013 period, the Northeast Asian countries are in the core of a small set of collaborating countries. There is evidence that their centrality has increased in recent years. Most importantly, East Asia is becoming a singular research hub in terms of biofuels-related R&D, offering a counter in the foreseeable future to the dominance of the American and European research network hubs.
